Examining Don DeLillo’s Cosmopolis, this essay develops an alternative approach to the politics of literature that attends to the style and form of the novel. The form and style of Cosmopolis emphasize the novel’s own dissonance with the world it criticizes; they moreover suggest a politics of poetic worldmaking intent on eliciting collective agency over the commonness of language. -

G. Ballard’s contention, that ‘the act of intercourse is now always a model for something else,’ to show that Don DeLillo uses a particular sexual, cultural economy of adultery, understood in its many loaded cultural and literary contexts, as a model for semantic reproduction. I contend that DeLillo’s fiction evinces a promiscuous model of language that structurally reflects the myth of the adulterous triangle. The thesis makes a significant intervention into DeLillo scholarship by challenging Paul Maltby’s suggestion that DeLillo’s linguistic model is Romantic and pure. My analysis of the narrative operations of adultery in his work reveals the alternative promiscuous model. I discuss ten DeLillo novels and one play – Americana, Players, The Names, White Noise, Libra, Mao II, Underworld, the play Valparaiso, The Body Artist, Cosmopolis, and the pseudonymous Amazons – that feature adultery narratives. -
Review: Paul Giaimo, Appreciating Don Delillo
Paul Giaimo, Appreciating Don DeLillo, Praeger, Santa Barbara, 2011; pp.188; RRP US$44.95 hardback. Paul Giaimo’s Appreciating Don DeLillo: The Moral Force of a Writer’s Work is a study of morality and religion in Don DeLillo’s oeuvre of fiction. Giaimo continues Amy Hungerford and John Paul Russo’s insights into the trope of religion, but vitally fleshes it out into a book-length examination of DeLillo’s Jesuit influences. As Giaimo states in the preface, his purpose centres on the ‘underlying moral lessons of DeLillo’s work’ (p.v). Such an investigation into the novelist’s religious roots and consequential literary influences is well overdue in DeLillo scholarship. With the book divided into seven chapters, I now give attention to each turn. In Chapter 1, ‘Don DeLillo and the Novel – Neither Modern nor Postmodern’, Giaimo makes the case that ‘DeLillo’s tendency is to show some elements of mimetic realism as well as those features of modernism and postmodernism’ (p.1). He begins by rightly noting that the defining trend of DeLillo criticism is to align his works with postmodernism, and he deviates from this through a discussion of the unflattering presentation of postmodern theorists in DeLillo’s works. He states clearly that ‘[n]either modernism nor postmodernism really applies as a label for DeLillo’s work’ (p.16), and shows how DeLillo’s characters’ self- destruction and lack of morality are detrimental to their lives, although hope continues as a ‘potent moral force’ (p.21). Chapter 2 delves into fascinating examples of morality presented in DeLillo’s early novels, Americana, Great Jones Street, Ratner’s Star, Running Dog, and Players. -

DeLillo’s works combine art and technology through their depictions of protagonists whom I characterize as rogue capitalists. In Cosmopolis, Eric Packer is a rogue capitalist who yearns to escape the world of financial speculation after seeing a horrific event, while in Zero K, the rogue capitalist figure, Ross Lockhart, wishes to leave the contemporary era by freezing his body. ROMANIAN JOURNAL OF ENGLISH STUDIES RJES 16 /2019 DOI: 10.1515/RJES-2019-0002 “CATASTROPHE IS OUR BEDTIME STORY”: THE MEDIA-FUELLED OBSESSION WITH DEATH IN DON DELILLO’S ZERO K ADINA BAYA West University of Timisoara Abstract: Death and the mass-media represent two recurring and connected presences throughout Don DeLillo’s fiction. While his canonical novel White Noise is themed around the paradoxical link between the pathological fear of dying and consumerism, his latest novel Zero K is about the deferral of death through cryonics. Using the analytical tools of critical theory, the current paper aims to analyse how the portrayal of death appears in the media saturated and consumer-driven environment in which DeLillo’s characters evolve, and how technology contributes both to fuelling the obsession with dying and to feeding the illusion of immortality. Introduction Often described as “one of the major American novelists now at work” (Bloom 2003:1), praised for his capacity to reproduce the current obsessions of American society, DeLillo offers in his novels uncanny insights into how technology and the omnipresence of media affect everyday life. Throughout many of his works, televised media frequently represents a background voice or a recurring presence, airing news about violent catastrophes, fuelling the characters’ alienation and obsession with death. The paradoxically central position of death inside consumer society and its persistence in the news and in popular culture represents another theme found throughout DeLillo’s entire oeuvre, intrinsically linked with the omnipresence of media. For example, in White Noise the main characters suffer from a pathological fear of dying, nurtured by ever-present news reports on catastrophes, Libra reconstructs the context in which the iconic death of President Kennedy took place, and Falling Man deals with the collective tragedy of the 9/11 attacks and how its survivors need to deal with its aftermath. -

In the Future, Toward Death: Finance Capitalism and Security in DeLillo’s Cosmopolis Johannes Voelz ABSTRACT This essay aims to come to terms with the cultural appeal of security, which—so this ar- ticle contends—is better understood as a fascination with insecurity. The essay focuses on Don DeLillo’s Cosmopolis in order to show that this novel stages the appeal of (in)security as rest- ing on its promise to offer an alternative to the future-fixation of the risk regime of financial capitalism. In Cosmopolis, financial risk and the contemporary cult of security come together as two thematic axes. The future-mindedness of financial risk management is counteracted by the threat constructions that drive the concern with security and that emphasize finitude and mortality. The preoccupation with security enables a turn to existential matters that the virtual abstractions of finance have seemingly made inaccessible. While proposing an opposition be- tween a logic of risk based on virtuality and a logic of security based on authenticity, DeLillo’s novel also suggests that it is impossible to break out of the logic of risk management pervading late modernity. The appeal of security articulated in this novel rather lies in the promise to ex- istentially revitalize life within the confines of financialized capitalism. Don DeLillo may justly be considered America’s foremost novelist of terror- ism. From his earliest works, like Players (1977) and The Names (1982), to his magisterial Libra (1989) and Mao II (1991), down to his 9/11-novel Falling Man (2007), the figure of the terrorist has ambiguously embodied both the culmina- tion of a postmodern culture controlled by media representations and the violent kernel of the real that breaks with the primacy of the sign. -

“WHERE EVERYTHING CONVERGES TO A POINT”: CONSPIRACY AS NARRATIVE MODEL IN DON DELILLO’S FICTION1 Paula Martín Salván Universidad de Córdoba This article examines the role played by conspiracy in Don DeLillo’s fiction. As the author of novels in which plots are often central thematic elements, he has been frequently associated to this term in academic writing. My aim is to go beyond the usual political and sociological readings of conspiracy in his work in order to offer a rhetorical and narratological interpretation. I will claim that conspiracy can work as a principle of organization in his novels, determining narrative structures and reading strategies. I will analyze the figurative language associated to conspiracy and the ways in which it can be said to shape the narrative structure of many of DeLillo’s novels. Finally, the ethical implications of this kind of narrative will be briefly addressed, following the idea that conspiracy in fiction can offer relief to the anxiety and uncertainty provoked by particular historical events.
