From our Clergy Team This week the Church throughout the world celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday, August 15th. Usually, this feast day is a Holy Day of Obligation. But, because it falls on a Saturday this year, the obligation is removed. While that means you don’t have to go to church on Saturday morning for the feast day, it doesn’t take away from the significance of this day. There are many unique graces that we attribute to our Blessed Mother Mary. These graces are particular gifts God gave to her in order to prepare her to be the mother of His Son. For instance, in December we celebrate the Immaculate Conception of Mary, honoring her as being conceived without the stain of original sin and keeping her free from sin throughout her life. When the Gabriel comes with the message from God asking Mary to be the Mother of God, the angel greets her as “full of grace.” To be full of grace means that there is no room for anything evil, hence, she is free from sin. And while Mary could have said “no” to the request of God because of the gift of free will, her heart is so pure and loving that she says “yes” without hesitation and brings Christ into the world. The celebration of the Assumption is the culmination of our belief in the unstained goodness of the Blessed Mother. To be free from sin throughout her life, to carry the child Jesus in her womb, to witness the public ministry, passion, and death of Jesus, and to have all of the children of God entrusted to her care allows her a share in the fullness of God’s glory in heaven. While we will need to await the resurrection of the body on the last day before we can see God face to face, Mary shared in that privilege from the moment of her death so that she might love us and intercede for us as our heavenly Mother. Consider joining us for Holy Mass in celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption at 8:30 a.m. this Saturday, August 15th at Saint Anthony Chapel so that we can give thanks to God for the wonderful gift of Mary our Mother. May she continue to intercede for us and may we continue to experience the love that pours forth from her Immaculate Heart. RCIA (RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS) The RCIA program is being planned to begin in the Fall and will culminate with the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. The RCIA Program is meant for: Adults who have never been baptized and desire to become a member of the Church; Adults who were baptized in another Christian denomination and desire to become Catholic; Adults who were baptized Catholic but never completed their Sacraments of Initiation (i.e., Confirmation and Eucharist). The RCIA gatherings will be held weekly at a location to be determined and will consist of prayer, teaching, and conversation in a relaxed atmosphere. If you or someone you know is interested in the RCIA Program or in learning more about it, please email me at [email protected] or call one of the parish offices and leave your name and phone number. Don’t be afraid to reach out to someone who you believe is desiring to know and love God more. If you are interested in assisting with the RCIA Program as a catechist or sponsor, or if you would simply like to attend to see what it’s about and learn more about your faith, we’d love to have you join us. Reach out in the same way and let me know. God bless! Fr. Nick
