A Multidisciplinary Examination of Fast Bowling Talent Development in Cricket

A MULTIDISCIPLINARY EXAMINATION OF FAST BOWLING TALENT DEVELOPMENT IN CRICKET Elissa Jane Phillips BPhEd & MSc (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Human Movement Studies Faculty of Health Queensland University of Technology 2011 ii Keywords Biomechanics, cricket, dynamical systems theory, degeneracy, expertise, fast bowling, skill acquisition, metastability, multidisciplinary, talent development, variability. iii iv Abstract Research on expertise, talent identification and development has tended to be mono-disciplinary, typically adopting geno-centric or environmentalist positions, with an overriding focus on operational issues. In this thesis, the validity of dualist positions on sport expertise is evaluated. It is argued that, to advance understanding of expertise and talent development, a shift towards a multidisciplinary and integrative science focus is necessary, along with the development of a comprehensive multidisciplinary theoretical rationale. Dynamical systems theory is utilised as a multidisciplinary theoretical rationale for the succession of studies, capturing how multiple interacting constraints can shape the development of expert performers. Phase I of the research examines experiential knowledge of coaches and players on the development of fast bowling talent utilising qualitative research methodology. It provides insights into the developmental histories of expert fast bowlers, as well as coaching philosophies on the constraints of fast bowling expertise. Results suggest talent development programmes should eschew the notion of common optimal performance models and emphasize the individual nature of pathways to expertise. Coaching and talent development programmes should identify the range of interacting constraints that impinge on the performance potential of individual athletes, rather than evaluating current performance on physical tests referenced to group norms.

Women's Cricket, Pioneers and Unsung Heroes

Women’s Cricket, Pioneers and Unsung Heroes The important contribution made to women’s cricket by former students of Dartford College of Physical Education © The Ӧsterberg Collection Jane Claydon 2021 Unsung Heroes A great deal of publicity has been given to women’s cricket in the last decade and yet, some modern authors, in their histories of the game, have not included the names of many talented international cricketers with links to Dartford. Perhaps this is because the authors were not taught by members of staff trained at a Specialist College of Physical Education and are unaware of the heritage of Dartford, Bedford, Chelsea, Dunfermline and other later foundations. As a result, they have missed out on a rich history of women cricketers and administrators. I am sure Mary Duggan would be surprised to find that her lengthy and significant career is not highlighted in one recent publication. I have attempted to redress the balance and introduce the reader to many other players who trained at Dartford College. They may not be household names, but during their careers they influenced the development of the game for women and the outcome of many significant matches. Information about the history of women’s cricket is easy to find. Several books of interest have been published in the last half century. Perhaps, Nancy Joy’s Maiden Over, published in 1950, is overlooked by younger researchers, but it is a source of interesting details about the 1948/49 tour to Australia and New Zealand in which the author participated. The Cricket Archive can provide details of the performance of all England women cricketers, the WCA year books are available to view online and many of the players feature on the pages of Wikipedia.

A lot of students face problems in the General Awareness / Business Awareness / General Knowledge section of MBA entrance exams like XAT, IIFT, and SNAP. That happens because they start "preparing" for it once they are done with their Quant, LR/DI and Verbal prep (sometimes even after CAT) - which is often too late. Ideally, no one should have to prepare for something like General Awareness. But sadly, we don't live in an ideal world. And even those, who try to prepare with the help of websites, news services, etc. suffer from too much information. They cannot filter the relevant information and often give up on GK all-together. It should not be that way. Even if you can devote just 3 hours a week to GK from now on, you will be very well placed when the time comes. It doesn't take much because you don't need a high score to clear the cutoff. The problem is most students are so blissfully unaware about what is going on in the world and clearing the cutoff is not that big a deal. Just do an experiment, next time you are in a group of students preparing for Management Entrance exams, ask them - "Who is the Vice President of India?" You will get what I am talking about. As a first step, you need to know what actually gets asked in the exam and you can find that in the PDF. You will find 6 past year GK papers (with answers) in this PDF. Version : 6.1 They are: IIFT 2012 IIFT 2013 IIFT 2014 IIFT 2015 IIFT 2016 IIFT 2017 And for more, you can have a look at my GK course available here: https://handakafunda.com/gk-general-knowledge-xat-iift-snap If you have any more questions about the course, please send me an email on [email protected] or call me on 09765142632.
