The Rise and Impact of Fact-Checking in U.S. Campaigns by Amanda Wintersieck a Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment O
The Rise and Impact of Fact-Checking in U.S. Campaigns by Amanda Wintersieck A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved April 2015 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Kim Fridkin, Chair Mark Ramirez Patrick Kenney ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2015 ABSTRACT Do fact-checks influence individuals' attitudes and evaluations of political candidates and campaign messages? This dissertation examines the influence of fact- checks on citizens' evaluations of political candidates. Using an original content analysis, I determine who conducts fact-checks of candidates for political office, who is being fact- checked, and how fact-checkers rate political candidates' level of truthfulness. Additionally, I employ three experiments to evaluate the impact of fact-checks source and message cues on voters' evaluations of candidates for political office. i DEDICATION To My Husband, Aza ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I wish to express my sincerest thanks to the many individuals who helped me with this dissertation and throughout my graduate career. First, I would like to thank all the members of my committee, Professors Kim L. Fridkin, Patrick Kenney, and Mark D. Ramirez. I am especially grateful to my mentor and committee chair, Dr. Kim L. Fridkin. Your help and encouragement were invaluable during every stage of this dissertation and my graduate career. I would also like to thank my other committee members and mentors, Patrick Kenney and Mark D. Ramirez. Your academic and professional advice has significantly improved my abilities as a scholar. I am grateful to husband, Aza, for his tireless support and love throughout this project. -

Hold Onto Your Horns: Zynga Launches Running with Friends for Worldwide Audiences
May 9, 2013 Hold Onto Your Horns: Zynga Launches Running With Friends for Worldwide Audiences Players to Show-Off Their Bullish Bravado as They Challenge Opponents in the Newest 'With Friends' Game Available Today Exclusively on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch SAN FRANCISCO, May 9, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Zynga, (Nasdaq:ZNGA), the world's leading provider of social game services, today launched Running With Friends to global audiences on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Running With Friends is a high-speed, 3D action-arcade game and the first truly social endless runner game. Players around the world can now stampede their way through the cobblestone streets of Pamplona, Spain, home to the annual Running of the Bulls Festival, as they try to outmaneuver, outrun, and outscore their friends. As the seventh title in the globally popular 'With Friends' franchise and Zynga's entrant to the runner category, Running With Friends brings a new level of social interaction and fun to the genre. The game includes beloved social elements such as turn- based competition with real-life friends and a chance to bullishly climb the leaderboards by jumping, bumping, and sliding through challenging game-play. Easy to play but tough to master, players compete with friends in three rounds to outrun their opponents by swiping their screen vertically and horizontally to dodge charging bulls and speeding cars, or even ride a bucking bull for bonuses. Players select their own in-game character and can choose to run as a ninja, ballerina, or a zombie. "We are committed to expanding Zynga's mobile portfolio to bring players the most fun, social, and accessible games to play with their friends," said Travis Boatman, Senior Vice President of Mobile at Zynga. -

Both will aim to use home advantage to have a good run here this year – Monfils will look for a repeat of his 2008 performance when he reached the semifinals, while Pouille will hope to emulate the form he displayed in reaching the last 4 at the Australian Open in January to impress the home fans in Paris. • Monte Carlo champion Fabio Fognini takes on fellow Italian Andreas Seppi in the first match on Court Simonne Mathieu today. It will be the 8th all-Italian meeting at Roland Garros in the Open Era and the 16th all-Italian clash at the Grand Slams in the Open Era.
