  • Austrian Airlines Relies on Innovative Drone Technology for Aircraft
September 9th, 2019 / 061e Austrian Airlines Relies on Innovative Drone Technology for Aircraft Inspections Automation: autonomous drone inspects paintwork damage on Airbus A320 aircraft Speed advantage: quicker aircraft availability Expanded deployment: extension of drone inspections to the Embraer fleet in September Austrian Airlines has been testing a completely new technology for the purpose of carrying out technical inspections of its aircraft fleet. The aircraft are checked for paintwork or structural damage by autonomous drones developed by the French start-up “Donecle”. This innovation not only reduces the workload for technicians of Austria’s national carrier, but the shorter duration of the checks enables quicker availability of the aircraft in daily flight operations. Now, the checks can be done in less than two hours instead of the previous time required of four to ten hours. “Our aspiration at Austrian Technik is to stay up-to-date when it comes to new developments. Innovative systems, such as these drones, perfectly support us to further enhance our stability in flight operations and avoid flight cancellations,” said Michael Kaye, Vice President Austrian Airlines Technical Operations, commenting on the advantages of the new drone technology. Drone accelerates checks The fully autonomous drone will be tested until the end of this year. Under the supervision of an aircraft technician, the drone implements inspections on the exterior of the aircraft in the Austrian Airlines hangar with state-of-the-art, patented laser technology. The system flies autonomously, from takeoff to landing, to inspect all areas of the aircraft. The drone takes a high-resolution image every second.

  • News Release May 3, 2021
Joint news release May 3, 2021 Nature as a role model: Lufthansa Group and BASF roll out sharkskin technology ▪ From 2022, Lufthansa Cargo will equip all Boeing 777 freighters with AeroSHARK ▪ Innovative surface technology from Lufthansa Technik and BASF improves fuel efficiency and helps airlines to reach sustainability targets The lower the frictional resistance of an aircraft in the air, the lower the fuel consumption. Using nature as a role model, the aviation industry has been intensively researching ways to reduce aerodynamic drag for many years. Now Lufthansa Technik and BASF have succeeded in making the breakthrough as part of a joint project. AeroSHARK, a surface film that mimics the fine structure of a shark’s skin, is to be rolled out on Lufthansa Cargo’s entire freighter fleet from the beginning of 2022, making the aircraft more economical and reducing emissions. The surface structure consisting of riblets measuring around 50 micrometers imitates the properties of sharkskin and therefore optimizes the aerodynamics on flow-related parts of the aircraft. This means that less fuel is needed overall. For Lufthansa Cargo’s Boeing 777F freighters, Lufthansa Technik estimates a drag reduction of more than one percent. For the entire fleet of ten aircraft, this translates to annual savings of around 3,700 tons of kerosene and just under 11,700 tons of CO2 emissions, which is the equivalent of 48 individual freight flights from Frankfurt to Shanghai. “Responsibility for the environment and society is a key strategic topic for us,” says Christina Foerster, Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG with responsibility for sustainability.

Olaganathan et al.: Managing Safety Risks in Airline Maintenance Outsourcing Managing Safety Risks in Airline Maintenance Outsourcing Due to the Civil Aeronautics Act of 1938, the aviation industry in the US faced less competition for nearly 40 years i.e., between 1938 and 1978. Aircraft maintenance is an important and necessary task that is required to maintain the airworthiness of the aircraft, ensuring it is safe for operation. Before deregulation, the airlines normally carried out the maintenance tasks in-house, but this trend later changed. Two developments that occurred in the aviation industry led to the shift from in-house maintenance to outsourcing. The first is the airline deregulation act (1978) which removed the barriers and paved way for the expansion of the aviation industry.
