Ministry of Economic Development Republic of Maldives 1 The Maldives lies in two rows of atolls in the Indian Ocean, just across the equator. The country is made up of 1,190 coral islands formed around 26 natural ring-like atolls, spread over 90,000 square kilometres. 2 Vessels known as “Dhoni” provide the main source of public transportation between the various atolls. These diesel engine-powered boats are the cheapest and most commonly available mode of transport in the archipelago. 3 Ferry transportation is the best mode to Maldives, as the large percentage of the country is Sea. We need to develop reliable ferry transport system. 4 Land transport service will not be feasible except in few Islands. Regular taxi service is available in major cities. 5 Maldivian is flying to 14 Transportation for destinations (domestic 9 Tourist Resorts are and 5 International) with mainly carried out by Sea 11 fleets.
