Download Itinerary SOUTH GEORGIA - THE FALKLANDS & SOUTH GEORGIA TRIP CODE ACAXFSG DEPARTURE 02/10/2021, 01/10/2022, 15/10/2022 DURATION 15 Days LOCATIONS Falkland Islands & South Georgia. INTRODUCTION This incredible 15 day voyage will allow you to explore the wonders of the Falklands and South Georgia. On board the Magellan Explorer, you will embark from Port Stanley on an amazing journey which perfectly combines beautiful natural landscapes with incredible wildlife experiences. Discover the immense raw beauty of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, dotted with a myriad of contrasting islands of dramatic cliffs, snow capped peaks and graceful sandy bays. Encounter wildlife including seals, whales, albatross, and some of the largest colonies of king penguin. This is a beautiful and raw experience which will expose you to some of the most dramatic beauty and incredible natural experiences the islands have to offer. ITINERARY DAY 1: Embarkation in Port Stanley Pick up at the airport in Port Stanley, town visit, and embarkation Port Stanley is the capital of the Falkland Island. A wilderness experience, the main attractions there are 02/10/2021, 01/10/2022, rockhopper penguins, nesting black browed 15/10/2022 albatross, and sub-Antarctic Gentoo penguins. In the afternoon we visit Carcass Island. There is an DURATION option for an easy hike to the settlement, bird watching, and a typical Falklands tea experience. 15 Days DAY 3: New Island, Weddell Island LOCATIONS We visit New Island, a classic West Falklands Falkland Islands & South experience, with albatross & penguin colonies. Georgia. Depending on local conditions, in the afternoon we could visit Weddell Island.. the third largest island in the Falkland Islands archipelago. DAY 4: Bleaker Island Morning landing at Bleaker Island. This is a natural reserve with a famous bird area featuring a large variety of birds, including massive cormorants. Bleaker Island is also known for its sustainable sheep and cattle farming. The Island is also features beautiful scenery such as the long stretch of beach known as Sandy Bay. In the afternoon we head to South Georgia. DAY 5: At Sea - Day 5 & 6 As we sail toward South Georgia, attend an engaging program of lectures and presentations. In the company of expert guides, watch for wildlife from the lounge or from the outside decks. Provided we receive approval from the South Georgia 02/10/2021, 01/10/2022, Government, we plan to do an evening Zodiac 15/10/2022 cruise at Elsehul Bay. The island bay is home to a large colony of fur seals that you may be lucky DURATION enough to see. 15 Days DAY 8: Grytviken, Fortuna Bay LOCATIONS Our first landing is at Grytviken. We clear Customs Falkland Islands & South and then visit the historical site, with the museum Georgia. and Ernest Shackleton’s grave. In the afternoon, we land at Fortuna Bay / Stromness to see king penguins. Here we learn more about Shackleton and his expedition. There is also an optional 2-3 hour “Shackleton walk”. DAY 9: Gold Harbour, Cooper Bay In the morning we plan a landing at Gold Harbour. This is a spectacular location with king penguins, elephant seals and hanging glaciers. There are also sooty albatross here. In the afternoon, we visit Cooper Bay to see macaroni penguins during a Zodiac cruise. DAY 10: St Andrews Bay, Ocean Harbour St Andrews Bay is the destination of our morning excursion. We see the largest king penguin colony, and elephant seal bulls. Enjoy incredible scenery 15/10/2022 of tussock-covered hills and studded bays where elephant and fur seals converge. DURATION 15 Days DAY 12: At Sea - Days 12 to 14 LOCATIONS The following days will be spent at sea as you Falkland Islands & South make your way to Islas Malvinas. Our clients also receive restaurant recommendations which support locally owned restaurants We carefully select all ships we work with and choose smaller sized vessels to create less impact. We use a highly regulated, licensed vessel which is well equipped to operate in the Antarctic’s delicate ecosystem. We view the voyage to the Antarctic as an expedition, not a sightseeing trip. Smaller boats such as ours can navigate narrow waterways and are far less polluting than the larger ships in Antarctic waters. By carrying less passengers, we have far less waste. The waste is carried back to the home port to allow for environmentally conscious waste management and disposal.     Antarctica, South Georgia & the Falkland Islands January 5 - 26, 2017 ARGENTINA Saunders Island Fortuna Bay Steeple Jason Island Stromness Bay Grytviken Tierra del Fuego FALKLAND SOUTH Gold Harbour ISLANDS GEORGIA CHILE SCOTIA SEA Drygalski Fjord Ushuaia Elephant Island DRAKE Livingston Island Deception PASSAGE Island LEMAIRE CHANNEL Cuverville Island ANTARCTIC PENINSULA Friday & Saturday, January 6 & 7, 2017 Ushuaia, Argentina / Beagle Channel / Embark Ocean Diamond Ushuaia, ‘Fin del Mundo,’ at the southernmost tip of Argentina was where we gathered for the start of our Antarctic adventure, and after a night’s rest, we set out on various excursions to explore the neighborhood of the end of the world. The keen birders were the first away, on their mission to the Tierra del Fuego National Park in search of the Magellanic woodpecker. They were rewarded with sightings of both male and female woodpeckers, Andean condors, flocks of Austral parakeets, and a wonderful view of an Austral pygmy owl, as well as a wide variety of other birds to check off their lists. The majority of our group went off on a catamaran tour of the Beagle Channel, where we saw South American sea lions on offshore islands before sailing on to the national park for a walk along the shore and an enjoyable Argentinian BBQ lunch. Others chose to hike in the deciduous beech forests of Reserva Natural Cerro Alarkén around the Arakur Resort & Spa. After only a few minutes of hiking, we saw an Andean condor soar above us and watched as a stunning red and black Magellanic woodpecker flew towards us and perched on the trunk of a nearby tree.

