Welcome to Brazil

The Department of Physical Education at UNESP-Rio Claro would like to thank you for the opportunity to organize the 16th International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity (ISAPA). First of all, we welcome you to Brazil, one of the world’s most beautiful and fascinating countries. We’re the largest country in Latin America, and the fifth largest in the world. Our population is also big: 170 million people, the sixth largest in the world. Almost all Brazilians speak Portuguese. We are famous for our Carnaval, and, of course, soccer. We have rainforests, deserts, mountain ranges, and several thousand miles of Atlantic coastline. Our natural resources are unsurpassed by almost any other place on earth.

Despite its paradoxes, Brazil is a modern and advanced country. We still struggle with hunger and illiteracy, but we also are considered the “silo of the world,” have one of the fastest growing Internet systems, as well as a rapidly growing middle- class. We have a history of pacific relations with all nations, and we are a gateway to other South American countries, setting trends and sharing and exchanging our popular and academic cultures. Our interracial blend creates a mystic, diverse, and complex population with no clear boundaries, but with a mosaic of ethnic cultures. We are a land of friendly people with diverse cultures and stark contrasts. Here you’ll find skyscrapers and mud huts, heart surgeons and faith healers, and forest people and Gap-dressed technophiles. You’ll also find a group of dedicated pioneer researchers and professionals in the field of physical education, with many affiliations in related areas. Here at UNESP in Rio Claro, we have outstanding scholars, unique pedagogical methods, and many occasions to apply creative solutions to many social and individual conditions (e.g., poverty, violence, disability conditions, risk to development, health impairment, etc.). There is much work to be done, and many ideas and projects to implement. An international symposium presents an opportunity for

Claudine Sherrill University. This was the beginning of the hippie era and offered a lot of adventure. Dr Claudine Sherrill, President of the International Federation In 1961 began her lifetime commitment to Texas Woman’s of Adapted Physical Activity (IFAPA) since 2003, and IFAPA University (now coeducational, but women remain the Board Member since 1989, finishes her 4-year term as majority), when she joined the faculty and taught President on the last day of this Symposium in Rio Claro, so biomechanics, APE methods, elementary school PE teaching the Brazil IFAPA is a very special time for her. Her methods, and later (for 30 years or so) all of the methods of participation in a conference here 2 years ago, the fantastic research in the Department. Claudine is most proud of trip to beautiful Paraty afterward, and working with the Brazil starting the APE specialization at Texas Woman’s University organizers on this Symposium has made Brazil a rich and in 1972, of TWU students, and of her 700-page textbook first wonderful experience to be remembered forever. published in 1976. Entitled Adapted Physical Activity, Dr Sherrill, age 73 (and proud of it), is Professor-Emeritus Recreation, and Sport: Crossdisciplinary and Lifespan, the of Texas Woman’s University (TWU) in Denton, a city of 7th edition will soon be published. Claudine doesn’t believe about 100,000 near Dallas in northern Texas; Editor Emeritus in retirement. She still has hundreds of goals and a passion of Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly, the official research for life, diversity, social justice, and adventure. journal of IFAPA, and remains active on its Editorial Board; Issues Editor for an APA journal named Palaestra, after the E-mail: [email protected] ancient Greek forum where athletes dialogued; and an officer of many organizations. Claudine has been a member of the American Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) since her undergraduate years at Texas Woman’s University; a member of the Council for Special Education (CEC) since the 1970s, and active in several disability sport associations. One of her strongest beliefs is that educators should support the organizations that promote their specializations and professional goals. Claudine’s newest interest is the aging, especially the frail elderly in assisted living facilities, because her mother (age 93, still walking, still striving for a personal best) is one of these precious persons. Claudine volunteers 3 afternoons a week to engage her mother and others in fun-oriented APA and plans to write a book for caregivers. She is particularly concerned about the discrimination of society toward the aging and other powerless, and general poor people. Much of her research has focused on prejudice, social injustice, inclusion, and changing attitudes and behaviors through sport, dance, and aquatics. Claudine has always loved teaching, especially the students who offer challenges. This, added to severe asthma as a child, are perhaps what attracted her to APA. In undergraduate days, Claudine’s favorite activities were playing field hockey, leading a Girl Scout troop that loved overnight camping, and teaching swimming to children with disabilities. Her initial fulltime employment was at the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras for 2 years, during which she learned a lot about cultural and linguistic diversity, spent her weekends life-guarding for the year-round Girl Scout camp, and developed a lifetime love for Spanish people and their diverse cultures. Claudine then spent 3 years at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City, earning both master’s and doctoral degrees while teaching physical education fulltime in the public schools. Next was 2 years (1959-1961) of teaching at San Francisco State

