4 April 2009 Hocking Hills Spring Drive and Hike April 25, 2009 Located in the picturesque sandstone region of Southeastern Ohio, Hocking Hills State Park encompasses some of the most scenic areas in the entire state. Rock outcrops, deep cool gorges, and waterfalls are found throughout the area.

The drives will be through the best roads around and the hikes will be on easy trails, hand-picked by a member who lives and drives there every day. We’ll spend plenty of time in the cars to satisfy the driving enthusiast in each of us, and have a chance to stretch our legs as we breath the pine-scented air while walking through hemlock groves to marvel at cascading waterfalls, breathtaking cliffs, deep recess caves and forestland as far as the eye can see.

Bring a pair of shoes for driving and a pair of sturdy shoes for the hike. A mat or garbage bag for the hiking shoes is a good idea as the trails may be wet, but not muddy, in the spring.

We will finish up with a fantastic dinner at one of the local res- taurants. 5 Drive and Hike Itinerary: 10:00am Columbus area members meet in Frisch’s Big Boy parking lot 3920 S Hamilton Rd Grove City, OH 43125 10:30am Porsche caravan Departs for hocking hills

It is time to end the hibernation. Bulbs are forcing their way up, hearty buds are emerging and are begging to be driven. By the time you read this the season opening 24 hours of Daytona occurred 60 days ago. While we might just see another snowfall before spring, it’s time for us Midwesterners to wake up and get ready. This year we are going to have it pretty good. As most of the ardent readers know, I began my autocross diatribes last year in hopes of increasing the participation at the events. This year the club has an- swered with 4 local autocrosses. That’s right, you can actually autocross 4 times this year without you or the Porsche getting more than a mile or so outside the beltway. Due to some scheduling changes MOR has been lucky enough to host two of the IRAC series events this year. For those of you that are not familiar with IRAC, it stands for the Inter Regional Autocross Champion- ship. Basically, you can accumulate points at each IRAC event scheduled by Porsche clubs throughout Ohio and at the end of the season they announce the standings for each class. You can also run in IRAC events even if you have no interest in accumulating points. It is open to everyone just like a non-IRAC event would be. What’s more, there are two non-IRAC events this year too. One is held at Westerville High School and the other is going to be held at Columbus Motor Speedway. This will be our second Westerville HS autocross and the event last year was a great one. The Columbus Motor Speedway event will be our first there and it should be the one to bring all of your family and friends as there will be grandstand seating for all. We would like to see everyone come out for all 4 events but with this many; most of you should be able to at least schedule one or two. For those of you contemplating their first autocross, I have assembled a few bits of wisdom learned from almost 2 years of auto crossing: 1) Before the event you might get a case of the stomach butterflies. This will pass. 2) You will probably get lost on the course, everyone does, we will be able to find you. 3) You will probably hit cones, everybody does, they don’t hurt your car and nobody get’s upset when you do hit them. (It gives the guys out on the course something to do) 4) They will tech your car, but they will likely let you run, after you remove the compact disks, hair- brushes, fuzzy dice and curb feelers. (The curb feelers knock over cones) 5) You will not go as fast as some of the guys who have been doing this for 15 plus years. (These guys have been praying to the autocross gods for a long time and you’ll just have to live with it) 6) Hopefully, you will go fast enough that your car slides around a little bit and at this point you won’t care anymore about your stomach butterflies, the cone you just hit, the fuzzy dice they made you take out of your car, or the fact that you are not going as fast as the 15 year veterans; you will have a big grin on your face that takes you back to your first roller coaster ride, first kiss and the first time you floored your buddies muscle car. (It’s that good)

For those road racers out there who have been avoiding the autocross scene, all I can say is what I read this winter in Road and Track: “If road racing was any harder, they would call it autocross.” The gauntlet has been thrown, road racers, you need to come out and battle with the autocross veterans.

So, that is it in a nutshell, bring 25 bucks and have some legal fun with your Porsche never having to leave town. Please see the Autocross calendar in this newsletter for all local, state and IRAC events.

14 April 2009 The car described as the “Greatest Racing Car in History” celebrates its 40th birthday

Atlanta - March 9, 2008 - Forty years ago on March 13, 1969 at the Geneva International Motor Show, today’s Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche unveiled a car that, even by today’s stan- dards, is underestimated when it is described as the “super sports car”: The . It became a legend as one of the fastest and most successful racing cars of all time.

