Queer Performance in the Post-Millennial Scramble
QUEER PERFORMANCE IN THE POST-MILLENNIAL SCRAMBLE MOYNAN KING A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN THEATRE AND PERFORMANCE STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO November 2019 © Moynan King, 2019 ii Abstract The subject of this dissertation is contemporary queer feminist performance in Canada. My practice-informed research takes a unique approach to studying performance through what I call the “queer performance scramble”—a term that draws on the multiple meanings of “scramble” to understand the aesthetics of queer performance and its challenges to stable conceptions of both identity and temporality. I investigate works that are happening now and that scramble the sticky elements of their own cultural constructions and queer temporalities. The temporal turn in queer theory supports my engagement with the effects of temporality, performativity, and history on queer performance, and, conversely, the effects of queer performance on time. I am equally interested in the formal and material dimensions of the work I study. I look to the content, style, material conditions, and social scenes of queer feminist performance from the perspective of both an academic and an artist to make accessible work that is often marginalized within Canadian cultural production ecology. Chapter 1 investigates queer feminist hauntings with an analysis of Allyson Mitchell and Deirdre Logue’s Killjoy’s Kastle: A Lesbian Feminist Haunted House. Chapter 2 argues that cabaret is the primary site for queer feminist performance in Canada, and when framed as a methodological problem/solution matrix, both the celebratory and limiting potential of the form can be explored. -

As complex institutions, affective labour underpins the work of prograMMers and festivaL staff. As public events, fiLMs screened at festivaLs can be weLL- received pictures, poorly-reviewed flops, or events met with protest, controversy, and outbursts of public eMotion. The reLationship between these different types of eMotion, affect, and feeLing is a complex yet an often-overlooked aspect of fiLM festivaLs. This dissertation deveLops a theory of affect through the history of the queer and feMinist fiLM festivaLs on the Canadian Prairies from 1985 to 2005. Drawing on the vast colLection of public and private archives avaiLable on these festivaLs, as weLL as interviews and ethnography, I attend to the ways the region’s network of fiLM festivaLs have produced and have been produced by affect and how affects of dis/interest, disgust, shaMe, and happiness circulate within fiLM festivaL networks. The circulation and production of different affects at various points in these festivaL histories have had profound effects on how these festivaLs organize—from how organizers reLate to each other and to their publics, to the kinds of funding they accept and the politics of their prograMMing. -

Jonathan Petrychyn Queering New Cinema History: Affective Methodologies for Comparative Histories Abstract New Cinema History has tended to focus on developing microhistories of the exhibition, distribution, and reception of theatrical Hollywood and other mainstream cinemas. While such scholarship has been essential for understanding how cinema operates as a sociocultural institution, its focus on the highly public forms of cinemagoing that often followed Hollywood film has left untouched the sometimes furtive and deliberately hidden cinemagoing practices and microhistories of queer audiences, curators, and exhibitors throughout the mid-to-late 20th century. This paper intervenes in this state of affairs and queers New Cinema History. I situate film festival studies and New Cinema History within the same methodological and theoretical terrain and argue that the exclusion of queer film festivals from New Cinema History is a result of both the field’s methodological preference for big data, as well as a structural heteronormativity underlying its methodologies. I further argue that by following affect, ephemera, and anecdotes, New Cinema History can better account for queer and other marginalised cinema practices. New Cinema History, as this special issue notes, has tended to focus on micro-histories of cinema exhibition, reception, and distribution, and often with a focus on theatrical Hollywood and other mainstream and national cinemas. -

Sanja Kajinić CEU eTD Collection ii ABSTRACT In this project, I study the processes of negotiation of meanings of queerness in art works, visuality and space of post-Yugoslav queer festivals. The thesis researches how LGBT/queer art festivals (and in particular the Queer Zagreb Festival in Croatia) used queer visuality in the post-Yugoslav region from 2003 till 2012. This research engages with discussions in the fields of feminist visual studies, cultural studies, queer theory, festival studies, and (queer) anthropology to ask about the influence of visual representation on social changes. -
