The study includes published research on the topic, as well as two interviews conducted with a Paz Martín Lozano, a Spanish politician who is an expert on Saharawi issues, and Jadiyetu El Mohtar, a Saharawi activist and representative of the National Union of Saharawi Women (UNMS) who was well known by the Spanish media due to the hunger strike that she went on at the Lanzarote Airport in 2009. Despite the unbearable extreme conditions, Saharawi people were able to organize their political, economic and social life in refugee camps in the middle of a desert, mainly thanks to the incredible Saharawi women who educate their children to fight for the liberation of the territory of Western Sahara in a peaceful and non-violent way. They are striving for the recognition of the Saharawi cause at the international level and raising awareness of their right to self-determination through a free and fair referendum. -

A new apseudomorph tanaidacean species, Calozodion moyas sp. nov., from the Moroccan Atlantic waters is described. The new species is the third species of the genus Calozodion Gardiner, 1973 known in the western African coasts and the tenth in the worldwide fauna. The main features by which the new species differs from all others of the genus Calozodion consist in the presence of a mediodorsale process at the basis of pereopod 2 (absent in C. bacescui Guţu, 1996, C. dollfusi Guţu, 1989, C. heardi Guţu, 2002, C. multispinosum Guţu, 1984 and C. singularis Guţu, 2002) and of five long setae on the first article of mandible palp (comparatively to at most three setae in the species C. dominiki Bochert, 2012, C. simile Guţu, 2006, C. suluk Bamber & Sheader, 2005 and C. wadei Gardiner, 1973). Other differences result from the identification key of the species of the genus Calozodion presented in the final part of this paper. Résumé. Une nouvelle espèce, Tanaidacé Apsedomorphe, Calozodion moyas sp. nov., est décrite des eaux atlantiques marocaines. C’est la troisième espèce du genre Calozodion Gardinier, 1973 connue des côtes de l’Afrique de l’Ouest et la dixième à l’échelle planétaire. On the Native Status of the Southern Right Whale Eubalaena Australis in Peru
Boletín del Museo Nacional de Historia Natural, Chile, 58: 75 - 82 (2009) ON THE NATIVE STATUS OF THE SOUTHERN RIGHT WHALE EUBALAENA AUSTRALIS IN PERU Koen Van Waerebeek 1, Luis Santillán1 and Edith Suazo 1,2 1 Peruvian Centre for Cetacean Research (CEPEC- Centro Peruano de Estudios Cetológicos), Museo de Delfines, Pucusana, Lima 20, Peru. e-mail: [email protected] 2 e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The native status of the southern right whale in Peruvian waters is now firmly supported by six confirmed sightings, including four cow-calf pairs, the northernmost at Pucusana (12°29’S,76°48’W) and off San Bartolo (12°24’S,77°11’W). An unconfirmed report exist from northern Peru. Five of six observations were shore-based, underscoring the importance of neritic habitat for E. australis also in Pacific South America. As sighting intervals have shortened over a period of two decades (near significant trend, P= 0.054) without indication of improved reporting, a guarded optimism for the recovery of E. australis in Peru may be warranted. However, a near-collision event with a fishing boat warns of conservation challenges ahead. As applies to three other cetacean species, the coast of Peru is proposed as the most boreal habitual range for E. australis on the planet, enabled by the cooling effects of the strongest of eastern boundary currents. Zooplankton were sampled using a bongo Cintra Bay; Zooplankton; net, 150 mm mesh size, during two surveys, in autumn 2015 and spring 2016, extending from the coast Copepods; to the open sea. Fourteen zooplankton groups were identified, where copepods represented 49.1% and 92.5% of the total abundance in autumn 2015 and spring 2016, respectively. Tintinnids accounted Diversity indices; Environmental for 39.7% and 4.7%, respectively. The total zooplankton abundance was higher in autumn À3 À3 parameters (55 992 ind m ) than in spring (2123 ind m ). Nineteen species of copepods, belonging to 14 fami- lies, were identified. Euterpina acutifrons and Oithona nana were the most common and abundant species. The Acartiids were represented by three species (Acartia clausi, A. tonsa and A. bifilosa) in autumn and one species in spring (A. clausi). The copepods diversity was significantly different between the two seasons showing high values at the entrance and the center of the bay in autumn 2015 and in the southern half of the bay in spring 2016. -
