Having a weapon without a license is dangerous and suspicious, especially for families with children. The sad part here is that in most cases, these weapons are being used in weddings as a kind of expression of joy. In several incidents, many inno- cents have been injured or killed because of stray bullets. I agree that this campaign has all the good reasons to be held, but how cooperative are the people? The law has serious penalties for violators rang- ing from five years imprisonment for possession and 10 years imprisonment for trade in arms, in addition to a fine exceeding $150,000. The MoI should extend this campaign to all segments of society including expatriates of all nationalities without any exceptions. All NGOs must also sup- port this effort. Not all people are alike. Some peo- ple have been cooperative and handed over their weapons, but some have ignored the call and their weapons will be taken by force with penalties. This campaign to collect weapons may not con- tribute directly to the reduction in the rates of vio- lence and crime that have spread in recent times, but it provides a general message about the seri- ousness of the matter, because the presence of arms gives an impetus to commit a crime easily. Such campaigns should not have an expiry date and must remain effective as long as possible. KUWAIT: Divers from Sea Club prepare themselves for a pearl diving expedition. — Photo by Joseph Shagra

GENEVA: Visiting Deputy Chairman of Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) Anwar Al-Hasawi yesterday called for helping humanitarian organizations in securing relief assistance to people in war-stricken Yemen. “Philanthropic organizations have to step up their efforts to address the tragic situation in Yemen, and seek to provide medical and food aid to our brothers there,” Al-Hasawi told KUNA on sidelines of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (ICRC) meeting for Yemen, currently held here. “Providing urgent humanitarian assistance to the Yemeni people is a priority to the Kuwaiti Red Crescent Society,” he said, indicating that the society had delivered 40 tons of medicines and medical supplies to hospitals in Mukalla, Yemen, during the past few days. Moreover, there has been coordination with the Saudi Red Crescent Society and King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Works to deliver various forms of assistance needed to the Yemeni people, struggling to survive under exceptional circumstances of the war, Al-Hasawi said. BAGHDAD: Iraq has exhumed the remains of 470 people believed to have been executed by jihadists near Tikrit last year in what is known as the Speicher massacre, the health minister said yesterday. “We have exhumed the bodies of 470 Speicher martyrs from burial sites in Tikrit,” Adila Hammoud said at a press confer- ence in Baghdad. In June 2014, armed men belonging or allied to the Islamic State group abducted hundreds of young, mostly Shiite recruits from Speicher military base, just outside the city of Tikrit. They were then lined up in several locations and executed one by one, as shown in pictures and footage later released by the Islamic State group. Some were pushed into the Tigris river, others hastily buried in locations that were discovered when government and allied forces retook Tikrit from the jihadists about two months ago. The highest estimate for the number of people killed in one of the worst atrocities committed by IS stands at 1,700. “These bodies come from four burial sites... One of them was bigger than the others and contained 400,” said Ziad Ali Abbas, the chief doctor at Baghdad’s main morgue. He said forensic examination of the exhumed remains was conducted with foreign assistance, includ- ing from the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Britain’s tied visa rules fuel abuse of maids, nannies

LONDON: When Susi, a single mother from the Philippines, left for a job in Qatar, she convinced herself it was a sacrifice worth making for her children at home. For more than a year, Susi’s sacrifice involved waking before dawn and working past midnight, cooking, cleaning and looking after a Qatari family. Once every two months, she was given a “day” off - in reality, it amounted to eight hours off. Conditions deteriorated when Susi was brought to Britain by her boss. She was given no time off, forced to sleep in a storeroom which she shared with two other maids, and forbidden to leave her employer’s house, even to go into the garden. The ordeal continued until Susi, who requested anonymity, found her confiscated passport while cleaning one day, and escaped. “I was prepared to do anything to provide for my children,” Susi told staff from a London charity who later advised her. Britain has been keen to present itself as a world leader in the fight against slavery, servitude and forced labor, and passed an anti-slavery law in March to help victims like Susi. But critics say the law fails thousands of foreign domestic workers by imposing visa rules that tie them to their employer, making them vulnerable to abuse. Tied visas have “unintentionally strengthened the hand of the slave master against the victim of slavery”, according to a parliamentary committee scruti- nizing the Modern Slavery Bill. The rules have also been compared by Human Rights Watch with TEXAS: A fence is overtaken by the river as authorities call for an evacuation of Horseshoe Bend, Texas because the “kafala”, a contentious visa sponsorship system used by Gulf states, Brazos River is expected to flood.— AP which the United Nations says is a source of labor abuse that must be abolished. “There’s a significant amount of information showing that these types of visa facilitate abuse and make it difficult for peo- Swollen rivers cause ple to access redress,” said Izza Leghtas, a researcher for Human Rights Watch. “It’s very difficult for them to come forward and con- tact the authorities when their biggest fear is being deported back to their home countries and not being able to support their families,” Texas cities to worry she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

