STROGANOV MINYEIAS JUNE Side A Row 1 June 1: Saint Justin the Philosopher was born around 114 and was raised studying in various Greek schools. At the age of thirteen, he was baptized and began to search for Christian philosophy. In the year 155, when Emperor Antoninus Pius started to persecute Christians, Saint Justin personally gave him an apology in defense of two Christians who were innocently condemned to execution. When he arrived in Rome to debate with Crescentius, who he had always beaten, he found that there were many false accu- sations against him brought to the court and Saint Justin was imprisoned on false charges. He was killed in the year 165. June 1: Saint Dionysius of Glushitsa was one of the greatest ascetics of St. Petersburg, Russia. After being tonsured, he spent nine years in a monastery until he went to a remote area named Saint Luke. There he established a monastery dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Monks began to gather at the site and soon he needed to build another monastery. The saint fell ill on May 29, 1437, and died three days later on June 1 at the age of 74. June 2: Saint Nicephorus, Patriarch of Constantinople, was born in 758 and was raised reading the Holy Scriptures. He was pressured by the emperor Nicephorus to lead the imperial city’s main poorhouse. After four years, Saint Nicephorus was tonsured and became the Patriarch of Constantinople on April 12, 806. After Leo the Armenian took the throne, Saint Nicephorus was exiled and tortured for his beliefs.

For his charity God enlightened him with the knowledge of Christian truth. The bravery of the saintly soldier was revealed after he, with the help of God, killed a giant serpent living on a precipice in the outskirts of Euchaita. The serpent had devoured many people and animals, terroriz- ing the countryside. St Theodore armed himself with a sword and vanquished it, glorify- ing the name of Christ among the people. For his bravery St Theodore was appointed military commander [stratelatos] in the city of Heraclea, where he combined his military service with preaching the Gospel among the pagans subject to him.

Negotiating the Roman Past in Later Tenth-Century Armenia
Negotiating the Roman Past in Later Tenth-century Armenia Tim Greenwood* The Byzantine expansion eastwards into historic regions of Armenia in the second half of the tenth century and the Armenian responses to that expansion both receive modest coverage in Armenian historical narratives. Yet several works of Armenian historical literature were composed during this period which do not comment directly upon present circumstances but which, nevertheless, can be examined for what they reveal about the attitudes of their compilers. This study examines how historic Roman-Armenian encounters were represented in three such works. Despite their proximate dating, they attest a range of perspectives. The anonymous author of the History of Tarōn reimagined the conversion of Armenia at the start of the fourth century by Saint Gregory the Illuminator, highlighting the contribution of the metropolitan of Caesarea in the establishment of sees, monasteries and martyria across the region. A similar process was underway at the time following the Byzantine annexation of Tarōn and the attendant reconfiguration of the ecclesiological landscape. The History of Uxtanēs bishop of Sebasteia was completed between 980 and 989 CE by an Armenian ortho dox bishop and projects historic antagonism between Romans and Armenians. Uxtanēs sharpened the negative presentation of several Roman emperors from Antiquity by applying derogatory epithets usually reserved in Armenian literature for oppressive Persian Šahanšahs. At the same time, Armenian leaders were projected as compromising their auto- nomy.
