Keys to Understanding Swiss Reformed Christianity” – A Short Presentation by the Reverend Catherine McMillan, Ambassador for the Reformation, Zürich Annual Gathering of the Baptist World Alliance on July 2, 2018 in Zürich Sisters and Brothers in Christ, welcome to Zürich! I bring you greetings on behalf of the Reformed Church of Switzerland. I hope that all of you have had safe journeys and that God will bless your time together. My job now is to help you to understand the church setting here. The majority Protestant church in Switzerland is the Reformed Church. 25% Reformed 37% Roman Catholic 24% with no religious affiliation 6% other Christian denominations 5% Muslim 1,5% other religions 2.4 million people belong to Reformed churches in Switzerland. The majority churches are steadily losing members and the sector with no religious affiliation is growing. But the Reformed and Catholic churches are widely respected and seen as playing a crucial role in society. With the territorial parish system they cover the whole country geographically. Each canton or state has its own Reformed Church with its own synod and board of executives. Since 1920 they have been loosely connected in the Federation of the Evangelical Reformed Churches of Switzerland. “Evangelical” means “Protestant” – Evangelisch. “Evangelikal” means “evangelical” the way the word is used in English. The Federation has 26 members. One of them is the Methodist Church of Switzerland. The others are cantonal Reformed churches. (Switzerland has 26 cantons) Many but not all of the cantonal churches receive tax money to keep their programs going, for example health and charity institutions, religious education, funerals, weddings and cultural events. -

Raniero Cantalamessa ofmcap BLESSED IS SHE WHO BELIEVED!” Mary in the Annunciation First Advent Sermon 2019 Every year the liturgy leads us to Christmas with three guides: Isaiah, John the Baptist and Mary, the prophet, the precursor, the mother. The first announced the Messiah from afar, the second showed him present in the world, the third bore him in her womb. This Advent I have thought to entrust ourselves entirely to the Mother of Jesus. No one, better than she can prepare us to celebrate the birth of our Redeemer. She didn’t celebrate Advent, she lived it in her flesh. Like every mother bearing a child she knows what it means be waiting for somebody and can help us in approaching Christmas with an expectant faith. We shall contemplate the Mother of God in the three moments in which Scripture presents her at the center of the events: the Annunciation, the Visitation and Christmas. 1. “Behold, / am the handmaid of the Lord” We start with the Annunciation. When Mary went to visit Elizabeth she welcomed Mary with great joy and praised her for her faith saying, “Blessed is she who believed there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken her from the Lord” (Lk 1:45). The wonderful thing that took place in Nazareth after the angel’s greeting was that Mary “believed,” and thus she became the “mother of the Lord.” There is no doubt that the word “believed” refers to Mary’s answer to the angel: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word (Lk 1:38). -

The Holy See APOSTOLIC LETTER ISSUED MOTU PROPRIO NORMAS NONNULLAS OF THE SUPREME PONTIFF BENEDICT XVI ON CERTAIN MODIFICATIONS TO THE NORMS GOVERNING THE ELECTION OF THE ROMAN PONTIFF With the Apostolic Letter De Aliquibus Mutationibus in Normis de Electione Romani Pontificis, issued Motu Proprio in Rome on 11 June 2007, the third year of my Pontificate, I established certain norms which, by abrogating those laid down in No. 75 of the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, promulgated on 22 February 1996 by my Predecessor Blessed John Paul II, reinstated the traditional norm whereby a majority vote of two thirds of the Cardinal electors present is always necessary for the valid election of a Roman Pontiff.Given the importance of ensuring that the entire process of electing the Roman Pontiff is carried out in the best possible way at every level, especially with regard to the sound interpretation and enactment of certain provisions, I hereby establish and decree that several norms of the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, as well as the changes which I myself introduced in the aforementioned Apostolic Letter, are to be replaced by the following norms:No. 35. "No Cardinal elector can be excluded from active or passive voice in the election of the Supreme Pontiff, for any reason or pretext, with due regard for the provisions of Nos. 40 and 75 of this Constitution."No. 37. "I furthermore decree that, from the moment when the Apostolic See is lawfully vacant, fifteen full days must elapse before the Conclave begins, in order to await those who are absent; nonetheless, the College of Cardinals is granted the faculty to move forward the start of the Conclave if it is clear that all the Cardinal electors are present; they can also defer, for serious reasons, the beginning of the election for a few days more. -