WASHINGTON: As many as 22 people in South Korea and four US lab workers may have been exposed to anthrax after the American military accidentally shipped out at least one live sample, officials said. The four lab employees were undergoing medical treatment as a precaution after the mili- tary sent the sample inside the country to a commercial lab in Maryland, US officials said Wednesday. As many as 22 per- sonnel may have been exposed to anthrax during a laborato- ry training exercise at the US Osan Air Force Base in South Korea using samples shipped from the same batch, a military statement said yesterday. In addition to the military base in South Korea, more than a dozen other government and commercial labs in nine US states had received samples from the accidental shipment, officials said. All of the samples had been irradiated in March last year at a military lab in Utah and were supposed to be “dead.” But a private firm in Maryland notified authorities that its sample was still active, setting off an urgent review of all material sent out to other labs, defense officials said. Four people at three different companies that had “worked with the live anthrax” were receiving post-exposure treatment as a precaution.

That conflict, marked by brutal ethnic violence between the country’s ethnic Hutu and Tutsi communities, left hundreds of thousands of people dead, and there are fears the latest unrest could plunge the small, land- locked and impoverished nation back into widespread violence. The Catholic Church has already spoken out against the president, saying it too has concluded his third-term bid goes against the peace deal.

FRIDAY 29 MAY, 2015 Entertainment Why you should be watching

By Aakash Bakaya

rom ‘The Sopranos’ to ‘The Wire’ and most recently ‘True Detective’, HBO has been the guiding light for high-quality television programming. But none of its shows has reached the absurdly high popularity ratings of ‘Game of FThrones’. Based on George RR Martin’s epic fantasy saga, ‘Game of Thrones’ (GOT for short) has all the ingredients and surprises that make for an almost perfect television show. It might not reach the epic scale of the books, but cre- ators David Benioff and DB Weiss have nonetheless crafted a television masterpiece. Even if you’re not into the fantasy genre, GOT has everything you want from grandiose storytelling. Here are some of the main reasons you must check out ‘Game of Thrones’, no matter who you are.

A world that draws you in

Unlike other fantasy worlds, GOT is steeped in our own human history. The lands of Westeros and Essos are heavily inspired by historic real world locations and filled with very real human characters. There are no dwarves or elf races here - instead we are given an introspection of how our ancestors might have acted all those centuries ago. It is a brutal and harsh landscape that twists common fantasy tropes from both our fictional stories and our actual past. FRIDAY 29 MAY, 2015

A mix of genres

GOT would not be a global phenome- non if it was solely a political war drama. One of the core strengths of the show is how it deftly handles a variety of themes and tropes and gives its own twists to them. The romance stories are not dreamy or soft - they are sometimes absurd and forced due to necessity. The action surpasses Hollywood quality at times and even the comedic, lighter parts are sharp and memo- rable. The show was seemingly made for the Internet age as all these dynamics and dialogues are passed around and discussed, which only increases its already massive audience. Relatable and realistic characters

