The Glories of Tulasi Devi Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis The Glories of Tulasi Devi Date: 2010-02-27 Author: Narahari Krishna das Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Gurudeva. The Lord states in the Gita that He accepts a leaf, flower, fruit or water from His bhaktas if it is offered with devotion. These items are easily available and by offering these things one can get His blessings to enter into His kingdom. And from the scriptures we hear that the Lord has great liking for Tulasi leaves and He is very much pleased if we offer tulasi leaves to Him. There is an interesting incident in the Mahabharata in this connection. After the Kurukshetra war was over and Yudhishtira became the King, the King performed a great Aswamedha sacrifice. After the sacrifice, he question Lord Krishna on a variety of spiritual subjects and he requested Lord Krishna to explain the process of devotional service. The Lord spoke elaborately on this subject and this section is popularly known as ‘Vaishnava Dharma’. In this section the King asked, "Which flowers can be used by your devotees to worship you?". The Lord then gave a list of flowers beginning with Jasmine etc., which are dear to Him. Then the Lord gave a hierarchy of the flowers He likes (Mahabharata- Ashwamedhika Parva 14.96.15). sarveṣām api puṣpāṇāṃ sahasraguṇam utpalam tasmāt padmaṃ tathā rājan padmāt tu śatapatrakam tasmāt sahasrapatraṃ tu puṇḍarīkaṃ tataḥ param puṇḍarīkasahasrāt tu tulasī guṇato 'dhikā Of all the flowers, O King, the bluish lotus flower (Utpalam) is thousand times more qualified for My worship. Greater than that is the red lotus (Padmam) flower. Of the red lotus, the lotus with hundred petals is more qualified. Better than that is the red lotus with thousand petals. Better than this is the white lotus flower (Pundarika). And better than white lotus flower with thousand petals is the Tulsi leaf, which is even more qualified for My worship. Srila Prabhupada therefore introduced the worship of Tulasi Devi in the Krishna Consciousness movement and encouraged all devotees to offer Tulsi leaves to the Lord. Srila Prabhupada also taught the devotees to add Tulasi leaves while offering bhoga to the Lord. Srila Prabhupada also quoted about Tulasi worship in many places. " A householder worshipping Tulasi Devi will make vigorous spiritual advancement." (Cc Madhya Lila 23.261), Tadiya (that which is dear to the Lord) means the Tulasi leaves, the devotees of Krishna, the birthplace of Krishna, Mathura, and the Vedic literature Srimad Bhagavatam. Krishna is very eager to see His devotee serve Tulsi, Vaishnavas, Mathura, and Bhagavatam." (Caitanya Caritamrta, Madhya-Lila 22.125- Lord Caitanya's instruction to Sanatana Goswami). There is a beautiful verse explaining the Lord's liking for Tulasi leaves. tulasī-dala-mātreṇa jalasya culukena vā vikrīṇīte svam ātmānaṁ bhaktebhyo bhakta-vatsalaḥ Sri Krishna, who is very affectionate toward His devotees, sells Himself to a devotee who offers merely a tulasi leaf and a palmful of water. There are two interesting pastimes proving that the Lord gave Himself when devotees offered Him Tulasi leaves. From the Caitanya Caritamrita, we learn that Sri Advaita Acharya had a Narasimha Saligrama and worshipped the Lord in the Saligrama form with Ganges water and Tulasi Leaves. He prayed to the Supreme Lord to appear in this world to deliver the people of Kali Yuga. Pleased by this simple worship, the Lord advented Himself as Lord Caitanya and propagated the chanting of Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. Once Narada muni visited the palace of Lord Krishna in Dwaraka. He met Satyabhama and Rukmini and told that they should give charity to him something which equals Lord Krishna's weight and in this way manifest their devotion to the Lord. Satyabhama always had the opinion that her devotion was always greater than Rukmini's devotion. Satyabhama made the Lord sit on the balance on one side and on the other side she started keeping her jewels. But the jewels did not match Krishna's weight. She then completely emptied all her treasury and kept all the jewels and gold in her possession. Still the riches did not become equal to the Lord's weight. She was completely baffled and finally accepted her defeat. Rukmini whose attitude was very meek and humble, prayed intensely to the Lord and Narada Muni and placed a small leaf of Tulasi in the balance. The balance then became equal on both side. Narada Muni then happily accepted the Tulasi Leaf as the charity from Rukmini. By these pastimes, the Lord is conveying the simple and sublime nature of devotional service and how one can attain His Kingdom easily in this age of Kali. I pray at the lotus feet of the all merciful eternal acharya H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj, Srila Prabhupada and the Supreme Lord so that I will get some inspiration to worship Tulasi devi and obtain the Lord's blessings in devotional service.     Is the Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya connected to the Madhva line? Is the Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya connected to the Madhva line? – Jagadananda Das – The relationship of the Madhva-sampradaya to the Gaudiya Vaishnavas is one that has been sensitive for more than 200 years. Not only did it rear its head in the time of Baladeva Vidyabhushan, when the legitimacy of the Gaudiyas was challenged in Jaipur, but repeatedly since then. Bhaktivinoda Thakur wrote in his 1892 work Mahaprabhura siksha that those who reject this connection are “the greatest enemies of Sri Krishna Chaitanya’s family of followers.” In subsequent years, nearly every scholar of Bengal Vaishnavism has cast his doubts on this connection including S. K. De, Surendranath Dasgupta, Sundarananda Vidyavinoda, Friedhelm Hardy and others. The degree to which these various authors reject this connection is different. According to Gaudiya tradition, Madhavendra Puri appeared in the 14th century. He was a guru of the Brahma or Madhva-sampradaya, one of the four (Brahma, Sri, Rudra and Sanaka) legitimate Vaishnava lineages of the Kali Yuga. Madhavendra’s disciple Isvara Puri took Sri Krishna Chaitanya as his disciple. The followers of Sri Chaitanya are thus members of the Madhva line. The authoritative sources for this identification with the Madhva lineage are principally four: Kavi Karnapura’s Gaura-ganoddesa-dipika (1576), the writings of Gopala Guru Goswami from around the same time, Baladeva’s Prameya-ratnavali from the late 18th century, and anothe late 18th century work, Narahari’s

