The festival will feature staples such as Music on Main and Music Café, complemented by distinctive live performances, panel discussions, and multimedia presentations. The 2008 Festival line-up will feature numerous films that showcase music and musicians such as CSNY DÉJÀ VU, featuring Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, U23D, and PATTI SMITH: DREAM OF LIFE. The 2008 Sundance Film Festival runs January 17-27, in Park City, Salt Lake City , Ogden and Sundance, Utah. A complete list of films and events is available at the Sundance Institute website at www.sundance.org/festival. 2008 marks the 10th Anniversary of the Sundance Institute Film Music Program, which sponsors music showcases and roundtables at the Festival as well as labs for film music composers held each summer at Sundance, Utah. The Sundance Institute Film Composers' Lab and the intensive, four-day Documentary Composers' Lab allow filmmakers to work closely with accomplished composers, exploring their works-in-progress in relation to musical score. Fellows are selected from filmmakers receiving support both from the Sundance Filmmakers Lab and the Documentary Fund. This year's Sundance Film Festival continues this commitment by highlighting the interconnectedness of music and film, attracting both music industry veterans and top music media. This year's Festival will offer a wide range of musical encounters. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Music Café, produced by ASCAP. Over the last decade, ASCAP has provided stellar programming, presenting artists associated with Festival films along with other notable musical performances throughout the Festival. The 2008 line-up is no exception with John Rzeznik, Meiko, Patti Smith, Peter & Gordon and Sea Wolf among others slated to perform. Music on Main, featuring Gold Streets, Ha Ha Tonka and Meridian West, is an event open to the general public. DJ Spooky will headline at New Frontier on Main along with Sundance Institute Composers Lab alum Shahzad Ali Ismaily, and BMI, a founding sponsor of the Sundance Composers Lab and longtime Festival participant, will present BMI Snowball, featuring The Aggrolites and Nick Urata from DeVotchKa. Festival sponsors Ray Ban, ZonePerfect and Turning Leaf Vineyards will also showcase live music in their own venues. Robert Miller Gallery is pleased to announce Eighteen Stations, a special project by Patti Smith. Eighteen Stations revolves around the world of M Train, Smith’s bestselling book released in 2015. M Train chronicles, as Smith describes, “a roadmap to my life,” as told from the seats of the cafés and dwellings she has worked from globally. Reflecting the themes and sensibility of the book, Eighteen Stations is a meditation on the act of artistic creation. It features the artist’s illustrative photographs that accompany the book’s pages, along with works by Smith that speak to art and literature’s potential to offer hope and consolation. The artist will be reading from M Train at the Gallery throughout the run of the exhibition. Patti Smith (b. 1946) has been represented by Robert Miller Gallery since her joint debut with Robert Mapplethorpe, Film and Stills, opened at its 724 Fifth Avenue location in 1978. Recent solo exhibitions at the Gallery include Veil (2009) and A Pythagorean Traveler (2006). In 2014 Rockaway Artist Alliance and MoMA PS1 mounted Patti Smith: Resilience of the Dreamer at Fort Tilden, as part of a special project recognizing the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway Peninsula, where the artist has a home. Smith's work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions worldwide including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto (2013); Detroit Institute of Arts (2012); Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford (2011); Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporaine, Paris (2008); Haus der Kunst, Munich (2003); and The Andy Warhol Museum (2002).

    26 in the Mid-1980'S, Noise Music Seemed to Be Everywhere Crossing

    In the mid-1980’s, Noise music seemed to be everywhere crossing oceans and circulating in continents from Europe to North America to Asia (especially Japan) and Australia. Musicians of diverse background were generating their own variants of Noise performance. Groups such as Einstürzende Neubauten, SPK, and Throbbing Gristle drew larger and larger audiences to their live shows in old factories, and Psychic TV’s industrial messages were shared by fifteen thousand or so youths who joined their global ‘television network.’ Some twenty years later, the bombed-out factories of Providence, Rhode Island, the shift of New York’s ‘downtown scene’ to Brooklyn, appalling inequalities of the Detroit area, and growing social cleavages in Osaka and Tokyo, brought Noise back to the center of attention. Just the past week – it is early May, 2007 – the author of this essay saw four Noise shows in quick succession – the Locust on a Monday, Pittsburgh’s Macronympha and Fuck Telecorps (a re-formed version of Edgar Buchholtz’s Telecorps of 1992-93) on a Wednesday night; one day later, Providence pallbearers of Noise punk White Mice and Lightning Bolt who shared the same ticket, and then White Mice again. The idea that there is a coherent genre of music called ‘Noise’ was fashioned in the early 1990’s. My sense is that it became standard parlance because it is a vague enough category to encompass the often very different sonic strategies followed by a large body of musicians across the globe. I would argue that certain ways of compos- ing, performing, recording, disseminating, and consuming sound can be considered to be forms of Noise music.

    SUNDANCE INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES FILM FORWARD: ADVANCING CULTURAL DIALOGUE TO BE PRESENTED IN MOROCCO SEPTEMBER 27-30 Filmmakers Cherien Dabis (Amreeka ) and Emmy Award Winner Stanley Nelson ( Freedom Riders ) Featured Participants for Screenings and Workshops Co-Hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Rabat RABAT, MOROCCO (September 23, 2011) — Film Forward: Advancing Cultural Dialogue , a Sundance Institute initiative in partnership with U.S. federal cultural agencies, will be presented in the Kingdom of Morocco September 27-30, in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Rabat. A selection of films and film- related events will be presented at locations in Tangier, Tetouan, Salé and Casablanca. Filmmakers Cherien Dabis (Amreeka ) and Stanley Nelson ( Freedom Riders ), as well as Caroline Libresco, Senior Programmer at Sundance Institute, will travel to Morocco to represent the initiative and engage with audiences. “In just the first year of this program, we’ve taken films and filmmakers around the world and built a dialogue with audiences in Tunisia, Turkey, China, Kenya, Puerto Rico and several other locations in the U.S.,” said Keri Putnam, Sundance Institute Executive Director. “Though each location is different, audiences are finding common themes and sharing their own experiences. It speaks to the goal of the program – showing the power of film to transcend culture barriers.” Screenings, including some for students and underserved youth, will take place at locations including the Cinematheque de Tanger, the Tangier American Legation Museum in conjunction with the American Language Center, University Abdelmalek Essadi, Abi bakr Errazi Junior High School, Cinema Hollywood, and School of Metiers du Cinema. Private workshops will be held at University Abdelmalek Essadi in Tetouan by Stanley Nelson who will explore the filmmaking challenges he faced with creating a historical film and how to effectively use rich archival footage to create a singular cinematic experience.

The Sundance Film Festival is Sundance Institute’s flagship public program, widely regarded as the largest American independent film festival and attended by more than 120,000 people and 1,300 accredited press, and powered by more than 2,000 volunteers last year. Sundance Institute also presents public programs throughout the year and around the world, including Festivals in Hong Kong and London, an international short film tour, an indigenous shorts program, a free summer screening series in Utah, and more.