Strong characters are backbones of all great stories but don’t expect to find any two-dimensional heroes or villains. Here, every character is flawed and driven by their own motivations, looking to get the upper hand or simply hoping for a better outcome. Honorable figures are murdered because their decisions aren’t always the right ones and horrible people win because victories are achieved by people who play the dirtiest. Martin addresses the gratuitous violence the best - “To omit them from a narrative centered on war and power would have been fundamentally false and dishonest, and would have undermined one of the themes of the books: That the true horrors of human history derive not from orcs and Dark Lords, but from ourselves. We are the monsters. (And the heroes too).” Lore, lore and A show made for more lore binge watching GOT is headlined by four great houses (think of them as rul- The fifth season is in its final stretch this week but this does- ing families). And when you’re done with the show, you can always dive into the even better books, which will engross you into a much deeper story that no visual medium can do justice. If you’re not convinced yet - here’s something that might peak your interest. Apart from the human drama, there are giant wolves, zombie armies, faceless assassins and dragons. Waimanalo Bay Beach Park tops best beach’s list

s the sun rises over the Pacific Ocean, Waimanalo Bay’s powdery white coral sand glows in the morning light. AA few people lounge in the sand as a fisherman casts his line into the turquoise water. On Thursday, Waimanalo Bay Beach Park was named the top beach on an annual top 10 list of US beaches compiled by a coastal science professor known as Dr Beach. Professor Stephen Leatherman of Florida International University compiles the popular list of best public beaches in the United States using 50 criteria, including best sand and water quality, environmental management and amenities. Waimanalo Bay Beach Park beat out Barefoot Beach in Florida as the top pick for 2015, according to Dr Beach. In recent years Leatherman has given extra points to beaches that have good safety records and no-smoking rules. “Cigarette butts are the number one form of litter on beaches - plastics in terms of volume but in terms of numbers it’s ciga- rette butts - so I’m starting to give beaches extra credit for no smoking,” Leatherman said in a telephone interview Monday.

‘Little gems’ Leatherman said he has been to beaches where he count- ed 10 cigarette butts in a square meter, but smoking is illegal on beaches in Oahu, giving the island a boost on the list. Leatherman cited Waimanalo’s unassuming location, on a sin- gle-lane road in a rural stretch of the windward coast of Oahu, as another reason for its selection as the best of 2015. It’s located in a quiet town near an Air Force base, far away from the busy streets of Waikiki. “It’s a beach that a lot of people don’t know much about,” Travel FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2015 30

Leatherman said. “I think it’s one of those little gems. A lot of, shall we say, tourists - people from out of state - miss it all together.” Leatherman, who visits all the beaches on his lists, said Waimanalo Bay Beach Park is one of the longest in Hawaii and is the longest on the island of Oahu. “If you’re into beachcombing, you’ve got plenty of beach to walk on,” he said. Clean water and sand were important factors for Leatherman in deciding this year’s best beaches. Safety and environmental management were also key compo- nents. Waimanalo Bay Beach Park has lifeguards on duty and the water is not very deep or treacherous, Leatherman says. “There are a lot of beaches in Hawaii that are absolutely gorgeous but not very safe,” he added. Phillip Quiton Jr, a Native Hawaiian who was born and raised in Kaneohe, Hawaii, was fishing with friends Warrick and Warren Kekauoha on Waimanalo Bay on Tuesday. He said he comes to the beach a lot to fish, but never to surf. “There isn’t much surf here,” he said of the rela- tively calm blue waters. But it’s good for fishing, he said. “Nobody else is here, I guess for whatever reason they believe there isn’t much fish.” A few minutes later one of his friends landed a bonefish.