Porsche fired the starting shot for Project 917 in June 1968, after the international motor sports authority or FIA had announced a class of “homologated sports cars” with up to five liters cubic capacity and a minimum weight of 800 kilograms. Under the supervision of Ferdinand Piëch, the stipulated 25 units of the new racing car model were completed by April 1969 so that the 917 could begin its racing career in the same year. After it initially dropped out of its first three races due to technical problems, the 917 success story began in August 1969 at a 1,000-kilometer race at the Österreichring with a victory by Jo Siffert and Kurt Ahrens.

The engine configuration of the 917 was just as unusual as its different car body ver- sions: Behind the driver’s extended an air-cooled, twelve-cylinder engine with hori- zontal cylinders, whose crankshaft designated it as a 180-degree V engine. The 520 HP engine had an initial cubic capacity of 4.5 liters. The tubular frame was made of alumi- num, the car body out of glass fiber reinforced synthetics. Porsche engineers developed different car body models to best meet the different demands of different racetracks. The so-called short-tail model was designed for heavily twisting roads in which a high contact pressure was necessary for fast cornering. The long-tail model was designed for fast racetracks and a high final velocity. Then came the open 917 Spyders, which were used in the CanAm and Interseries races.

At the end of the 1970 race season, Porsche confirmed its superiority with the 917 and 908/03 models, winning the Racing Series World Championship [Markenweltmeisterschaft] in nine out of ten possible victories. This series of victories began in Daytona and continued in Brands Hatch, Monza, Spa, on the Nürburgring race- track, at the Targa Florio, in Le Mans, Watkins Glen and the Österreichring. However, the season’s high point was the long-desired overall win of the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race, a trophy that and brought home to Zuffenhausen on June 14, 1970. Their 917 short-tail model painted in the Porsche Salzburg colors of red and white with the start number 23 not only successfully defied its competitors but also the heavy rainfall.

As in the previous year, the 1971 season was dominated by the 917 model so that the Racing Series World Championship [Markenweltmeisterschaft] went to Porsche again with eight out of ten race victories. And once again, a Porsche 917 was victorious at the Le Mans 24-Hour race – this time with and Dr. , who set a world record with an average speed of 222 km/h and 5,335 kilometers driven, a record Continued on page 16 15 Continued from page 15 that still stands today. One special feature of their 917 short-tail model, visually charac- terized by its “shark fin”, was the tubular frame made of magnesium. A 917 long-tail coupe model set a further record in 1971: On the Mulsanne straight stretch, which is part of the route in the Le Mans 24-Hour race, the sports car with the start number 21 re- corded the highest speed of 387 kilometers per hour. Another Le Mans racecar achieved major recognition: The Porsche 917/20 was a mix between the short-tail and the long- tail models and was notable for its broad proportions. Although the pink colored racecar, nicknamed “the Pig”, dropped out halfway through the race, its unusual paint color made it one of the most famous Porsche models ever.

When the European FIA regulation for the “five-liter sports car” expired at the end of the 1971 season, Porsche decided to enter the Canadian American Challenge Cup (CanAm). In June 1972, the private Penske race team in motor sports used the turbo-charged Porsche 917/10 Spyder for the first time. With a performance of up to 1,000 HP, the Porsche Spyder dominated the race series and won for Porsche the CanAM championship with victories in , Mid Ohio, Elkhart Lake, Laguna Seca and Riverside. In the following year, the 1,200 HP 917/30 Spyder had its racing premiere. The superiority of the monster car driven by Mark Donohue was so obvious that the regulations of the CanAM series had to be changed in the end in order to exclude the 917/30 from compet- ing further in the 1974 season. Typical for Porsche: The technologies for increasing performance developed for these races were successfully transferred to the on-road sports car. That’s how the 911 Turbo, with its side-exhaust turbocharger, began its career in 1974 and has been, since this time, a synonym for the performance capacity of the Porsche sports car.

To date, the reputation of the 917 is legendary. Therefore, 50 international motor sports experts from the famous British trade magazine “Motor Sport” nominated the 917 as the “greatest racing car in history”. All in all, Porsche built 65 units of the 917: 44 sports cars as short-tail and long-tail coupés, two PA Spyders as well as 19 sports cars as CanAm and Interseries Spyders with up to 1,400 HP turbo engines. Seven of the most important 917 models – among them the Le Mans victory cars from 1970 and 1971 and the 917/30 Spyder – are currently on exhibit in the new Porsche Museum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen.

