Few Words About Dohar Few words about Dohar For the first time in Kolkata, a group of young energetic people came together to present the ‘songs of the soil’ of Bengal and the North-East in 1999. That was the beginning of DOHAR. DOHAR the Bengali word, which means Chorus, following a solo lead voice, is a manifestation of the basic spirit with which this singing group was formed. Our mission is to cater the rustic songs of the soil to the urban and rural mass in its original form and flavour. We are thus the chorus of those illustrious bauls and fakirs of greater Bengal and northeast. We are also involved in an endeavour to form an archive of this treasure chest of tunes and philosophy. DOHAR is a group of folk musicians of international repute – a platform for cultural personalities, who consider this world as a musical bonanza and intends to energise it’s inhabitants with the melodious power of folk tunes, specially of greater Bengal as well as the North Eastern States of the Country. In brief, DOHAR is an endless journey of music having strong connections with the root, on one hand and going beyond all boundaries, on the other. DOHAR demonstrates, represents, produces and works on 30-35 folk forms specially from North eastern part of India, West Bengal & Bangladesh and use to play more than 25 different kind of etnic/folk instruments of India. The genres of folk song DOHAR used to perform : Baul (the devine songs of a Community called Baul in Bengal), Bhatiyali (songs, specially related to river of East Bengal), Bhawaiya (the basic melody of North Bengal), Chatka (the faster form of bhawaiya), Jhumur (the basic melody of some part of South Bengal which also use to sung among the tea garden`s labours of Assam and North-Bengal), Saarigaan(songs of boat racing, harvesting etc) Jaari gaan (songs in the memory of kaarvala, sung in muharram month of muslim calendar), Gaajan/Charak(songs of a carnival of Shiva in the last day of bengali year), Dhamail-geet (songs of different festival), Patriotic folk songs, Bihu-Kamrupi(the songs of Assam),etc. In the presentations, DOHAR tries to capture the rustic milieu in a few sketches which are not at all naturalistic but only an aid to stir the audiences’ imagination. DOHAR also present Tagore songs accompanied with various ethnic folk instruments like DUBKI, DOTARA, BANJO, FLUTE, SHINGA, MANDIRA, KASHI, KORTAL, HARMONIUM, SARINDA, DHAK, MRIDANGO, DHOLOK, GANGIRA, MADOL, PAKHOAJ AND OTHER DRUMS & PERCUSSIONS More than 25 ethnic/folk instruments DOHAR used to play, like : STRINGS : EKTARA, DOTARA, SARAJ, ANANDA LAHARI. BOWING & BLOWING : BAMBOO FLUTE, SHINGA, HARMONIUM, SANDIRA, SANKHA ETC. DRUMS & PERCUSSIONS : DHAK, MRIDANGO, DHOLOK, GANJIRA, MADOL, SRIKHOL, DHAMSHA, BAULA DHOL, PAKHAJ, TABLA, GOPI JANTRO, DUBKI, KASHI, KORTAL, GHUNGUR, KATH KARTAL. High Technology Letters ISSN NO : 1006-6748 The Forgotten Saga of Rangpur’s Ahoms - An Ethnographic Approach Barnali Chetia, PhD, Assistant Professor, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Vadodara, India. Department of Linguistics Abstract- Mong Dun Shun Kham, which in Assamese means xunor-xophura (casket of gold), was the name given to the Ahom kingdom by its people, the Ahoms. The advent of the Ahoms in Assam was an event of great significance for Indian history. They were an offshoot of the great Tai (Thai) or Shan race, which spreads from the eastward borders of Assam to the extreme interiors of China. Slowly they brought the whole valley under their rule. Even the Mughals were defeated and their ambitions of eastward extensions were nipped in the bud. Rangpur, currently known as Sivasagar, was that capital of the Ahom Kingdom which witnessed the most glorious period of its regime. Rangpur or present day sivasagar has many remnants from Ahom Kingdom, which ruled the state closely for six centuries. An ethnographic approach has been attempted to trace the history of indigenous culture and traditions of Rangpur's Ahoms through its remnants in the form of language, rites and rituals, religion, archaeology, and sacred sagas. Key Words- Rangpur, Ahoms, Culture, Traditions, Ethnography, Language, Indigenous I. Introduction “Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare, the lone and level sands stretch far away.” -P.B Shelley Rangpur or present day Sivasagar was one of the most prominent capitals of the Ahom Kingdom.

  • The KNIGHT REVISION of HORNBOSTEL-SACHS: a New Look at Musical Instrument Classification
The KNIGHT REVISION of HORNBOSTEL-SACHS: a new look at musical instrument classification by Roderic C. Knight, Professor of Ethnomusicology Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, © 2015, Rev. 2017 Introduction The year 2015 marks the beginning of the second century for Hornbostel-Sachs, the venerable classification system for musical instruments, created by Erich M. von Hornbostel and Curt Sachs as Systematik der Musikinstrumente in 1914. In addition to pursuing their own interest in the subject, the authors were answering a need for museum scientists and musicologists to accurately identify musical instruments that were being brought to museums from around the globe. As a guiding principle for their classification, they focused on the mechanism by which an instrument sets the air in motion. The idea was not new. The Indian sage Bharata, working nearly 2000 years earlier, in compiling the knowledge of his era on dance, drama and music in the treatise Natyashastra, (ca. 200 C.E.) grouped musical instruments into four great classes, or vadya, based on this very idea: sushira, instruments you blow into; tata, instruments with strings to set the air in motion; avanaddha, instruments with membranes (i.e. drums), and ghana, instruments, usually of metal, that you strike. (This itemization and Bharata’s further discussion of the instruments is in Chapter 28 of the Natyashastra, first translated into English in 1961 by Manomohan Ghosh (Calcutta: The Asiatic Society, v.2). The immediate predecessor of the Systematik was a catalog for a newly-acquired collection at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels. The collection included a large number of instruments from India, and the curator, Victor-Charles Mahillon, familiar with the Indian four-part system, decided to apply it in preparing his catalog, published in 1880 (this is best documented by Nazir Jairazbhoy in Selected Reports in Ethnomusicology – see 1990 in the timeline below).

  • Categorization of Stringed Instruments with Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis
CATEGORIZATION OF STRINGED INSTRUMENTS WITH MULTIFRACTAL DETRENDED FLUCTUATION ANALYSIS Archi Banerjee*, Shankha Sanyal, Tarit Guhathakurata, Ranjan Sengupta and Dipak Ghosh Sir C.V. Raman Centre for Physics and Music Jadavpur University, Kolkata: 700032 *[email protected] * Corresponding Author ABSTRACT Categorization is crucial for content description in archiving of music signals. On many occasions, human brain fails to classify the instruments properly just by listening to their sounds which is evident from the human response data collected during our experiment. Some previous attempts to categorize several musical instruments using various linear analysis methods required a number of parameters to be determined. In this work, we attempted to categorize a number of string instruments according to their mode of playing using latest-state-of-the-art robust non-linear methods. For this, 30 second sound signals of 26 different string instruments from all over the world were analyzed with the help of non linear multifractal analysis (MFDFA) technique. The spectral width obtained from the MFDFA method gives an estimate of the complexity of the signal. From the variation of spectral width, we observed distinct clustering among the string instruments according to their mode of playing. Also there is an indication that similarity in the structural configuration of the instruments is playing a major role in the clustering of their spectral width. The observations and implications are discussed in detail. Keywords: String Instruments, Categorization, Fractal Analysis, MFDFA, Spectral Width INTRODUCTION Classification is one of the processes involved in audio content description. Audio signals can be classified according to miscellaneous criteria viz. speech, music, sound effects (or noises).