    SRILA BHAKTISIDDHANTA SARASVATI GOSWAMI MAHARAJA INTRODUCTION FOR THE BOOK ON BHAKTISIDDHANTA Sarasvati THAKURA During the late '70's and '80's, preaching duties in Bengal now and then broughtme in contact with direct disciples of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, and also with disciples of his disciples. From them I heard stories and teachings of Sarasvati Thakura. Hearing little bits here and there, my heart filled with wonder, and also pride on being connected with such a powerful transcendental personality. My eagerness to hear more increased. From my very beginning days in Krsna consciousness I--and surely all others in ISKCON also--was attracted by the personality of Saraswati Thakura. I would often look up at the big painting of him on the wall of our Bury Place (London) temple. It was as if his serious gaze came down directly from Goloka Vrindavana. He was known as "singha-guru"--a spiritual master as fearsome to non-devotees as a lion. Who would not be impressed on hearing of his austerity, learning, strictness, and above all his unflinching devotion to the lotus feet of Sri-Sri Gaura-Nitai and Sri-Sri Radha-Krsna, and his uncompromising, determined preaching of Their glories? Our own glorious spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Srila Prabhupada, was another transcendental "superman." Srila Prabhupada was utterly surrendered at the lotus feet of his guru, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, and always considered himself a humble servant of his spiritual master. Those of unbiased mind understand both to be empowered acaryas, saktyavesa-avataras. By his unbreakable bond of devotion to Srila Saraswati Thakura, Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada has, by initiating us, linked us also eternally to his spiritual master.

    Women Saints in Gaudiya Vaishnavism - Jagadananda Das - ​ ​ ​ There are few traditional societies in which women have played a dominant historical role. In this respect, Gaudiya Vaishnavism is no different. The egalitarianism of bhakti movements, which stress the universality of devotion and deny any disqualifications based on birth, sex, or caste, seems to have had limited real effects on the actual social circumstances of any of these classes of people. There are some, including the eminent Bengali historian, Ramakanta Chakravarti, who feel that the status of women was improved in Chaitanya Vaishnavism, mainly due to the singular example of Jahnava Devi. (1) Indeed, it does ​ ​ appear that literacy rates among women (and men) in Vaishnava castes in Bengal were somewhat higher than in other, comparable groups, but this evidence is far from overwhelming. Today, some women may be found playing the role of guru, especially ministering to other women, and there are some Chaitanya Vaishnava women who sing padavali kirtan or give discourses on Vaishnava texts. On the whole, however, despite their dominant numbers at most religious events, the role of women continues to be a supporting one and subordinate to that of men. One question that needs analysis is whether the importance of Radha in the Vaishnava pantheon and the general weight given to the female principle and feminine virtues in the Gaudiya Vaishnava culture has had any influence on the status of women. Many feminist analysts have pointed out that the worship of goddesses has no proven relation to any such amelioration in societies where such worship is conducted.

    Bhoomi Puja at ISKCON Mysore In the city of monuments, ISKCON Mysore plans to build Nava Brindavan Dham – a spectacular cultural monument for social and spiritual upliftment. It was the desire of Srila Prabhupada, our Founder-Acharya, that monumental temples be built - temples that disseminate spiritual knowledge to all, thereby creating a world of unity and peace. Nava Brindavan Dham will be a grand religious and cultural complex, with landscape featuring attractive musical and light shows depicting Indian culture and tradition. Designed in neo-classical style, the cultural complex on nine acres of land, harmoniously integrates the age old charm of Hoysala architecture and modern architectural forms, blending ethnicity with abstractness. This prestigious project is estimated to cost Rs.120 crores and shall enrich the glory of Indian heritage. Nava Brindavan Dham will be a centre for disseminating the profound message of the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam to everyone. It is a project to support preservation of Vedic culture, tradition and sanatana dharma.