The Track Committee. Le Mans 24 Hours - Two Porsche RS Spyder to compete

Stuttgart - February 26 - The successful Porsche RS Spyder customer project heads into the next phase. Two teams will again field a Porsche RS Spyder each at the Le Mans 24 hour race (13-14 June). The NAVI from and the Essex squad from Denmark are eager to repeat the double victory of the RS Spyder in the LMP2 class last year. Porsche works drivers (Germany) and (France) support the teams in their campaign.

Maassen (39), who already piloted a RS Sypder last year in Le Mans, will contest the event for the NAVI Team Goh. His team mates are the experienced (Japan) and youngster Keisuke Kunimoto (Japan). Ara (34) won the overall classification in Le Mans back in 2004 with the Goh team, whilst the 20-year-old Formula 3 pilot, Kunimoto, contests the endurance classic at La Sarthe for the first time this year. The team’s Porsche RS Spyder is the winning car from last year that the Japanese outfit obtained from Van Merksteijn Motorsport. With the regulations requiring a substantial downsizing of the air-restrictors, the 3.4- now delivers 440 hp instead of 476. Moreover, the rear wing and the underbody have been modified to conform to the regulation changes. is the team’s tyre partner.

Emmanuel Collard (37) joins up with (Denmark, 30) and Kristian Poulsen (Denmark, 33) to drive for the Essex team. The squad, who secured second place in the LMP2 classification of the 24 hour event in 2008, will race Michelin tyres for the first time. Both squads will conduct tests at the second round of the Le Mans Series in Spa on 10 May.

”I’m very pleased that, with Goh and Essex, we have two highly professional customer teams contest- ing Le Mans with a Porsche RS Spyder,” says Porsche’s Head of Motorsport, Hartmut Kristen. “Set- ting the quickest lap times of all LMP2 cars last year, the vehicle underlined its reliability and had the best efficiency of all participating sports prototypes. We have modified the cars to comply with the new technical regulations and I’m sure that both RS Spyder will again be very competitive in the LMP2 class. 17 Calendar of Mid-Ohio PCA Events 2009 Events ! 21 Short Shifter s Schreiben

By Dave Hayden, president

I often open this column with comments about the weather and/or season. So, let’s not change. This is the last day of skiing at Snow Trails; it is time to put away my winter toys; it is time to think about those springtime activities that occupy so much of my time. No, not the grass mowing, not the golf, but rather THE PORSCHE and all that go with that seven letter, two-syllable word.

If you are like me, it is now time wake up that hibernating beast from its long (and cold) winter nap. Have you ever given much thought to what is the best way? Several years ago I invested in one of those trickle chargers that maintain the battery, but only after ruining two very expensive factory batteries due to discharging from long inactivity. Those chargers are really a very good investment. I’m currently on the fourth year for this battery and there is no indication that it is aging.

In reading someone’s column recently I gleamed a few new ideas. First, we should carefully go through the entire car looking for remnants of those little four-legged tagalongs that take up residence in our stored cars. Of particular concern are nests that they build on top of the engine inside the ducting. These nests can reduce critical engine cooling and block off oil coolers. I know! This happened to me!

A few more items you should address before that maiden voyage include: reduce the air pressure to manufacturer’s recommendations (You did increase that pressure to 45psi during storage to help keep the tires round, didn’t you?); thoroughly check for any varmint damage, like frayed wiring; reconnect the battery cables and use a good anti-corrosion grease (You did disconnect the battery during storage?); check all fluids; if you are going to do any “spirited driving” please change the brake fluid (You do this each year, right?); and if you changed the oil and filter just before storage, you should be ready to fire her up and go for a drive.

Speaking of spring and Porsche activities, you should be aware of several changes in MORPCA driving events. For the first time we are offering integrated efforts among our autocross and driving education folks to acquaint drivers with the wide world of performance driving. If you are new to Porsches, or new to performance driving, or want to learn more about performance driving, you have come to the right place.

All will start with technical clinics at our Porsche dealers, Byers and MAG, in April and May. Here you can have your car professionally inspected (free of charge) in preparation for daily driving or driving events. Please note, that if you are planning on attending driver education events, the car must be inspected within two weeks of the event, and there is a special inspection form available for downloading from our web site. Watch DOS and e-mail blasts for more information on these clinics. There is more to this event than just car inspections. You will be pleasantly surprised.

