– 1945. KLJUČNE RIJEČI: Apostolska administratura za sjevernu Slavoniju i Baranju, crkveno- državni odnosi, Đakovačka biskupija, Pečuška biskupija, Sveta Stolica, Jugoslavija, Nezavisna Država Hrvatska, Mađarska, Antun Akšamović, Stjepan Bäuerlein 7 SUMMARY The aim of this work is to analyze the church administration position of northern Slavonia and south Baranya from the end of World War I until the area's integration into the structure of the Diocese of Đakovo or Bosnia and Syrmia. This also implies an analysis of the role and meaning of the Apostolic administration of northern Slavonia and Baranya as a church administrative unit that has been founded in that area in 1923. The introduction therefore provides and overview of previous research of Apostolic administration of northern Slavonia and Baranya, followed by establishing the theoretical and methodological research sources. The introduction is continued by a brief referencing of earlier initiatives to address the issues of church administration over northern Slavonia, as well as an analysis of international circumstances that have caused the formation of the Apostolic administration of northern Slavonia and Baranya. The focus is put on the Treaty of Trianon which divided Baranya between the Kingdom of Hungary and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. It ends with a description of Baranya's position within the Kingdom of SCS / Kingdom of Yugoslavia as the newly-emergent state and entity. The whole work is based on the combination of the synchronic and the diachronic principle. The central part of the work consists of three chapters chronologically connected by crucial decisions related to the territorial organization of church administration in northern and Slavonia and southern Baranya. Each chapter consists of a series of thematic subsections, one of which includes a review of international political developments that affected the church-state relations, while few of the chapters provide a statistical overview of data from relevant sources, such as diocesan schematics and canonical visitations. Also, each chapter provides several subsections concerning the timeline of the church-state relations at the aforementioned apostolic administrations' micro level. Some subsections show some other specific factors in the domain of church-state relations, which have significantly influenced both church and state policies. The first chapter begins with the emergence of the Apostolic administration of northern Slavonia and Baranya in 1923 and ends with its division into the Apostolic administration of northern Slavonia under the authority of bishop of Đakovo and the Apostolic administration of southern Baranya under the authority of bishop of Pécs in 1941. The second chapter encompasses the shortest period, which often coincides with the existence of the Independent State of Croatia 1941 – 1945. 8 The third chapter refers to the longest period. It covers the period from the end of World War II to the annexation

Chapter 5 The Strategic Emphases of Scientific-Research Work with the Main Topics, Aims, and Expected Outcome of Scientific Research Zagreb, September, 2015. 5. The Strategic Emphases of Scientific-Research Work with the Main Topics, Aims, and Expected Outcome of Scientific Research On the basis of the vision and mission of the Catholic Faculty of Theology of the University of Zagreb, the structure of employees in scientific-teaching and associate grades, scientific productivity from 2009 until 2014, defended licentiate and doctoral theses from 2009 until 2014, the SWOT analysis, and taking into consideration the whole activity of the Faculty, in the continuation the strategic areas of scientific research are going to be specified. Within these, strategic topics with the description of main aims, contents, and expected results of scientific research will be defined. 1st Strategic Area: Contemporary Perspectives of the Relation between Philosophy and Theology The Title of the Topic (1): Contemporary Philosophy and Religion The Aim and Contents of Research: It is not entirely known when the systematic philosophical reflection on religion began, but it is certain that it has been present since the very beginning of philosophy. From Greek and Medieval philosophy to Modern philosophy and especially Kant’s criticism, religion has been not only a legitimate but also an unavoidable topic of philosophy. The same is true for contemporary philosophy of either “continental” or “analytical” tradition. In that sense, the intention of this research is to determine how individual “schools” of contemporary philosophy understand religion.

  • The Dissonant Heritage of the Blessed Alojzije Stepinac: the Case of the Silencing of a Religious Tourist Route
Belaj The Dissonant Heritage of the Blessed Alojzije Stepinac: The Case of the Silencing of a Religious Tourist Route Marijana Belaj University of Zagreb Croatia Abstract A religious tourist route, the Stepinac Path (Croatia), is a project designed to connect four mnemonic sites related to selected parts of the Blessed Alojzije Stepinac’s biography. The proj- ect follows the European model of the Camino de Santiago. The Stepinac Path includes the reconstruction of several old pilgrimage paths leading to the national pilgrimage shrine of Our Lady in Marija Bistrica. It was also conceived to be incorporated into a wider network of Croatian and international Marian pilgrimage paths. The project was created and is managed by various tourism institutions, with the aim of heritagizing the figure of Alojzije Stepinac by highlighting several aspects of his life. However, the phrase “the heritage of the Blessed Alojzije Stepinac” is mostly promoted by the Catholic Church in Croatia, emphasizing the religious aspect of his legacy. The complex power relations between religious and heritage politics have pushed the Stepinac Path project’s implementation into a silent phase. Without the proper sup- port of the Catholic Church in Croatia, the project has little public recognition and momentum has slowed. This paper examines the Stepinac Path’s silencing in terms of dissonant heritage policies and heritagization processes in political, religious, and economic discourses and power relations. Keywords: dissonant heritage; heritagization; the Blessed Alojzije Stepinac; the Stepinac Path Introduction religious tourist route, the Stepinac Path, is a project in northwest Croatia de- signed to revive old pilgrimage routes and to connect places that preserve the Blessed Alojzije Stepinac’s memory.