    The Sea Lion Islands: A Chronological History D. Bailey, Historian in Residence, 2019 Sea Lion Island is the most Southerly occupied Island in the Falklands archipelago and is the largest of the ‘Sea Lion Islands’ group. They first appear named on a map of ‘Hawkins Maidenland’ in 1689 and have been known as the Sea Lion Islands since. Not a great deal is known about Sea Lion Island’s history between its discovery and the mid- nineteenth century but it is safe to assume that the bountiful stocks of seals and sea lions were brutally exploited by the many (predominantly American) sealers visiting the Falklands to take advantage of their lack of protection. In terms of ownership, the islands are first mentioned included in a grant issued to Alexander Ross and Samuel Lafone (who lent his name to Lafonia) in 1846. In their early prospectus (1849) they mention the islands’ use for the profitable sealing industry that had been steadily wiping out the populations on the islands for the best part of a hundred years. The Sea Lion Islands are referred to as being “favourite resorts of these valuable animals” but it was later noted that “…Hitherto, these valuable rookeries have been so much poached by French and American adventurers and fished in so indiscriminate a manner, that on some of the best grounds the animals are becoming shy and scarce;…” As with many of the Falkland Islands, Sea Lion Island does have a rich maritime history often linked either to the perilous waters around Cape Horn or to the shallow reefs off the island itself.

Guided by our ornithologist, Jim Wilson, our birders were first out, keen to find their target species, the Magellanic woodpecker. In this they were more than successful, spotting five, both males and females. Meanwhile, the rest of us boarded a catamaran and sailed the Beagle Channel towards the national park. En route we visited several small rocky islands, home to South American sea lions, imperial and rock cormorants (or shags), and South American terns. Disembarking in the national park at Lapataia Bay, we enjoyed lunch and walking trails through the southern beech forest with views of the Beagle Channel and Lago Roca before heading back to Ushuaia by bus. Awaiting us there was our home for the next few weeks, the Island Sky. Once settled in our cabins, we went out on deck to watch the lines being cast off and we sailed out into the Beagle Channel. Our Antarctic adventure had begun! Sunday, January 27 At Sea Our day at sea began with Jim introducing us to the birds of the Falkland Islands, and preparing us for our upcoming wildlife encounters.

A survey of the breeding population conducted in the austral summers of 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 indicates that the current population is likely to be the highest it has been for perhaps the last 100 years.

    December 2017 The Falkland Islands By Dr. Madeline Kalbach Travel study is one of the best ways to learn about wildlife and wildlife behaviour whether here on the Refuge or in far-away places. I was lucky enough to go on travel study with the University of Calgary for three weeks in October and November, 2017. This article covers the first two weeks of my wildlife study sojourn which took place in the Falkland Islands. The Falkland Islands are an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom. They are self-governing and financially viable. The archipelago has its own constitution, and by it the UK is responsible for their defence and foreign affairs. The Falklands are a cluster of isles 350 kilometers east of Tierra del Fuego at the Southern tip of South America. East Falkland is the largest island in the archipelago, while West Falkland is the second largest. Other islands, of which there are more than 750, are scattered around the edges of East and West Falkland. The large and most visited of the outer islands offers something different, both in terms of flora, fauna, and natural beauty. The hospitality of the hosts on the outer islands and the wildlife have made it a trip to remember. It is a wonderful experience to be among and with folks who are conservation minded, hold the wildlife in high regard, and do everything they can to protect it. Introduction & background information South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) is a United Kingdom Overseas Territory. It is administered by the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) based in Government House in Stanley in the Falkland Islands. The Commissioner for the Territory, who is also the Governor of the Falkland Islands, is appointed by Her Majesty The Queen and has ultimate responsibility for any activities in the Territory. GSGSSI staff include 6 staff in Government House, plus three Government Officers based at King Edward Point (KEP) on South Georgia, who are responsible for the local administration on the island. This document is intended to provide a general overview of the South Georgia visit application procedures and provide information on relevant Government visitor policies. This document must be read in conjunction with the separate GSGSSI Biosecurity Handbook (2016). Following the recent habitat restoration projects targeting rats, mice and reindeer, as well as ongoing work to control invasive plants and recent outbreaks of avian disease, it is essential that all visitors rigorously implement all biosecurity measures.
