The Great North Way cycling The Great North Way 32 mile cycle route between Potters Bar & Letchworth via Welwyn, Stevenage and Hertfordshire countryside The Great North Way Hertfordshire has some great countryside to explore... and what’s more you don’t need your car to fi nd it. Get in the saddle and ride the Great North Way! This cycle route takes you from town into countryside using quiet lanes and traffi c free sections. The Great North Way is the latest in a succession of transport routes linking London with northern England & Scotland. Riding the route, you will cross above and below these earlier constructed road and rail links: the medieval Great North Road, The A1 and the East Coast Mainline railway. The Great North Way (Route 12) forms part of the National Cycle Network. Conceived by the charity Sustrans, it is one of many safe cycle routes making up part of an ambitious countrywide network. When completed Route 12 will link London with Grimsby via Peterborough. In Hertfordshire it takes you from Potters Bar (Hadley Wood) to Letchworth and Baldock - a 32 mile ride. You may not want to cycle all of the route, but why not ride part of it? You could even cycle one way and take the train back. See the Bike / Rail section on the back cover for more information. The map also contains information on interesting places to visit along the route, with an emphasis on free and less expensive attractions. Take a diversion down one of three old railway line cycle routes, expand your mind in Mill Green or Letchworth Heritage museums, explore woodlands or take a trip around Letchworth on their recently opened Greenway. Refreshments can be found in the pubs and cafes shown. If you live and work along the route, why not use this map to plan a cycle ride to work? Nearby schools are also shown to help fi nd a safe way of cycling in on school days. It provides a traffic-free connection between Hertford and Welwyn Garden City connecting at both ends to links to the respective town centres and forms part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network Route 61. 1.3 The draft GAP focuses on the section of Cole Green Way between Hertford and the A414 which is owned by HCC and will make recommendations for the management of the remainder of the route. 1.4 A briefing document was produced by CMS in August 2017 as a first stage of engagement on the GAP. The Council’s proposed consultation response was reported to this Panel on 5 October 2017 and following agreement of the Panel was submitted to the CMS on 12 October 2017. 1.5 The CMS has considered the feedback from the consultation on the briefing document and has subsequently prepared a draft Cole Green Way Greenspace Action Plan 2018-2023. This report summarises the draft GAP and sets out the Council’s response to the consultation which was agreed with the Executive Member for Planning, Housing and Community and submitted to HCC by email on Friday 16 March.

    From the Garden City Movement Onwards Utopianism in British Garden Cities Rick William Moerman Department of Human Geography Examiner: Mads Barbesgaard SGEM08 Supervisor: Anders Lund Hansen Spring 2020 2 Abstract With the publication of Garden Cities of To-Morrow in 1898, Ebenezer Howard gave the go-ahead to the Garden City Movement. Howard’s concept of the garden city arose from his anti-capitalist critiques. Many industrial cities in the United Kingdom were facing urbanization problems, leading to the working class living in terrible circumstances in the suburban areas. This process caused a poor quality of life, housing shortages, polluted air and water and a lack of access to nature. At the same time, the countryside lacked career opportunities and a lack of (cultural) amusement. Howard proposed the garden city as a new alternative to both ways of living. A garden city would have a green character and a blooming cultural life. Surrounding greenbelts and enough job opportunities would make the city self-sustainable. The reactions to Howard’s utopian ideas were mainly positive, leading to the construction of two garden cities in the United Kingdom. Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City were located close to London and offered a way of living as proposed by Howard. These projects were considered successful, leading to the establishment of the related New Town Movement. This movement eventually led to the creation of 28 new and self-sustaining towns all over the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, the two original garden cities had developed into rich commuter towns which had become too expansive for the working class population.

Members of the public and other interested parties were invited to comment upon the latest proposed changes to the Plan and a number of supporting documents. The consultation followed the further hearing public sessions held by the Inspector between November 2020 and February 2021. The Council received approximately 670 responses to the consultation. These contained approximately 1,500 distinct representations on the documents and detailed proposed changes that were consulted upon. The Inspector has now given the go-ahead for the responses to be made public.
