DONEGAN 1 1 Fundación ProAves, 33 Blenheim Road, Caversham, Reading, RG4 7RT, UK [email protected] or [email protected] Abstract The nomenclatural implications of Gentile & Snell (2009)'s innovations in the designation of a type specimen - that is sampled and tagged but not killed - are discussed. The paper also responds to Nemésio (2009)'s criticism of Donegan (2008), where I argued that descriptions based on samples of live individuals are valid. I also discuss whether recent descriptions of such a nature involve a different degree of scientific rigour to other descriptions. Introduction In this issue of Zootaxa, Gentile & Snell (2009) describe a critically endangered new species of land iguana from the Gálapagos islands, named Conolophus marthae. Aside from being an important discovery, this description includes noteworthy innovations in the designation of a type specimen based on a live individual. In a recent exchange of papers in Zootaxa, the validity of descriptions based on a holotype which is not a full, dead specimen (such as this) have been discussed (Dubois & Nemésio 2007, Donegan 2008, Nemésio 2009). Dubois and Nemésio have expressed the viewpoint that descriptions based on live individuals are not valid nomenclatural acts. I have expressed the contrary view. Other recent descriptions based on holotypes which are not killed have relied solely upon photographs and, in some instances, samples taken from live individuals (see discussion in Donegan 2008). -

Translated by Matthew Carrano Department of Anatomical Sciences SUNY at Stony Brook, September 1999 The bones of large dinosaurian reptiles described in this work were brought to me by my good friend, Mr. Dr. Félix Salètes, primary physician for the Madagascar expedition, from the environs of Maevarana, where he was charged with installing a provisional hospital. This locality is situated on the right bank of the eastern arm of the Betsiboka, 46 kilometers south of Majunga, on the northwest coast of the island of Madagascar. Not having the time to occupy himself with paleontological studies, Dr. Salètes charged one of his auxiliary agents, Mr. Landillon, company sergeant-major of the marines, with researching the fossils in the environs of the Maevarana post. Thanks to the zeal and activity of Mr. Landillon, who was not afraid to gravely expose his health in these researches, I have been able to receive the precious bones of terrestrial reptiles that are the object of this note, along with an important series of fossil marine shells. I eagerly seize the opportunity here to thank Mr. Landillon for his important shipment and for the very precise geological data which he communicated to me concerning the environs of Maevarana, and of which I will now give a short sketch. 1st. Their special sta- tus and practical use are discussed in relation to the description and naming of taxonomic zoological diversity. Our current system, known as Linnaean nomenclature, is governed by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. The name of a species is fxed by its name-bearing type specimen, linking the scientifc name of a species to the type specimen frst des- ignated for that species. The name-bearing type specimen is not necessarily a typical example of the species, while establish- ment of the boundaries of a species requires empirical taxonomic studies. The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature allows for the naming of new species in the absence of preserved specimens. However, photos and DNA sequences should not function as primary type material, while new species should not be described and named without deposition of at least one type specimen in a collection. Philosophically, species are individuals, spatiotemporally restricted entities. Therefore, Linnaean species names are proper names, which do not defne the taxon but serve as a label, providing an ostensive defni- tion of a species. Paratypes have no name-bearing function but, nevertheless, are highly valued specimens in natural history collections. -

Paleontological resource inventories within units of the National Park Service have revealed that body and trace fossils of non-avian dinosaurs have been documented in at least 21 National Park Service areas. In addition there are two historically associated occurrences, one equivocal occurrence, two NPS areas with dinosaur tracks in building stone, and one case where fossils have been found immediately outside of a monument’s boundaries. To date, body fossils of non- avian dinosaurs are documented at 14 NPS areas, may also be present at another, and are historically associated with two other parks. Dinosaur trace fossils have been documented at 17 NPS areas and are visible in building stone at two parks. Most records of NPS dinosaur fossils come from park units on the Colorado Plateau, where body fossils have been found in Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous rocks at many locations, and trace fossils are widely distributed in Upper Triassic and Jurassic rocks. Two NPS units are particularly noted for their dinosaur fossils: Dinosaur National Monument (Upper Triassic through Lower Cretaceous) and Big Bend National Park (Upper Cretaceous). -

Botanists have no interest in restoring the purity of the prelapsarian language of par- adise, in which Adam called the beasts of the field and the fowl of the air and presumably also the plants of the meadow “‘by their own names,’”those proper to them in the deepest possible sense.1 They are untroubled by the yawning gap between word and thing and the conventionalism of linguistic signs. -

To date, more than 40 species have been described, even though validity of some of them is questionable (Horák et al. 2002). Members of the genus use various birds as final hosts, but they attract attention mostly as causative agents of hypersensitive skin reaction (cercarial dermatitis or swimmer’s itch) in mammals including humans. As this is one of the re-emerging diseases, the study of Trichobilharzia has been intensified in the last few decades (Horák et al. 2015). Systematics of the genus Trichobilharzia remains chaotic due to the inadequate species descriptions (including that of the type species) in the first half of the 20th century. -

Abstract The genus Crinum L. represented by eight species in Bangladesh is revised. The species occurring in Bangladesh are Crinum amabile Donn, C. amoenum Roxb., C. asiaticum L., C. defixum Ker-Gawl., C. jagus (Thomps.) Dandy, C. latifolium L., C. pratense Herb. and C. stenophyllum Baker. Each species is described with updated nomenclature, important synonyms, English and Bangla names, phenology, specimens examined, chromosome number, habitat, distribution, economic value and mode of propagation. A dichotomous bracketed key to the species and illustrations are also provided. Introduction The classification of the lilioid monocots has long been problematic (Chase et al., 2009). Some authors treated all lilioid monocots including the genus Crinum L. in one family, Liliaceae s.l. (Cronquist, 1981). Though the genus Crinum L. was formerly included in the family Liliaceae, the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG) reevaluated the taxonomic position of this genus and placed it in the family Amaryllidaceae (APG III, 2009). Linnaeus established the genus Crinum in 1737 recognising four species, viz. Crinum latifolium, C. asiaticum, C. americanum and C. africanum (Nordal, 1977). The pantropical genus Crinum L. consists of about 112 species distributed in tropical Africa, America, Asia and Australia (Govaerts et al., 2012). The genus is most diverse in Africa, particularly sub-Saharan Africa. Biogeographical analyses place the origin of Crinum in southern Africa (Meerow et al., 2003; Kwembeya et al., 2007).
