From the socially conservative 1950s to the permissive 1970s, this project explores the ways in which insanity in women has been linked to their femininity and the expression or repression of their sexuality. An analysis of films from Hollywood’s post-classical period (The Three Faces of Eve (1957), Lizzie (1957), Lilith (1964), Repulsion (1965), Images (1972) and 3 Women (1977)) demonstrates the societal tendency to label a woman’s behavior as mad when it does not fit within the patriarchal mold of how a woman should behave. Perversely yet quite appropriately, it is perhaps best known in the Anglophone world for this same obscurity: the place few people have ever even heard of. To a large degree, it is this very environment, with perhaps some unusually extreme historical and geographical characteristics, that has moulded the health provision in present‐day CAR. While the nation has all the paraphernalia of statehood, such as fixed international boundaries, a national anthem, a flag, a recognized government and so on, what is rather striking to the observer is CAR’s apparent statelessness.

  • Stigma on the Screen: a Textual Analysis of Mental Illness in Film
    STIGMA ON THE SCREEN: A TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF MENTAL ILLNESS IN FILM by ALEXIS IAN RAINEY (under the direction of Jennifer Smith) ABSTRACT This study seeks to explore the representation of the mentally ill in film and the consequences of these representations. The origin and recent growth of negative stigma surrounding mental illness is identified and discussed. The study will consist of a textual analysis of films One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Girl, Interrupted, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, and a British television film, Appropriate Adult. Analysis of each film will include taking a closer look at the accuracy of the representations, investigating how closely aligned each is with its source materials, as well as an examination of the evolution of these aspects over time. Using these findings, the consequences of the representations and a discussion of the progression of mental illness in film will be discussed. The Notebook: the Accidental Alzheimer’s Awareness Campaign By: Danielle Waldron Waldron 2 "The person with Alzheimer's disease is in a giant classroom every day, one in which he or she never has the exact answer" (Marley 2013). Everyone can relate to the feeling. That feeling when your teacher calls on you, and you either were not paying attention or just completely do not know the answer to her question; “the feeling of our collar tightening, voice faltering, palms sweating, and face blushing” (Marley 2013). Everyone remembers. It is embarrassing, painful, and awkward. Every single day, those with Alzheimer’s disease deal with these emotions, making it distasteful and uncomfortable when media sources glamorize this illness for monetary gain. In this day and age, people typically do not read scholarly journals everyday to learn about current societal concerns; nor do they frequent university auditoriums on Friday nights to educate themselves about diseases or other pertinent issues in society.
