Rice Jr. This week in history: 1980 Family of Rotary Membership Chair Millions tune in to find out who shot Stephanie Woody Bulletin Editor J.R. Club Programs Chair On November 21, 1980, 350 million people around the world tune in Denton B. Ashway Sergeant-at-Arms to televisions popular primetime drama Dallas to find out who shot J.R. Ewing, the character fans loved to hate. J.R. had been shot on the season-ending episode the previous March 21, which now Terri L. Willett Club Socials Chair stands as one of televisions most famous cliffhangers. The plot twist inspired widespread media coverage and left America wondering Who shot J.R.? for the next eight months. The Jeremy P. Skinner Club Service Chair November 21 episode solved the mystery, identifying Kristin Shepard, J.R.s wifes sister and his former mistress, as the culprit. Burton Blackmar The CBS television network debuted the first five-episode pilot Youth Services Chair season of Dallas in 1978; it went on to run for another 12 full- length seasons. The first show of its kind, Dallas was dubbed a primetime soap opera for its serial plots and dramatic tales of George Galphin moral excess. The show revolved around the relations of two Texas iPast President oil families: the wealthy, successful Ewing family and the perpetually down-on-their-luck Barnes family. The families patriarchs, Jock Ewing and Digger Barnes, were former partners locked in a years- The Four-Way Test long feud over oil fields Barnes claimed had been stolen by Ewing. Of the things we think, say or do... Ewings youngest son Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and Barnes daughter Is it the TRUTH? Pam (Victoria Principal) had married, linking the battling clans even Is it FAIR to all concerned? more closely. The character of J.R. Ewing, Bobbys oldest brother Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER and a greedy, conniving, womanizing scoundrel, was played by Larry FRIENDSHIPS? Hagman. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? As J.R. had many enemies, audiences were hard-pressed to guess who was responsible for his attempted murder. That summer, the question Who Shot J.R.? entered the national lexicon, becoming a popular t-shirt slogan, and heightening anticipation of the soaps third season, which was to air in the fall. After a much-talked-about contract dispute with Hagman was finally settled, the season was delayed because of a Screen Actors Guild strike, much to the dismay of Dallas fans. When it finally aired, the episode revealing J.R.s shooter became one of televisions most watched shows, with an audience of 83 million people in the U.S. alonea full 76 percent of all U.S. televisions on that night were tuned inand helped put Dallas into greater worldwide circulation. It also popularized the use of the cliffhanger by television writers. The shooting of J.R. wasnt Dallas' only notorious plot twist. In September 1986, fans learned that the entire previous season, in which main character Bobby Ewing had died, was merely a dream of Pams. The shows writers had killed the Bobby character off because Duffy had decided to leave the show. When he agreed to return, they featured him stepping out of the shower on the season- ending cliffhanger, and then were forced the next season to explain his sudden reappearance. The last premiere episode of Dallas aired on May 3, 1991. A spin-off, Knots Landing, aired from December 27, 1979 until May 13, 1993. Dallas remains in syndication around the world. https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/millions-tune-in-to-find-out-who-shot-j-r Please keep the following in mind when considering attending in-person meetings: Attending in-person meetings is not required. February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. ‘HEALING HANDS’ CAST BIOS EDDIE CIBRIAN (Buddy Hoyt) – A versatile actor who continues to expand his career in television and film, Eddie Cibrian is fast becoming one of the leading young actors in the business today. Born and raised in California, Cibrian began his acting career at the age of 12, landing a Coca-Cola commercial on his very first audition. Following the success of that spot, Cibrian appeared in numerous other national commercials. Upon entering high school, Cibrian decided to put his acting career on hold to pursue his other passion: Sports. He excelled in every sport he competed in – football, baseball, soccer and volleyball – and graduated high school with several All-State honors. Cibrian continued his successful athletic career when he entered UCLA’s football program in the fall of 1991. Unfortunately, an injury during his first year on the team left Cibrian sidelined, so he decided to return to acting. Cibrian immediately landed several national commercials and soon after, starred in Malcolm- Jamal Warner’s Emmy® Award winning television special “Kids Killing Kids.” The attention Cibrian garnered for his appearance on Warner’s special led to several soap opera auditions, including one for “The Young and the Restless.” The show’s producers were impressed with Cibrian’s acting abilities and created a character for him on the show, that of the conniving Matt Clark. Within three months, Cibrian had received so much fan mail that CBS signed him to a three-year contract. After appearing on “The Young and the Restless” for two years, Cibrian starred in several television shows including “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Baywatch Nights,” “Beverly Hills, 90210,” “Sabrina The Teenage Witch” and “Saved by the Bell: The College Years.” It was not long before Aaron Spelling offered Cibrian the starring role of Cole Deschanel on the NBC daytime drama, “Sunset Beach.” Just five months after his debut, TV Guide named Cibrian one of Daytime’s 12 Hottest Stars.

New On Video & DVD Yes Man Jim Carrey returns to hilarious form with this romantic comedy in the same vein as the Carrey classic Liar Liar. After a few stints in more serious features like Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and The Number 23, Carrey seems right at home playing Carl, a divorcé who starts out the film depressed and withdrawn, scared of taking a risk. Pressured by his best friend, Peter (Bradley Cooper), to get his act together or be stuck with a lonely life, Carl attends a New Age self-help seminar intended to change "no men" like Carl into "yes men" willing to meet life's challenges with gusto. Carl is reluctant at first, but finds the seminar to be ultimately life-changing when he's coerced into giving the "say yes" attitude a try. As the first opportunity to say yes presents itself, Carl hesitantly utters the three-letter word, setting the stage for a domino effect of good rewards, and giving Carrey a platform to show off his comic chops. But over time Carl realizes that saying yes to everything indiscriminately can reap results as complicated and messy as his life had become when saying "no" was his norm. The always-quirky Zooey Deschanel adds her signature charm as Carl's love interest, Allison. An unlikely match at first glance, the pair actually develop great chemistry as the story progresses, the actors play- ing off each other's different styles of humor. Rhys Darby also shines as Carl's loveable but clueless boss, and That 70s Show's Danny Masterson appears as another one of Carl's friends.