Yeshayahu (Shayke) Hutzler

Yeshayahu Hutzler, or better known by his nickname, Shayke, was born in Tel-Aviv, Israel, to German-speaking parents. In 1986 he completed his Ph.D. research on movement actions of wheelchair users at the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences of the Heidelberg University, Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Herman Rieder. In his dissertation, which was the basis for several publications, Shayke established his belief in empowerment and the ecological context as central constructs of adapted physical activity (APA). From his very early scientific and practical activities in APA, he dedicated himself to the reciprocal relationships of the participant and the scientist/practitioner, and many of his studies developed from this practice- oriented perspective. Since 1987, he has been a staff member (tenured in 1989) of the Zinman College for Physical Education and Sport Sciences at the Wingate Institute, (IFAPA) since the early 1990s, and since 1999 he has held Israel, teaching courses on motor development, motor the position of Secretary of the Executive Board. Herman Van Coppenolle

Since 1971, Dr. Herman Van Coppenolle has been a professor at the Faculty of Physical Education and Physiotherapy, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. Here, he has been active in three different domains. First, as a former Belgian record-holder in the 200-meter sprint (21.3 seconds), Prof. Van Coppenolle was a professor in track and field and coaching. He later became a coach for famous athletes such as Fons Brydenbach, who was a world record-holder for the 400-meter indoor, as well as placing fourth in the finals at the Olympic Games in Montreal. Herman also developed a new form of psychotherapy through movement activities for psychiatric patients, called psychomotor therapy. As its founding father in Belgium, Herman trained more than 600 students who specialized in this field after obtaining a Master’s diploma in physical education, sport science, or physiotherapy. His research and of students in adapted physical activity with regard to the internationally-awarded movies (about psychomotor therapy integration of persons with disabilities at school and in for depressive and anorexia nervosa patients) expanded the society. This occurred through the European Thematic approach to international dimensions. A major contribution Networks (THENAPA I and THENAPA II), in which all was his creation of a psychomotor observation method, “The countries were involved. This is even truer for persons with a disability and for older persons. Prof. Van Coppenolle has, throughout his life, practiced sports at the top level (track and field), or, later, at a more recreative level (football, basketball, tennis, skiing, general fitness, distance running, swimming, cycling, volleyball, and motor biking). Actually, he continues all of these activities himself at an older age in part to convince everyone about how staying active can enhance the quality of life for older persons.

ISAPA 2007. ISAPA Brazil was conceptualized during the ISAPA Miami, in1991, by her Brazilian colleagues, who, with her, founded the Brazilian Society of Adapted Motor Activity (Sobama) in 1994. (It was at that time that Dr. Claudine Sherrill planted the seeds of this mission.) Since 1987, Dr. Mauerberg-deCastro has offered university outreach programs to the surrounding community of individuals with disabilities. Her well-known program in adapted physical activity, PROEFA, has benefited hundreds of graduate and undergraduate students, collaborators, participants with disabilities, participants without disabilities working as tutors, and family members. Dr. Mauerberg-deCastro’s interests include web development, graphic design, journal publishing, photography, and painting (naïve style). Her ongoing goals are to contribute to the development of students, teachers, researchers, professors, thinkers, critics, and friends; to learn from them; and to enjoy the process. She believes that the true legacy of a scholar is more than publishing articles and books. It is being a mentor: one who influences lives, who is politically active, and who advocates against discrimination and oppression. She believes that inspiring her students— through example—to be educators, mentors of the next generation, is her true mission.