There will be at least four autocross events this year starting in June. This is a good place to start your perfor- mance driving. If you are new to autocrossing, don’t fret. We have many experienced drivers and instructors who are eager to help you. Remember, the club is about people. There is very little cost associated with

autocrossing. You need an approved helmet. The club has several loaners available. The only other cost is the entry fee and that is usually well under $50. That is a lot of fun for just a few bucks!

The next step is a big one: driver education (DE). Your car must pass an in depth inspection performed by a licensed mechanic. We have several in the Columbus area. The cost is significant. The entry fees are usually at least $300 for a two-day event. This is where many aspiring drivers stop short due in part to the financial commitment; the unknown of driving on a racetrack; the increased speed; etc.

This is where the “Taste of the Track” comes in. We are offering an opportunity for prospective track drivers to start this process a step at a time. You might say “getting your feet wet.” For a very low cost, you can come to the track and experience the technical inspection of cars, attend classroom sessions on learning how to drive on a closed course (race course), experience on track driving (at speed) with an instructor in his car (you won’t be driving at this point), and socialize with other drivers and instructors. Remember, for the “Taste of the Track”, you do not need a car.

If the “Taste” turns you on, and you think you are ready, we will try to work out an abbreviated schedule so you can gain some track time too. Sounds good doesn’t it. The “Taste of the Track” will be offered at our July DE at Putnam Park and at the August DE at Mid-Ohio. We may also be able to offer “Taste of the Track” at our new October DE at Bluegrass Motorsports Park. If you have any questions, please contact any of our driving event chairpersons or Frank Todaro the driving event committee chairperson.

I’ve said this before, but WOW this is going to be a great driving season. Don’t forget our Club Race in May. This year’s event will feature a Friday test and tune with races on Saturday and Sunday. A full three-day event at one of the best tracks in America – Mid-Ohio!

Don’t forget our monthly meetings. They are always on the first Wednesday of the month at the King Avenue 5, on King Avenue, in Columbus. Our next meeting will be April 1.

26 April 2009 HELP WANTED

Low pay, no benefits and long hours. However, you will have opportunities to meet and work with some of the finest people in PCA. Perhaps, the pay is non-existent, but there are other rewards. Here is your chance to take control and project your creativity. We have had the current newsletter format for many years. Is it time for a change? The time commitment is not long, strenuous or tedious. Rather it’s a set your own hours, about a one day commitment each month to pull the articles together, format and prepare the newsletter for copy. You can work from home - no long commute required; nor a reason to buy a new wardrobe. There is no dress code; you can wear weekend causal or nothing at all.

Do I have your attention yet? We are in need of a newsletter editor or editors (this can be a shared task). Tom Stein is ready to pass the newsletter job on. His daytime job responsibilities (yea, the job that puts money in his pocket) are straining his free time activities. Tom will work with the new editor(s) during the transition period. He will not dump this job upon you without support. If someone does not step forward and take over this task, it won’t be long before we may not have a monthly newsletter! (see other article regarding newsletter frquency)

Are you ready to be the next newsletter editor? Contact Tom Stein or any Board member. We will be happy to discuss this very important responsibility with you.

Marsha Hayden has asked for some time now to be replaced as the Charity Chair. As chairperson you pick four or five members for your committee. The committee’s responsibilities include soliciting requests from charities, interviewing potential agencies and making recommendation to the Board. Some of the current members can continue on the committee.

Do you have a big heart? Are you looking for a worthwhile outlet for some free time? If so, please contact us. Maybe you just want to help rather than take over the chair. We need committee members too.

Also, several of us see a sizeable gap in technical support. We need someone to take leadership and set up tech sessions for our membership. I’ve heard many times from our membership that they wish we would have tech sessions so they could learn more about the technical or mechanical aspects of their vehicles. Just this past week, I met a prospective member (he will join) who wants tech sessions. This is his first Porsche, a 1999 911 cabriolet. Within our membership we have at least six (6) members who have or work in shops. I see an easy way to get free advertising for sponsoring a tech session! Again, if you are interested in hosting a tech event or know of individuals, shops or vendors who will, please let your Board members know.

For an organization to thrive, to grow and to blossom, we must furnish fresh nutrients to the organization. We cannot continue to rely on the same people year after year. We do burn out. Those of you who want to become active or more active please do so. We can always use volunteers, event hosts/chairs and chairpersons. We need someone to assume the Charity chair; take over or at least help with the newsletter; and help with establishing technical sessions for our membership. Won’t you please come forward and help.

