Abschließend möchte ich auch meinem Cousin Alexander Winkler, MSc. meinen Dank aussprechen, der mir mit seinem Knowhow und seinen sprachlichen Kompetenzen immer mit Rat und Tat zur Seite stand. i Vorwort Es fällt sicher nicht schwer, sich in eine Diplomandin hineinzuversetzen und den Gedanken nachzuvollziehen, dass für die Diplomarbeit auf jeden Fall ein Thema gewählt werden soll, das Spaß und Freude an der Arbeit bereitet. Auf mich traf dies vor allem deshalb so stark zu, da ich bereits früher eine Seminararbeit zu einem sehr ernsten Thema schrieb, das zwar äußerst interessant war, sich jedoch während der gesamten Zeit, in der ich mich damit befasste und auch danach stark auf meinen Gemütszustand niederschlug. Bereits damals stand für mich somit fest, dass nur ein lustiges Thema in Frage kommen würde. Dank einiger Übersetzungsmodule während meines letzten Studienabschnittes, die das Thema Untertitelung zum Inhalt hatten und eines Seminares mit dem Titel Multimodalität und Übersetzen, reifte langsam die Idee zu einer Untertitelungsanalyse und da ich mir in meiner Freizeit abends gerne lustige Filme und Serien ansehe, war auch hier relativ rasch klar, dass es eine Sitcom sein sollte. Warum jedoch die Wahl ausgerechnet auf The Big Bang Theory fiel, wird später in Kapitel 3.2.1. genauer erklärt. Das Thema stand also grob betrachtet fest, allerdings fehlte noch der zu untersuchende Aspekt. Anfangs gingen die Ideen in Richtung eines Untertitelungsvergleiches zwischen Fansubs und den auf DVD veröffentlichten Untertiteln, diese entwickelten sich im Laufe der Konzepterstellung jedoch schnell in eine völlig andere Richtung. Denn aufgrund der Tatsache, dass nur die ersten drei Staffeln von The Big Bang Theory auf DVD deutschsprachige Untertitel enthalten, die jedoch für die zur Analyse ausgewählte Staffel vier nur deutsche Untertitel für Hörgeschädigte aufweist, kam mir die Idee, eben diese in Bezug auf Humor zu analysieren und die Fansubs gänzlich außer Acht zu lassen. Der Gedanke dabei war herauszufinden, in wie weit das Verständnis von Humor bei der Untertitelung für Hörgeschädigte gewährleistet wird. Denn bereits Aristoteles war der Meinung, dass Humor eine menschliche Eigenschaft ist, die uns von den Tieren unterscheidet und die jeder einzelne von uns besitzt. Als lebenslustiger Mensch, dem Humor sehr wichtig ist, bin ich der Überzeugung, dass dieser niemandem vorenthalten werden sollte. Denkt man nun an die, die mit einer Hörschädigung oder gehörlos durchs Leben gehen, so stellt man sich natürlich die Frage, ob der Zugang zu Humor und Komik in gleichem Maße ermöglicht wird, wie hörenden Personen. Gerade in einer schnelllebigen Zeit wie heute, die von einem ii permanenten Wandel gekennzeichnet ist und deren Gesellschaft stark von digitalen Medien beeinflusst wird, scheint eben dieser Zugang nicht wirklich gewährleistet zu sein. Humor lässt sich schon bei der herkömmlichen Übersetzung schwer in andere Sprachen und somit auch in andere Kulturen transferieren. Bei der Untertitelung wird dies aufgrund notwendiger Kürzungen und der geforderten Bildsynchronität noch erschwert. Was aber passiert, wenn es sich nicht einfach nur um eine Untertitelung handelt, sondern um eine Untertitelung für Hörgeschädigte und Gehörlose? Eben dieser Frage widmen sich, jedenfalls im Bereich der Translationswissenschaft, bisher nur einige Untersuchungen. Doch der Bedarf an dieser Form der Untertitelung besteht und wächst stetig, da das durchschnittliche Alter der Bevölkerung zunimmt und somit auch die Anzahl an Menschen mit beeinträchtigtem Hörvermögen. Aber nicht nur auf dem Gebiet der TLW besteht Nachholbedarf. Nach wie vor werden nicht alle Sendungen im deutschsprachigen Fernsehen auch mit Untertiteln für Hörgeschädigte angeboten. In Österreich scheint die Lage zwar deutlich besser zu sein, als in Deutschland, dennoch wären 100% Zugänglichkeit für diese Zielgruppe wünschenswert. Bei DVDs sah die Lage noch vor einigen Jahren ähnlich aus. Betrachtet man DVDs, deren Erwerb schon etwas länger zurückliegt, so wird man nur wenige mit Untertiteln für Hörgeschädigte finden. Heute hingegen herrscht im deutschsprachigen Raum ein anderes Bild. So scheint es jedenfalls auf den ersten Blick. Denn ausländische Filmproduktionen bieten zwar alle zumindest in der Zielsprache (in diesem Fall also Deutsch) Untertitel für Hörgeschädigte, doch häufig unterscheiden sich diese kaum von den herkömmlichen Untertiteln. The serious investigation of humor’s function in society is an emerging area of research in critical humor studies, a “negative” subsect of the extensive and “positive” research that assumes humor’s goodness. Using Michael Billig’s theory of ridicule as a framework, this study explored how humor operated to discipline characters who broke social norms or allowed characters to rebel against those norms. Layering this with gender performative theory, the study also investigated how different male and female characters used ridicule and were subject to it themselves. After examining ridicule in The Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls, and The Odd Couple using a critical rhetorical analysis, the findings revealed that disciplinary ridicule was used more overtly throughout all three programs, while potentially rebellious ridicule emerged in only a few scenes. In addition, men were overwhelmingly the subjects of disciplinary ridicule, although women found themselves as subjects throughout all three programs as well.
