Psalm 56:3 This is an unprecedented time in our lives and the Church has had to take an unprecedented step to face the Coronavirus crisis. We never though when we started our ministry that we would ever see a suspension of public Masses. The last known time that this happened would have been during the Reformation. The decision of our Bishops has not been taken lightly; the ongoing developments in Italy highlight the dangers and ferocity of the. Things are uncertain; we do not know how long this will last but now, more than ever, we are called to trust that Almighty God is watching over us and calling us to a deeper faith. As Cardinal Nichols said in his message this week: ‘we are now called to take deeper root and pray in new ways’. After all, the Lord himself reminds us that “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). We may not have the usual access to the Sacraments, but we do have access to the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. If our faith is as small as a mustard seed, great things can and do happen; the saints are examples of this. Let us turn to all the saints and seek their help, remembering especially the great saints to whom our churches are dedicated. As a team, we are here and will continue to be here for you. We are planning a scheme of prayer and worship “in new ways” for you all. This begins with a regular online ‘stream’ of the Masses we are called to celebrate in private on a daily basis and the Mass intentions you have submitted, and continue to submit, will be offered. We will continue to offer the Sacrifice of the Mass daily – 2 priests will concelebrate the daily live stream and the others offer individual Masses in private. On Sundays, FOUR Masses will be live streamed – 3 in English (9.00am, 11.00am & 6.00pm) and 1 in Polish (1.00pm). All live events will be publicised on this newsletter format and online on the homepage of our parish website. The stream itself is available on both our Facebook page (facebook.com/CatholicNewport) and the parish website. Additionally, some parishioners have come up with the brilliant idea of spiritually coming together by praying the Rosary at home at 11:30am every Thursday and invite you to undertake this great act of devotion. We as clergy have decided to join this act and will live stream our devotion. Over the course of the coming weeks, as we gain a better understanding of the path we must walk, we will offer other spiritual programmes for us to join together. Above all, put on trust and do not be afraid for the Lord is near at hand! And if you are self-isolating please keep us informed. God bless you all! Frs Michael, Robert, Laurence, Roman & Peter. Pastoral Care of the Sick Emergency sick calls: 07805 696474 Given the present situation with the Coronavirus pandemic, all regular Pastoral visitations have ceased for the protection of the sick and housebound. Hospitals have begun asking chaplains not to make visits unless it is an emergency or end of life situation. Therefore, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are asked to suspend their visits to the sick and housebound until further notice. However, we do ask that you make regular contact with them over the telephone and pray together. Please also keep us informed of their needs. In emergency and end of life situations, the priests remain on-call using the emergency sick call number above. We are praying daily for you and will support you as best we can in other means.