27 The Cayenne S Hybrid will deliver the power of a V8 and the efficiency of a four-cylinder

ATLANTA – February 20, 2009 —— Porsche AG, the Stuttgart, Germany-based high-performance car and SUV manufacturer, shared more information about its Cayenne S Hybrid, which will debut next year. Using a parallel full hybrid design with the electric motor between the combustion engine and the , Porsche engi- neers have been able to drive at speeds up to 86 mph without at all using the combustion engine.

This engineering achievement allows the Cayenne S Hybrid to roll freely – or ‘coast’ — at highway speeds without the combustion engine on, greatly minimizing engine emissions and fossil fuel consumption. This differs from current hybrid concepts that deliver benefits mainly in city traffic. Porsche, in cooperation with , opted for the parallel full hybrid design as it also significantly improves acceleration, a concept that matches the company’s philosophy of offering outstanding performance and efficiency. It also fits in the current Cayenne design with minimal alterations and without affecting interior space or luggage capacity.

When it comes to market in 2010, the Cayenne S Hybrid is expected to emit some 20 percent less C02 than comparable combustion engine vehicles with similar power output. Covering a 0-to-100 km/h sprint in just 6.8 seconds, it earns its ‘S’ designation by delivering V8 performance and four-cylinder efficiency, all while complying with the Ultra Low Emission Vehicle II (ULEVII) emission standards.

The Cayenne S Hybrid uses a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine with Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), 333 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque from 2,900 to 5,300 rpm. It is mated with 52-horsepower three-phase synchronous electric motor that produces up to 221 lb-ft of torque and also acts as an alternator, and the com- bined power units are joined to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Also on board is a 154-lb. no-mainte- nance 38 kW nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery. Measuring 13.7" x 24.9" x 11.5", it fits in the spare well, thus not compromising luggage capacity.

The Hybrid Manager is the Cayenne S Hybrid’s “Heart”

The heart of these technologies is the powerful Hybrid Manager, which requires some 20,000 data parameters to operate (compared to a conventional engine control unit that operates on less than one-third of the data). Since a parallel full hybrid operates in three classic hybrid modes – power generated by the combustion engine and electric motor, power generated by the combustion engine only, and power generated by the electric motor only – the Hybrid Manager’s main function is to seamlessly coordinate these modes to deliver optimal performance and efficiency.

With a clutch being the key connection between the combustion engine and the electric motor, the Hybrid Manager has the tough job of providing smooth but quick switching among the three hybrid modes without delay or a noticeable transition felt by the driver and passengers. For example, the Cayenne S Hybrid can motor along solely on electric power for up to 1.2 miles with the combustion engine off, and the Hybrid Manager will fire up the engine as soon as the driver presses the accelerator, increase engine speed appropriately and engage the clutch to transfer power to the transmission without the driver or passengers noticing what is happening. And, it does this within just 300 milliseconds.

28 April 2009 Continued from page 28

When driving with just the combustion engine, the Hybrid Manager also will ensure the engine is operating as efficiently as possible in reference to its load. It switches the electric motor to an alternator mode, so the fuel consumed by the combustion engine not only efficiently powers the Cayenne but also generates electricity that can be ‘parked’ in the NiMH battery. Finally, when the driver presses the brake pedal, the Hybrid Manager feeds as much energy as possible from the electric motor (again running as an alternator) to the battery.

The Cayenne S Hybrid also has electrically driven ancillary components such as the air conditioning compressor and the power steering pump.

Unlike conventional Cayenne SUVs, the Cayenne S Hybrid uses an eight-speed automatic unit. Porsche engineers added to the conventional transmission oil pump a new electrical drive pump to shift gears smoothly and efficiently also in electric mode. Top speed comes in sixth gear, and the two higher gears serve to further reduce engine speed to enhance fuel economy. Eighth gear, for example, enables the driver to ‘coast’ along without the combustion engine at speeds up to 86 mph.

Porsche expects the Cayenne S Hybrid to consume less than nine liters of fuel per 100 kilometers in the New European Driving Cycle. EPA fuel economy figures are not yet available.

A similar hybrid system will find its way into the new ® four-door gran turismo sometime following Porsche’s fourth model line debut in late summer 2009.
