I found the difference in the inking of the issues fascinating, the first issues are inked by Colleta who appears to make liberal use of correction fluid and seems to have a heavier hand. Jack Kirby born Jacob Kurtzberg was one of the most influential, recognizable, and prolific artists in American comic books, and the co-creator of such enduring characters and popular culture icons as the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Hulk, Captain America, and hundreds of others stretching back to the earliest days of the medium. And it raises the question - why these four men? He is drowning, as a large fish comes to devour him. Challengers of the Unknown Omnibus by Kirby Writer Six months after the FF debuted, Marvel Comics published the first issue of The Incredible Hulk , imagining an uncontrollable monster as a superhero. This is widely considered to be a dry run to what Kirby would do with the pop culture changing "Fantastic Four" in the the 60's. The Essentials 1. By the end of this stretch, Lee and Kirby had developed their own formulas, which everyone else in the industry would fall back on for the next 40 years. For most modern readers, sadly, the book will appear as outdated and therefore not worthy of being read. Don't have an Account? Not recommended for a casual reading experience, but worth a look for rabid scholars of the medium. What about peer pressure, advertising, parental example, cultural influence of which comics are a part , etc. I think that has some real merits. This time though, they may have bitten off more than they can chew! To create our Challengers of the Unknown Omnibus by Kirby Reviews Stories fun to read through it dose lack character development. A worthwhile artifact but not essential. Kirby's art is amazing as usual, and the stories have that ingenuity and freshness that is difficult to find in comics nowadays. But welcome nontheless. The bottom line is that when it comes to kids - who are demonstrably more susceptible to outward influences - then we should exercise caution over what we let them read, watch or listen to. JOE SINNOTT “THE WORLD’S GREATEST COMIC INKER!” Interviewed by Alan Doshna The Official Joe Sinnott Website http://www.joesinnott.com/ Few are the artists in any field who can dependably produce consistently outstanding work in their given field. Such a one, however, is renowned comic book penciller and inker Joe Sinnott.Born in Upstate New York in 1926, Joe is probably best known for his long tenure on The Fantastic Four, embellishing Jack Kirby’s pencils, The Mighty Thor, Captain America and others. Besides K irby, other whose work he has inked is a literal or “graphic”) Who’s Who” of comic book greats, such as Steve Ditko, Gil Kane, Neal Adams, John Buscema, John Byrne, Carmine Infantino and many, many more. Joe took some time for an interview with us recently. Q: Could you share with us a little bit about your early life and background? A: Oh, sure. Of course I was born in Saugerties, I still live in Saugerties. And I spent three years down in the city when I went to the Cartoonists and Illustrators School (Note: later called The School of Visual Arts). Of course, before that, I served in the Navy Seabees in WW II. And I always drew, I know you’d probably want to know that, ever since I can remember, when I was three years old. My mother had a boarding house, and one of the teachers gave me a box of crayons for my birthday when I was three years old, and it had an Indian on it. I can still recall the Indian, and I drew that Indian over and over and over again with those crayons, and we also had another roomer in the house that had been in the German submarine service in WW I.

The purpose of this research is to adapt the approaches used by prominent and influential writers and artists in the American superhero/action comic-book field to create an engaging Australian hero comic book. Further, the aim of this thesis is to bridge the gap between the lack of academic writing on the professional practice of the Australian comic industry. In order to achieve this, I explored and learned the methods these prominent and professional US writers and artists use. Compared to the American industry, the creating of comic books in Australia has rarely been documented, particularly in a formal capacity or from a contemporary perspective. The process I used was to navigate through the research and studio practice from the perspective of a solo artist with an interest to learn, and to develop into an artist with a firmer understanding of not only the medium being engaged, but the context in which the medium is being created.

THE ALUMINUM AGE: POSTMODERN THEMES IN AMERICAN COMICS CIRCA 1985- 2018 by AMY COLLERTON Under the Direction of John McMillian, PhD ABSTRACT This thesis seeks to update the fan-made system of organization for comic book history. Because academia ignored comics for much of their history, fans of the medium were forced to design their own system of historical organization. Over time, this system of ages was adopted not only by the larger industry, but also by scholars. However, the system has not been modified to make room for comics published in the 21st century. Through the analysis of a selection modern comics, including Marvel’s Civil War and DC Comics’ Infinite Crisis, this thesis suggests a continuation of the age system, the Aluminum Age (2001-the present). Comics published during the Aluminum Age incorporate Postmodern themes and are unique to the historical context in which they were published.

In the history of comic book art, Vince Colletta is perhaps the most prolific inker ever, and certainly the most controver- sial. He jumped in at the last minute to rescue hundreds of comic books about to miss their printing deadline, often racing through the work of artists who fans say he should have worshiped. In the 1960s he gave Jack Kirby’s Thor an atmospheric look many fans love even 40 years later, but got kicked off Kirby’s Fourth World comics in the 1970s for omitting details.
