Mak. Dr Tommis welcomed all awardees and guests and shared a few statistics from this year as listed below: 1. 352 students from 77 local schools were accepted for the competition; 2. 31% increase in the number of students when compared with last year; 3. 45% increase in the number of participating schools when compared with last year. 4. 24 students (including one primary-aged student) who scored with First Class Honour; 5. 66 students who scored with Second Class Honour; and 6. 91 students (including 4 primary-aged students) who scored with Third Class Honour. The competition was keen for this year with 3 schools achieving the same score and being awarded the Championship title. The individual and team awards list can be found in the Appendix below. Two of the IJSO 2009 Hong Kong team members, Tsai King Yung from Cheung Sha Wan Catholic Secondary School and Wong Hok Hei from Queen’s College shared their valuable experience at the end of the ceremony. Wong Hok Hei reflected that “The IJSO Student Training Programme, especially for the experimental sessions, equipped us well for the IJSO. Also, the Affective Education Programme (formerly provided by the EDB but now by the HKAGE) had polished our social skills. We also had a better understanding of ourselves and recognize our personal goal which has enhanced our personal growth”. The IJSO-HK screening aims at identifying scientifically gifted students at junior secondary levels for training in advanced science subject knowledge. All of the First and Second Class Honour awardees have been invited to participate in a series of structured IJSO Student Training Programmes. Six outstanding students of the programme will be selected to represent Hong Kong to participate in the 9th IJSO to be held in early December 2012. Succession with Pride: Munsang’s 90th Anniversary in Pictures Succession with Pride: Munsang’s 90 th Anniversary in Pictures Front cover designed by Yeung Sin Tung (F.3B) Back cover designed by Kan Po Shuen (F.4B) Advisors: Ms Lam Mau, Ms Wong Ling, Ms Wong Kam Hung, Mr Chow Chi Shing 103 Foreword Succession with Pride: Munsang’s 90th Anniversary in Pictures The School Year 2015 -2016 marks a milestone for Munsangnites: We are proud to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of our School, which has already carved a niche among the paragons in the education sector for our history that lasts almost a century in Hong Kong. The last 90 years are brimming with excitement, turbulence and glory for us: We navigated uncharted waters in our early days on Kai Tack Bund, managed to weather storms and remain robust during the Japanese Occupation in 1930s – 40s, and we were, and still continue to be so, dynamic and resilient enough to scale new heights not only in Kowloon City, but also across the territory, and finally on a world scale: It is our mission to sharpen students’ global visions. In this brochure, you are going to find snapshots that represent the pride we take in the glorious Munsang history, and each celebratory event symbolises our determination to render our utmost to serve our students, our School, and the Hong Kong community. Each of the programmes, in pictures, speaks volumes about our resolve to keep Munsang shining as ever from 1926 onwards. We are custodians of the past, and architects of the future! 1 Contents Kick-off Ceremony ..................................................................................................................................

  • Critical Genre Analysis of Principal's Remarks 283
Linguistica Silesiana nr 42, 2021 ISSN 0208-4228 DOI: 10.24425/linsi.2021.137241 CHI WUI NG The Chinese University of Hong Kong [email protected] CRITICAL GENRE ANALYSIS OF PRINCIPAL’S REMARKS Critical Genre Analysis (CGA) is a theory of interdiscursive performance taking a multi-perspective approach to account for professional practice, demystify the interdiscursive nature of professional genres, account for professional identities, understand professional communication as interdiscursive performance, and provide evidence-based pedagogical insights. The present paper capitalizes upon CGA to analyze the genre of Principal’s Remarks, which originate from a speech delivered by the school principal on the anniversary and annual speech day of a school to report the development of the school. A total of 12 Principal’s Remarks of an aided Christian secondary school in Hong Kong, China released in 12 consecutive years were incorporated into the corpus for analysis. The genre was analyzed at four levels, which conceptualize discourse as text, genre, professional practice, and social practice respectively. The study exemplifies how CGA can be capitalized upon to analyze an unfamiliar genre in a multi‑perspective fashion. Keywords: Critical Genre Analysis, Principal’s Remarks, genre, discourse analysis, genre analysis, educational discourse 1. Introduction Being a fluid terminology, by no means can the concept of ‘genre’ be defined unanimously. For all a widespread conceptualization of genre as “a class of communicative events” (Swales 1990) or “a conventional category of discourse based in large‑scale typification of rhetorical action” (Miller 1984: 163), which denotes an inextricable connection between genre and rhetorical action, the interconnection between genre and professional practice can be conceptualized by means of multiple perspectives.
