We still have 8 more events to organise for 2017 and we are very excited because 3 of the events are new for this year. You will find details on pages 5, 9 and 10. The first of our events is a quiz which will be on Friday 17th March. As well as the new events we like to hang on to the tried and tested and our quiz certainly comes under that umbrella with our amazing quizmasters Hilary and Russell. The quiz is both fun and competitive and worth winning, the first prize is £30 and second prize is £15. We are also looking forward to announcing our next target. We have continued to do exceptionally well with our raffle donations and in the last few months we have had more interest and support from businesses which we are extremely grateful for, not forgetting those that manage to secure the We did it!! Clearly the content would have been somewhat different but the underlying messages are on the same theme. Our enforced closure after afternoon groups on Friday, 13th March has, I know, been disruptive for everybody. It is, after all, an important part of our weekly routine to attend U3A at Shaftesbury Street or to meet as walkers or cyclists and I am sure we are all feeling a great sense of loss. This magazine will, I hope, have filled at least a small gap and the online activities of the groups that are able to do something is, I am sure, a boon to their participants. I still hear of new initiatives and any further ideas will be most welcome! Desert Island Times is being circulated beyond Newport U3A – I send each edition to members in Caldicot, Torfaen, Usk, Dartmouth and Odiham (Surrey) U3As and to others who are not currently members of any U3A. -

These plant communities are often endangered by inappropriate hydrological interventions or management practices. All available vegetation plots representing this vegetation type were collected, organized in a database, and numerically elaborated. Dioecy is a rare breeding system among the angiosperms (approximately 6% of all flowering plants) while hermaphroditism (having male and female function present within each flower) is predominant. Dioecious angiosperms may be rare because the transitions to dioecy have been recent or because dioecious angiosperms experience decreased diversification rates (speciation minus extinction) compared to plants with other breeding systems. -

ABSTRACT Blister beetles of the families Meloidae and Oedemeridae (Order Coleoptera, Insecta) release yellow oily droplets of haemolymph from their leg (and may be antennal) joints as a defensive measure when disturbed. The active ingredient in this exudation is cantharidin (CA). Historically, CA has been used as a chemotherapeutic agent in the traditional medicine among Asian, African and European peoples. CA, as a natural or chemically synthesized compound, is used in the modern medicine to treat various diseases. Norcantharidin is the most famous among the synthesized CA analogues and derivatives. CA and its analogues have been applied for some dermatological cases such as warts, verruca vulgaris, corn, molluscum contagiosum and leishmaniasis. In oncology, CA and its analogues exhibit promising therapeutic effects because they induce apop tosis of human cancer cells of hepatoma, colo-rectal carcinoma, oral carcinoma, esophageal carcinoma, leukemia, bladder carcinoma, melanoma, etc. In addition, CA and its analogues have been experimentally and clinically investigated for some other diseases such as heart failure, hepatitis, neurological disorders and innate immune system. Furthermore, CA and CA -related compounds, such as Endothall and palasonin, act as a potential source of antimalarials and antihelminthics. The multi-drug resistance is one of the major obstacles in the treatment of human cancer. CA and some of its analogues have been studied as promising agent to overcome this problem. -

As another recording season draws to a close for many species groups, it is in- teresting to look back at the summer’s finds throughout south east Wales. Whether it is a Welsh first (Geranium Bronze in Creigiau, pg 8), a phenomenon rarely seen in our temperate climate (Bioluminescent plankton in Wales, pg 9) or just taking the time to study something often overlooked (Slime Moulds, pg 18), the joys of discovery through wildlife recording is evident throughout this issue. It is also great to learn of the efforts being made to preserve and enhance biodi- versity by organisations such as Porthkerry Wildlife Group (Porthkerry Country Park Wildflower Meadow Creation, pg 4) and Buglife (Wales Threatened Bee Re- port, pg 22). Many thanks to all who contributed to the newsletter. I hope this newsletter will be an inspiration to all our recorders as the nights draw in and your backlog of summer recording beckons!
