    Hans Ulrich Obrist A Brief History of Curating JRP | RINGIER & LES PRESSES DU REEL 2 To the memory of Anne d’Harnoncourt, Walter Hopps, Pontus Hultén, Jean Leering, Franz Meyer, and Harald Szeemann 3 Christophe Cherix When Hans Ulrich Obrist asked the former director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Anne d’Harnoncourt, what advice she would give to a young curator entering the world of today’s more popular but less experimental museums, in her response she recalled with admiration Gilbert & George’s famous ode to art: “I think my advice would probably not change very much; it is to look and look and look, and then to look again, because nothing replaces looking … I am not being in Duchamp’s words ‘only retinal,’ I don’t mean that. I mean to be with art—I always thought that was a wonderful phrase of Gilbert & George’s, ‘to be with art is all we ask.’” How can one be fully with art? In other words, can art be experienced directly in a society that has produced so much discourse and built so many structures to guide the spectator? Gilbert & George’s answer is to consider art as a deity: “Oh Art where did you come from, who mothered such a strange being. For what kind of people are you: are you for the feeble-of-mind, are you for the poor-at-heart, art for those with no soul. Are you a branch of nature’s fantastic network or are you an invention of some ambitious man? Do you come from a long line of arts? He studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna and became a sculptor and installation artist, part of the Actionist and Performance Art Mouvement in the sixties and seventies. BEAKING THE RULES The sculptures known as ‘Adaptives’, began in the seventies and are considered his first significant works as humorously indeterminate objects. They are both artful sculptures and tactile gadgets, with their artistic function considered completed only once viewers have interacted with it. It is to say they needed to be touched, hold, worn or played with. With this unique approach he is one of the first artists to break the established codes between the artworks and the spectator. West, whose Art was influenced by his interest in psychoanalytic texts, describes his ‘Adaptives’ as prostheses, a term that alludes to their incomplete status as well as their connection to the body. Since then, he deeply explored sculpture in all its aspects, but mostly the communication created, all the actions and the reactions they can provoke to its audience members. FROM INTERACTION TO FURNITURE West garnered attention from the larger public in the mid-eighties, when he began producing furniture. He often crafted chairs and couches by welding together pieces of scrap metal, a technique that reflects his interest in collage. Additionally, West creates colorful, upholstered furniture. West’s works have been exhibited throughout the world for more than 30 years and at a variety of venues, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitechapel Gallery in London, the Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna, the Gagosian Gallery in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museo Tamayo in Mexico.

    Franz West For the first time, the Almine Rech Gallery Brussels is devoting an exhibition to recent Double Squint works by Franz West. March 25 — May 22, 2010 Born in 1947 in Vienna, where he lives and works, West is one of the key figures of the international art scene.Franz West studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. When he started out in the sixties, Viennese Actionism dominated the Austrian art scene. This movement’s focus on the body and performance echoes throughout his oeuvre, though West himself claims his work is a reaction against Actionism. In 1974, he created his first “Paßstücke” (‘Fitting Pieces’ or ‘Adaptables’), a series of small sculptures made of wood and fragments of wire netting covered in papier mâché painted in white. These sculptures were designed to be manipulated or worn by visitors. These modest and interactive pieces, deliberately stripped of any appeal, distinguish the artist’s approach. Indeed, West, who claims to follow Joseph Beuys’ theories, has stated that “the Paßstück is a primary process of art”. In the course of the eighties, some of these sculptures, redeveloped on a large scale, would become outsize aluminium pieces or installations. These works extend the formal and conceptual relations of the Paßstücke: made with the same materials – which are, in appearance, both humble and raw – they explore the relation to the body as well as to social issues. In 1989, on the occasion of an exhibition at PS1 in New York, West installed metal sofas in the passageways between the venue’s different rooms, while a selection of scores by Viennese composers played in the background.

Their collection has been constantly growing since the late 1970s, and it provides an incomparable view of the development of contemporary art from the 1980s onward. This is a progressive statement on behalf of contemporary art that is anchored in social issues and sees itself as a form of communication. The rationale behind the collection, which is held in Herzogenrath near Aachen and in Berlin, is both creative and productive, and the two collectors’ practice can be described as a particularly free-spirited form of cultural production. The act of collecting is realized less in the processes of keeping artworks and completing a collection, and is instead understood mainly as an invitation to participate in the public production of relationships. This very pragmatic and hands-on approach is manifested in sensual and unconventional gestures of presenting, including the principle of “comparative seeing.” In this sense, the Class Reunion exhibition will unravel an exciting, humorous, and surprising dialogue between the diverse artistic positions in the collection, establishing unexpected points of contact.