The Complete Works of Evelyn Waugh. Edited by John Howard Wilson and Barbara Cooke. Reviewed by Jeffrey Manley NEWS Evelyn Waugh Studies 2 Evelyn Waugh’s Yugoslav Mission: Politics and Religion Milena Borden In Evelyn Waugh’s only government Report, “Church and State in Liberated Croatia” (30 March, 1945), the novelist presented documentary evidence for his concerns about the alliance of Britain with the Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito during the Second World War, recording the killing of 17 Catholic priests as human rights violations. In 2016, the National Archives of Croatia and the Institute for Croatian History in Zagreb confirmed, for the purpose of this article, the identities of these individuals. Their full details and what is known about their fates, as reported by these official bodies, are published here, in Appendices 1 and 2, for the first time. The article argues that Waugh’s views in his Report reflected his moral, religious beliefs and that they were vindicated by the post-Cold War history of Yugoslavia and Europe. In seeking to explain an understanding of Waugh’s political outlook, it discusses why and how he went beyond the aim of his military mission. The background research uses Waugh’s diaries, letters, political, polemical writings and biographies of him.

  • Baroque Art in Croatia and the Vienna School of Art History
Baroque Art in Croatia and the Vienna School of Art History Dubravka Botica Introduction The history of studying Baroque art reflects the development of art history in Croatia. The art of the Baroque period was not in the foreground at the early stages of the field’s development, nor was it a topical issue later on, such as contemporary or medieval art. The questions on Baroque did not lead to politically charged discussions, such as art and art criticism of the 1950s or the question of national identity in medieval art of the Adriatic coast. The study of Baroque art in Croatia was heavily influenced by the Vienna School of Art History, its most prominent protagonists and research topics, and this influence was present throughout the entire twentieth century. It can be compared to the issue of cultural heritage conservation, which evolved in Croatia under the direct influence of the Vienna School and Vienna as a political centre, not only by adopting ideas but also by establishing institutions responsible for the protection of cultural heritage during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The paper briefly discusses some aspects of work and methods of Wiener Schule der Kunstgeschichte (‘Vienna School of Art History’) that have had an impact on Croatian art history.1 It gives a short overview of the beginnings of art history in Croatia with Ivan Kukuljević Sakcinski and Iso Kršnjavi, as well as the most important occurrences that shaped the field’s development and cultural sphere at the end of the nineteenth century, with the aim of explaining the great upturn in researching and appraising Baroque art at the beginning of the twentieth century brought about by Gjuro Szabo, who adopted the ideas and theses of Vienna School, especially those of Alois Riegl.

• The Most Catholic Country in Europe? Church, State, and Society in Contemporary Croatia
Religion, State & Society, Vol. 34, No. 4, December 2006 The Most Catholic Country in Europe? Church, State, and Society in Contemporary Croatia VJEKOSLAV PERICA1 Croatia is today the most Catholic country in Europe. The voice of the church is being heard well; the church is able to influence the legal order. ...I do not know of any other country in which society and government pay such attention to what the church has to say, especially about social issues (Jutarnji, 2004). These were the words of the papal nuncio in Croatia, Archbishop Francisco-Javier Lozano, in an interview with Radio Vatican on 27 July 2004. In a follow-up polemic the ruling Catholic party, the Croatian Democratic Community (Hrvatska Demokratska zajednica (HDZ)), sounded triumphant. The HDZ returned to power after a 2003 electoral victory assisted by the church. One of HDZ party leaders, Andrija Hebrang, was glad to hear the nuncio’s words but said modestly ‘Poland and Ireland remain grand champions of Catholicism; they are probably more Catholic than Croatia’ (Novi list, 2004a). Several critical voices, however, dissented from the triumphant mood on the Croatian Catholic right. The writer Drago Pilsel, a former Franciscan liberation theologian born in Argentina, attacked Lozano in his column in the Rijeka daily Novi list. According to Pilsel, Lozano, as a member of the ultraconservative organisation Opus Dei, favours a country in which the Catholic Church acts as patron to state and society. Pilsel describes Lozano as a hawk from the most conservative church circles, and accuses him of hating the poor, the working people and especially Africa (Pilsel, 2004).
