In closing I would like to leave you with some for thought: How do we make historic preservation relevant in today’s world? For only by making it relevant can we increase our impact on the community and save buildings from demolition.

Can it be through stressing the relevance of saving our built heritage to the larger environmental issues of our time, climate change and sustainability? Both are focused on saving valuable resources for future generations and

he VHF offered six noon time illustrated presentations by leading professionals and project proponents. The sessions focused on current topics concerning the city’s built environment such as UBC Renewal, Shaughnessy Modernism, Robson Square, Unveiling Heather TPavilion at Vancouver Hospital, and the Nichol House Restoration and Townhouse Infill at 16th & Granville.

Map Guides

First published in 2009, the map guides to Chinatown, Japantown and the Carrall Street Greenway proved to be so popular that the first 2,500 copies of each map quickly disappeared through distribution at VHF community events, Tourism Vancouver and the Vancouver Public Library. VHF Launches Public Art Wall at CBC Plaza

he VHF, in partnership with CBC and JJ Bean Coffee Roasters, launched the inaugural exhibit at THE WALL at the newly renovated CBC plaza located on Hamilton Street between Robson and Georgia Streets. The first exhibit was ‘Last Chance’ by Vancouver contemporary artist Eric Deis whose work in large-format photography has been exhibited world-wide.

he beautiful Shaughnessy garden of out-going VHF Board Chair, Mollie Massie and her husband, Hein Poulus, was the setting for the 2010 Hotdogs for Heritage fundraising event. As diehard soccer fans sat in the beer garden watching the World Cup finals, other people combed through fabulous architectural salvage treasures, took part in the archival photo guessing or bid on silent auction items. Delicious barbecued hotdogs and encouragement from a dedicated crew of volunteers kept the crowd enthusiastic despite the hot July day. The Foundation strives to create a culture in the city that respects our local history by reusing and rehabilitating historic structures, and that recognizes the environmental benefit of reusing and Irehabilitating aging buildings. The Vancouver Heritage Foundation is also grateful to the City of Vancouver with whom the Foundation has an operating agreement. The City recognizes the value of the work the Foundation does to create a culture of the reuse and rehabilitation of older buildings in the city. This works retains the historic fabric of the city and saves tons of debris from the wrecking ball. The City contributed 23% of the $477,000 2010 operating budget.

AVancouver Heritage Foundation Endowment Fund A

nder the leadership of Campaign Co-Chairs, Michael Hungerford and Robert Lemon, the Endowment Fund of the Vancouver Heritage Foundation grew significantly during 2008 to 2010. $1.17 million is currently invested for endowment purposes. The interest from the Endowment Fund helps fund the U education, public awareness and granting programs of the Foundation. The goal is to raise a $3 million endowment by the end of 2012. With a $250,000 donation from Colliers International facilitated by the City of Vancouver through the sale of the Robson Street library, the first individual donations to the Endowment Fund came from the Founding Pillars campaign in 2003 – 2004.