The Holy See POPE FRANCIS STATUTES OF THE SECRETARIAT FOR COMMUNICATION Preamble The Secretariat for Communication has been created in order to respond to the current context of communication, characterized by the presence and evolution of digital media and by factors of convergence and interactivity. This new situation requires a reorganization that takes into account the historic development of the Apostolic See’s structure of communication and moves towards a unified integration and management. Chapter 1 Nature and Responsibilities Art. 1 §1. The Secretariat for Communication is a Dicastery of the Roman Curia to which the Holy Father has entrusted the Apostolic See’s system of communication, in conformity with his Motu Proprio of 27 June 2015 on the current context of communication. §2. The Secretariat for Communication, unified in its structure and with respect for relevant operational characteristics, unifies all the Holy See’s entities involved in communication, so that the entire system may respond effectively to the needs of the Church’s mission of evangelization. §3. The Secretariat for Communication will consider new models, technical innovations and forms of communication in order to integrate them into this system, which is at the service of the Holy 2 See’s mission. Art. 2 §1. In carrying out its own functions, the Secretariat for Communication will collaborate with other competent Dicasteries, in particular with the Secretariat of State. §2. The Secretariat for Communication assists the Dicasteries of the Roman Curia, the institutions associated with the Holy See, the Governorate of Vatican City State, and other offices with headquarters in Vatican City State, or which depend on the Apostolic See for their work in communication. -

24 September 2018 His Holiness Pope Francis Apostolic Palace Vatican City State Most Holy Father, Seventy-five years ago next month, with the encouragement and blessing of the Venerable Pope Pius XII of happy memory, our predecessors founded this Episcopal Conference, anticipating in a modest way what the Second Vatican Council would later recognize, namely, that Conferences of Bishops are an expression of the “communion of fraternal charity and zeal for the universal mission entrusted to the Apostles”, and enable the pooling of “abilities and … wills for the common good and for the welfare of the individual churches” (Christus Dominus, 36). Assembled in that common spirit of charity and zeal, it is our custom at the beginning of our annual meeting to greet the head of the College of Bishops and to share some of the highlights of our discernment and deliberations this week, in the hope of your encouragement as Successor of Saint Peter, whom Our Lord prayed would strengthen his brethren (cf. Luke 22:32). In preparation for launching our Conference’s revised guidelines for protecting minors and vulnerable adults, our Plenary Assembly will listen to testimonies about the exploitation and suffering caused by sexual abuse. As you recalled in your 20 August 2018 Letter to the People of God, when one member of the Church suffers, all suffer. Throughout this week and in union with you, we will acknowledge in prayer, repentance and reflection that “as an ecclesial community … we were not where we should have been”, that we did not always “act in a timely manner, realizing the magnitude and the gravity of the damage done to so many lives,” and that, through what we have done and what we failed to do, too often we “showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them.” These failures are in stark contrast to the reassurance we want to give our young people. -

His Holiness, Pope Francis Apostolic Palace 00120 Vatican City July 1, 2015 Your Holiness, It is with profound sadness that I write to you today. My partner of 14 years, Margie Winters, was terminated from her Job as the Director of Religious Education at Waldron Mercy Academy in Merion, Pennsylvania, a school sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, where she had ministered for 8 joy-filled years. Her offense? She was asked to leave because we are married and, according to Church teaching, living in sin. Margie, in so many ways, was the soul of that school community and took seriously her responsibility to weave the values of mercy throughout the children’s education. Through prayers, liturgies, retreats and service projects the children learned what it means not only to be Catholic but to live out the values of our Catholic faith and, in particular, the works of mercy. Her passion and commitment to the gospel call of love animated the hearts of hundreds of students over the years who have gone on to root their lives in the God of mercy and justice, and many others who will dedicate themselves to the service of the poor because of the lessons Margie taught them. Lessons the Church taught her and ones she wove into the fabric of her being. How devastating not only to her now, but to the Waldron community, the Sisters of Mercy, and the Church that she will no longer have the opportunity to form more children in the faith to which she has dedicated her life. -

Yes, in fact, this period is referred to by two names. Sede vacante, in the Church’s official Latin, is translated "vacant see," meaning that the see (or diocese) of Rome is without a bishop. In the 20th century this transition averaged just 17 days. It is also referred to as the Interregnum, a reference to the days when popes were also temporal monarchs who reigned over vast territories. This situation has almost always been created by the death of a pope, but it may also be created by resignation. When were the most recent papal transitions? On April 2, 2005, Pope John Paul II died at the age of 84 after 26 years as pope. On April 19, 2005, German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, formerly prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, was elected to succeed John Paul II. He took the name Pope Benedict XVI. There were two in 1978. On August 6, 1978, Pope Paul VI died at the age of 80 after 15 years as pope. His successor, Pope John Paul I, was elected 20 days later to serve only 34 days. He died very unexpectedly on September 28, 1978, shocking the world and calling the cardinals back to Rome for the second time in as many months. -
