First of all, we welcome you to Brazil, one of the world’s most beautiful and fascinating countries. We’re the largest country in Latin America, and the fifth largest in the world. Our population is also big: 170 million people, the sixth largest in the world. Almost all Brazilians speak Portuguese. We are famous for our Carnaval, and, of course, soccer. We have rainforests, deserts, mountain ranges, and several thousand miles of Atlantic coastline. Our natural resources are unsurpassed by almost any other place on earth. Despite its paradoxes, Brazil is a modern and advanced country. We still struggle with hunger and illiteracy, but we also are considered the “silo of the world,” have one of the fastest growing Internet systems, as well as a rapidly growing middle- class. We have a history of pacific relations with all nations, and we are a gateway to other South American countries, setting trends and sharing and exchanging our popular and academic cultures. Our interracial blend creates a mystic, diverse, and complex population with no clear boundaries, but with a mosaic of ethnic cultures. We are a land of friendly people with diverse cultures and stark contrasts. Here you’ll find skyscrapers and mud huts, heart surgeons and faith healers, and forest people and Gap-dressed technophiles. You’ll also find a group of dedicated pioneer researchers and professionals in the field of physical education, with many affiliations in related areas. Here at UNESP in Rio Claro, we have outstanding scholars, unique pedagogical methods, and many occasions to apply creative solutions to many social and individual conditions (e.g., poverty, violence, disability conditions, risk to development, health impairment, etc.). There is much work to be done, and many ideas and projects to implement. An international symposium presents an opportunity for ISAPA 2007 - Program 1 Introduction scholars from our institution and from many parts of the AREX - Assessoria de Relações Externas world to give visibility to international issues and cultural Alameda Santos, 647 - 12º andar diversity. Fédération Internationale de l'Activité Physique Adaptée International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity Volume 19, Number 3 July, 2011 NENEWWSSLETTELETTERR www.ifapa.biz President’s Message Dear Colleagues, It is a great honor and a real pleasure to write this first President’s message. I joined IFAPA in 1999. Since then I have been implicated in the life of IFAPA as the European Representative, then Vice-President and President Elect since ISAPA 2009 in Gävle. Shayke Hutzler gave me the “hammer,” symbol of the Presidency, during the closing ceremony of ISAPA 2011 in Paris. I wish to thank all Past-Presidents who shared with me their passion, their ideas and perspectives, and gave me their entire support. They will continue to be involved with the board of IFAPA as mentors, advisers in the scope of the Past President Council Claire Boursier implemented during ISAPA 2011. My wish as President of IFAPA is to develop our federation in all regions of the world, especially in Africa and South America. The role of the regional representatives will be crucial on this regard as well as the student representative. To help them, one of the Vice-Presidents will be in charge of the develop- ment, and in all regions a student will be nominated to second the regional representatives and the IFAPA board students’ representative. I wish to welcome all new board members and thank all the ones whose turn finished. Another main challenge to develop IFAPA is linked to language. Translating the main issues (newsletters, articles, proceedings of ISAPAs, etc.) in diverse languages will be a priority.

2 Inhaltsverzeichnis 1. • Afghanistan Will Make Their Debut at the IPC Athletics World Championships
Afghanistan will make their debut at the IPC Athletics World Championships. Afghanistan has yet to win a medal in athletics at the Paralympic Games. Mareena Karim came 15th in women's 100m T46 at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games. Algeria has won 32 gold medals at the IPC Athletics World Championships, ranking it the second-most successful NPC from Africa. Only South Africa (46) has won more gold medals. At the 2013 World Championships in Lyon, Algeria set a new national record by winning 10 gold medals. Their previous best was eight in Christchurch in 2011. Algeria has improved its total medal haul at every edition of the World Championships: one in Berlin (1994), seven in Birmingham (1998), nine in Lille (2002), 15 in Assen (2006), 21 in Christchurch (2011) and a record 23 in Lyon (2013). In 2013, Algeria won all their 10 gold medals in running (four) or throwing/shot put events (six). Four athletes share the Algerian record of four gold medals: runner Samir Nouioua, sprinter Mohamed Allek and Karim Bettina and Lahouari Bahlaz in throwing events. Samir Nouioua has won most total medals for Algeria at the World Championships, having also claimed three silver medals alongside his four gold medals. Sofia Djelal is the only Algerian athlete to have won the same event three times, winning the gold medal in javelin throw F57/58 in 2002, 2006 and 2013. Year 1994 1998 2002 2006 2011 2013 Total .
