D.C. 20560 www.aaa.si.edu/askus Transcript Interview EG:: EUGENIE GERSHOY MM:: MARY McCHESNEY RM:: ROBERT McCHESNEY (Miss Gershoy was on the WPA sculpture project in New York City) MM:: First I'd like to ask you, Johnny -- isn't that your nickname? -- where were you born? EG:: In Russia. MM:: What year? EG:: 1901. MM:: What town were you born in? EG:: In a wonderful little place called Krivoi Rog. It's a metal-lurgical center that was very important in the second World War. A great deal of fighting went on there, and it figured very largely in the German-Russian campaign. MM:: When did you come to the United States? EG:: 1903. MM:: You were saying that you came to the United States in 1903, so you were only two years old. EG:: Yes. MM:: Where did you receive your art training? EG:: Very briefly, I had a couple of scholarships to the Art Students League. MM:: In New York City? EG:: Yes. And then I got married and went to Woodstock and worked there by myself. John Flanagan, the sculptor, was a great friend of ours, and he was up there, too. I was very much influenced by him. He used to take the boulders in the field and make his sculptures of them, and also the wood that was indigenous to the neighborhood -- ash, pine, apple wood, and so forth. -

Nevertheless, expositions are illustrative of man’s progress and development. There is hardly a more striking example of this fact than the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition held at Omaha, Nebraska, in 1898. * Since the frontier had been pronounced as closed only a few years before, it was fitting that the trans-Mississippi region display its wealth as well as its capabilities. Omaha was fortunate to be the host city for an exposition that symbolized the progress of the West. The city benefited greatly, being infused with an economic and spiritual uplift at a most opportune time. The primary objective of this thesis is to present a comprehensive description of the Trans- Mississippi Exposition, In doing so, however, I will also analyze its success and attempt to place it in its historical perspective. CONFIDENTIAL: TRUSTEES CORCORAN GALLERY OF ART CORCORAN SCHOOL OF ART MARCH/APRIL 1974 MONTHLY REPORTS Director/Dean's Report Gallery: Curatorial Registrar Education Special Education Membership Admissions Maintenance/Security Gallery Shop Public Relations Events Finance Conservation School: Assistant Dean/Academic Studies Registrar Corcoran Report March/April 1974 During the months of March and April the Corcoran Gallery of Art continued to be most active, with many exhibitions and events. On Friday, March 15, a preview was held of exhibitions organized as a "Tribute to the Arts of the America's". The Tribute was organized by the Washington Performing Arts Society, and the Corcoran exhibitions played a vital role in the celebration of the arts in the America's. The preview was held in conjunction with openings at the Pan American Union and the Renwick Ga-llery. Many members, guests and others attended the opening at the Corcoran. The sculpture of Edgar Negret was well received, being sculpture of major international importance. The Argentine Embassy helped present the paintings of Raquel Forner, while the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico presented prints from the San Juan Biennial and Puerto Rican photographs. Canada was represented by the prints of William Featherston. The paintings of Elliott Thompson were previewed later in the month on Wednesday, March 27. Elliott Thompson is increasingly well known as a Washington painter and the work shown represented his development in painting from 1967-1974. Elliott Thompson teaches at the Corcoran School of Art. Events were held in March to coincide with "The Tribute to the Arts in the America's", including lunchtime talks and a reception by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in conjunction with the Puerto Rican photography of'Dos Mundos'.' The Lecture Committee of the Women's Committee sponsored an evening of "American Writing of the 1930's". -

Prior to publication, please confirm dates, titles, and other information with the Seattle Art Museum public relations office. 2 SEATTLE ART MUSEUM – NOW ON VIEW Victorian Radicals: From the Pre-Raphaelites to the Arts and Crafts Movement Seattle Art Museum June 13–September 8, 2019 As industrialization brought sweeping and dehumanizing changes to 19th- century England, a small group of artists reasserted the value of the handmade. Calling themselves the Pre-Raphaelites, they turned to the unlikely model of medieval European craftsmen as a way of moving forward. Victorian Radicals presents an unprecedented 145 paintings, drawings, books, sculpture, textiles, and decorative arts—many never before exhibited outside of the UK—by the major artists associated with this rebellious brotherhood. Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, Edward Burne-Jones, and William Morris dubbed themselves the Pre-Raphaelites in reaction to the Royal Academy of Arts, whose methods to artmaking they regarded to be as formulaic as industrial methods of production. This movement had broad implications and inspired a wide range of industries to rebel against sterility and strive to connect art to everyday life. The Pre-Raphaelites and members of the later Arts & Crafts movement operated from a moral commitment to honest labor, the handmade object, and the ability of art to heal a society dehumanized by industry and mechanization. The works of the men and women presented in the exhibition illustrate a spectrum of avant-garde practices of the Victorian period and demonstrate Britain’s first modern art response to industrialization.