Great features Quiton said the ease of access and rock-free sand are other factors for frequenting this particular stretch of shore. Ali Junell, of Portland Oregon, and Kristen Carmichael, of Los Angeles, were lounging on the beach near the three fishermen on Tuesday. They were told about the spot by a friend who lives and works nearby. “There’s no one here,” Junell said. “It’s pretty empty and the waves aren’t overwhelming.” “It’s nice to be at a beach with blue water that you can get in if it gets too hot,” she added. Hamoa Beach on Maui also made this year’s list, joining beaches in Florida, Massachusetts, the Carolinas and California to round out the top 10. Hawaiian beaches have won the top beach designation 14 of the 25 years Leatherman has published the list. After Waimanalo, the other beaches on this year’s list are Barefoot Beach in Bonita Springs, Florida, in the No 2 spot, followed by St George Island State Park on the Florida Panhandle; Hamoa Beach on Maui, Hawaii; Cape Hatteras, Outer Banks of North Carolina; Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne, Florida; Coast Guard Beach on Cape Cod, Massachusetts; Beachwalker Park on Kiawah Island, South Carlolina; Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park in Naples, Florida; and East Beach in Santa Barbara, California. Up until now, any beach that won the top spot on Dr. Beach’s list was retired and became ineligible for inclusion in subsequent years. However, Dr. Beach says after 25 years of publication, next year he will clear the slate and allow any beach in the nation to once again be eligible for the contest and for the top pick. “I’m going to start all over next year,” he said. “This is the end of a 25-year, quarter century run and every beach is eligible again next year.” —AP Leisure FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2015

Rising activism in the ‘world’s workshop’ challenges China

PANYU: As workers gathered around a table in a cheap restaurant to discuss strike action against their shoe factory bosses, Chinese police barged in and dragged away their leaders. More than 2,000 employ- ees at the plant-which counts foreign brands including Coach among its customers, according to workers-had downed tools, camping out on brightly colored mats to demand unpaid benefits. “They burst through the door and told us not to move,” a female worker told AFP. Champ Nadal canters while Kokkinakis breaks through

PARIS: Defending champion Rafael Nadal stayed on course for a 10th French Open title with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 breeze past compatriot Nicolas Almagro yesterday. But teenager Thanasi Kokkinakis gave a glimpse of the potential future of the sport when he saved three match points to beat fellow Australian Bernard Tomic 3-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 8-6 to make the third round of a major for the first time. Serena Williams played with fire at the French Open yesterday but the world number one pulled through to the third round with a 5-7 6-3 6-3 win against unheralded German Anna-Lena Friedsam. The American hit a flurry of unforced errors in the first set and faced two break points in the first game of the second before she regained her composure. Williams, whose 19 grand slam titles include the French Open crowns in 2002 and 2013, has already experienced spectacular failures here, having been knocked out in the first round in 2012 and in the second round last year. But when she broke Friedsam’s serve at the start of the third set the chance of a repeat began to fade away as the German’s belief finally with- ered. Williams broke serve again to claim victory and she will next face either 27th seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus or Czech Lucie Hradescka. Sixth seed Nadal will face either Austria’s Jurgen Melzer or Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia for a place in the last 16. “I am very happy. I played a great match and was very solid,” said nine-time champion Nadal who has now defeated Almagro 13 times out of 14. Nadal edged ahead with what proved to be the crucuial break for a 2-1 lead in the first set.

Sponsors pile pressure on Blatter ahead of vote ZURICH: Sponsors piled pressure on FIFA leader to clean up world football as two major corruption scandals overshadowed the start of a congress yesterday at which he will seek a new term. The beleaguered 79-year-old president met with the heads of all six football confederations on Thursday, according to sources who gave no details about the talks. Amid some calls for him to stand down. Blatter remains favourite to win the presidential election today however. Credit card giant Visa said it would “reassess” its sponsorship of FIFA unless it takes immediate action after the arrest of top FIFA leaders accused by US authorities of taking huge bribes. While Swiss police are investigating the award of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar, US documents indi- cate that South Africa paid bribes to FIFA officials to secure the 2010 World Cup. Visa said that unless FIFA rebuilds a corporate culture with “strong ethical practices” at its heart, “we have informed them that we will reassess our sponsorship”. Coca-Cola, Adidas, McDonald’s and Budweiser all spoke out against the corruption scandal. Corporate backers provide hundreds of millions of dollars to FIFA’s finances.

NEW YORK: Former FIFA executive committee member Chuck Blazer appears to have provided key information that has been central to the Justice Department’s soccer corruption investi- gation, linking other officials in the Americas to a series of schemes.
