Naturforsch. 64 c, 644 – 649 (2009); received May 1/June 12, 2009 In continuation of our interest in phytochemical screening of the Egyptian fl ora for poten- tial drugs, the reinvestigation of the methanolic extract of the roots of Solanum diphyllum, which grows naturally in the south of Egypt and is recorded as new to the Egyptian fl ora, af- forded an interesting, highly cytotoxic compound, named 3-O-(β-D-glucopyranosyl) etioline [(25S)-22,26-epimino-3β-(β-D-glucopyranosyloxy) cholesta-5,22(N)-dien-16α-ol]. The chemi- cal structure of this compound was determined by comprehensive NMR studies, including DEPT, COSY, HMQC, and MS. The compound exhibited high cytotoxic effects against the cervical cancer cell line, Hela cells, with an IC50 value of 150 µg/mL. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Solanum diphyllum L., a tropical American species, is added here to the flora of Southern India from Bangalore, Karnataka. Its occurrence in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu is discussed. A detailed description and photograph of the species are provided for easy identification. Keywords: Solanum diphyllum, Solanaceae, New Record, Southern India Introduction Solanum L., a subcosmopolitan genus, with 1250 into petiole, entire at margins, acute or obtuse at species is distributed mostly in tropical and apex, 1–10 × 0.5–4 cm; lateral nerves 4–7 on either subtropical regions of the world, especially in side, faintly minute-hairy; petioles to 5 mm long. Americas (Mabberley, 2008). In India, the genus is Inflorescence a racemose fascicle, c. 10-flowered; represented by 48 species (Reema Kumari, 2004). peduncles to 7 mm long. Calyx cupular, 1.5–2 Earlier, while revising the Indian Solanaceae, × 2–2.5 mm, minutely pubescent, 5-lobed; lobes specimens of a Solanum sp. were collected from broadly triangular, acute, c. 0.5 × 0.8 mm, hirsute; two different localities in Pune, Maharashtra and pedicels to 1 cm long. Corolla stellate, 5–8 mm determined as S. diphyllum L. after seeing the type across, creamy white, 5-lobed; lobes equal, elliptic and comparing with authentic specimens (Reema or linear-ovate, acute, 4–5 × 2.5–3 mm, incurved, Kumari, 2004). More recently, specimens were also hyaline; tube 1–2 mm long. -

Morbi District Is Located in the Saurashtra Region of Indian State of Gujarat
Morbi District is located in the Saurashtra region of Indian state of Gujarat. It was formed on August 15, 2013, on the 67th Independence Day of India. The district has 5 talukas - Morbi, Maliya, Tankara, Wankaner and Halvad. This district is surrounded by Kutch district to the north, Surendranagar district to the east, Rajkot district to the south and Jamnagar district to the west. Morbi, also known as Morvi is the administrative headquarters of Morbi district, which literally means City of Peacocks. The town of Morbi is endowed not only with great natural beauty, but it is also famous for its colorful history and rich cultural heritage. The town of Morbi is situated on the bank of Machchhu River, 35 km from the sea and 60 km from Rajkot. The city-state of Morbi and much of the building heritage and town planning, are attributed to the administration of Sir Lakhdhiraji Waghji, who ruled from 1922 to 1948. The Machchhu dam failure or Morbi disaster was a dam-related flood disaster which occurred on 11 August 1979. Morbi has long been a center for trade and industry. In the beginning, the economy of the town was mainly dependent on ceramic and clock manufacturing industry. Today, the area has also become a growing hub for paper mills and other ancillary industries such as packaging industry, export houses etc. Together, they have created a vibrant and sustainable economy in this region. After the bifurcation from Rajkot District Court, Morbi District Court started its functioning from 02/10/2016 and presently, there are 2 Appellate Courts, 1 Family Court, 1 Labour Court, 5 Senior Division Courts/Chief Courts & 7 Junior Division Courts, are functioning in Morbi District. -

Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council's 2005 List of Invasive Species Purpose of the List: To focus attention on -- ¾ the adverse effects exotic pest plants have on Florida's biodiversity and plant communities, ¾ the habitat losses from exotic pest plant infestations, ¾ the impacts on endangered species via habitat loss and alteration, ¾ the need to prevent habitat losses through pest-plant management, ¾ the socio-economic impacts of these plants (e.g., increased wildfires in certain areas), ¾ changes in the seriousness of different pest plants over time, ¾ the need to provide information that helps managers set priorities for control programs. DEFINITIONS: Exotic—a species introduced to Florida, purposefully or accidentally, from a natural range outside of Florida. Native—a species whose natural range included Florida at the time of European contact (1500 AD). Naturalized exotic—an exotic that sustains itself outside cultivation (it is still exotic; it has not "become" native). Invasive exotic—an exotic that not only has naturalized but is expanding on its own in Florida plant communities. Abbreviations used: for "Gov. list": P = Prohibited by Fla. Stems sometimes prickly, rarely thorny; hairs simple, branched, or stellate, sometimes glandular. Leaves alternate, solitary or paired, simple or pinnately compound, without stipules; leaf blade entire, dentate, lobed, or divided. Inflorescences terminal, overtopped by continuing axes, appearing axillary, extra-axillary, or leaf opposed, often apparently umbellate, racemose, paniculate, clustered, or solitary flowers, rarely true cymes, sometimes bracteate. Flowers mostly bisexual, usually regular, 5-merous, rarely 4- or 6–9-merous. Calyx mostly lobed. Petals united. Stamens as many as corolla lobes and alternate with them, inserted within corolla, all alike or 1 or more reduced; anthers dehiscing longitudinally or by apical pores. Ovary 2–5-locular; placentation mostly axile; ovules usually numerous. Style 1. Fruiting calyx often becoming enlarged, mostly persistent. Fruit a berry or capsule. Seeds with copious endosperm; embryo mostly curved. About 95 genera with 2300 species: best represented in western tropical America, widespread in temperate and tropical regions; 20 genera (ten introduced) and 101 species in China.
