Alfred Sandell Handledare: Carina Lidström Abstract: Alfred Sandell: Folksagans övernaturliga väsen i Yamazaki Kores' manga "The Ancient Magus' Bride" - folkloresque eller folklore? (2017). Självständigt Arbete, Svenska Va, 15 högskolepoäng. Institutionen för humaniora, utbildnings- och samhällsvetenskap [Material:] Uppsatsen analyserar och jämför hur övernaturliga väsen gestaltas i Yamazaki Kores mangaserie The Ancient Magus' Bride och i några av de vanligast förekommande folksagorna. [Syfte:] Syftet med analysen är att undersöka vilka sammanhang dessa övernaturliga väsen ursprungligen ingått i, hur de beskrivs i sitt gamla sammanhang och sin nya kontext, samt vilken funktion de har i sin gamla respektive nya kontext. Fokus är att ställa Yamazakis' serie mot folksagorna i det här avseendet. Dessutom undersöks på vilket sätt Yamazaki använder sig av motiv från välkända folksagor för att skapa en populärkulturell produkt som kan anspela på folklore, och således diskuteras vad som skiljer mellan en sådan populärkulturell produkt och folklore. Vidare har uppsatsen även ett didaktiskt syfte där mangans legitimitet och användningsområde i skolan diskuteras. [Teori/metod:] Komparativ litterär analysmetod. Med fokus på beskrivning, sammanhang och funktion jämförs motiv kring ett antal övernaturliga väsen i Yamazakis serie, samt i olika folksagor. Med hjälp av analysens resultat, och Michael Dylan Fosters begrepp "the folkloresque" diskuteras sedan på vilket sätt Yamazaki anspelar på folklore med sina motiv, samt vad som slutligen skiljer hennes serie från folklore. [Resultat:] Yamazaki integrerar motiv från flera olika folksagor för att gestalta sina övernaturliga väsen i beskrivningar och sammanhang. I sammanhanget tillskriver hon sina väsen en ny funktion för att de ska kunna bära hennes berättelse framåt. Sammanhang och funktion förändras och väsendet blir inte det samma som i folksagorna, utan något som "verkar" vara det. De motiv Yamazaki använder är förnyade men trots allt anspelar de på folklore. Motiven representerar, eller gör en avbild av hennes egna idéer, föreställningar och värderingar kring folklore. Serien ger uttryck för författarens tankar kring folklore, och inte "riktig" folklore. Serien är således en representation eller avbild, som befinner sig nära folklore utan att vara det. Manga kan utveckla både läs- och skrivförmåga och kan användas likt skönlitteratur i en skolsituation. Manga öppnar upp för genrediskussioner, och diskussioner kring andra kulturers erfarenheter, tankar, föreställningsvärldar och livsvillkor. Det innebär att efternamnet kommer före förnamnet. Exempelvis kommer Osamu Tezuka att benämnas som Tezuka Osamu i löpande text och sedan bara som Tezuka. Japanska, brittiska och irländska begrepp skrives som de står i böckerna, och makroner kommer att användas för att indikera långa vokalljud. Begrepp kommer också att kursiveras när de används första gången. De flesta begrepp förklaras antingen löpande genom uppsatsen eller i en kort parantes. Vissa begrepp förklaras också i ordlistor som tillkommer som bilaga. De väsen som nämns i uppsatsen kommer också att kursiveras första gången. Slutligen tillkommer ett litet bestiarium som bilaga där alla övernaturliga väsen som nämns i uppsatsen får en kort beskrivning.     Dear Westbrook Senior Center Participants, A year ago this month (if you can believe it), we were directed by the Governor to shut the doors to the Senior Center and pause our daily routine as we knew it. Now, as all of you are aware, the DPH and the State of Connecticut started vaccinating Senior Citizens for COVID-19 on January 18, 2021. For many, the process for vaccine registration was difficult and frustrating; but as of March 1, over 75% of Seniors in our area have received their first COVID-19 vaccine dose! With so many seniors getting vaccinated and the State’s decreasing COVID positivity rate, I will be working with Zachary Faiella-Town of Westbrook Health Director to develop a re-opening plan for the Westbrook Senior Center. When re-opening the Senior Center, a lot of factors have to be considered. This is why we have not yet released a date. When we are ready to open, all of you will receive notice of the date and guidelines for program participation. The guidelines will explain all of the changes to programs, changes to the Center and new rules we have to abide by to remain open. Although it will be structured differently, our mission is still the same: “to improve the quality of life for Senior Citizens in Westbrook, and our neighboring Shoreline towns and to promote the physical and social well-being of our Senior Community”. The people therefore lived entirely upon the traditions of their forefathers, blended with the new doctrines taught by Christianity; so that the popular belief became, in time, an amalgam of the pagan myths and the Christian legend, and these two elements remain indissolubly united to this day. The world, in fact, is a volume, a serial rather going on for six thousand years, but of which the Irish peasant has scarcely yet turned the first age.

Although there is a significant amount of research on the evolution of the fairy tale into novel length narratives, there is little focused on the use of the folklore of Faerie in fantasy novels. This thesis examines the Faerie-related folkloric themes and motifs to be found in four examples of contemporary young adult fantasy novels: An Earthly Knight, Thomas the Rhymer, Tithe, and The Hunter's Moon. Each of these narratives is rich in Faerie folklore. The authors, Janet McNaughton, Ellen Kushner, Holly Black, and O.R. Melling, have gone beyond the pop-culture image of the fairy and explored the many aspects of Faerie to be found in folklore. In their unique ways, these authors each explore Faerie as a realm full of marvels and contradictions, while remaining true to the nature of Faerie found in folklore. Through an analysis of artworks and material practices, I identify a range of subversive strategies implemented by artists intent on amplifying the voices of marginalised communities. These include alternative modes of listening, seeing and feeling that complicate hegemonic notions of history, genre, representation and subjectivity. The project examines five single-screen, digital artworks that I have created as part of my research, as well as works by seven other artists: John Akomfrah, Clio Barnard, Evan Ifekoya, Mikhail Karikis, Patrick Keiller, Charlotte Prodger and Wu Tsang.     The book of Gods,Goddessess,Heroes and other Characters of Mythology In broad terms mythology is composed of traditional stories about gods, kings, and heroes. Myths often tell about the creation of the world (and about its destruction as well), about the creation of men, and, also, they provide lessons on a moral code by which to live. They were attempts to provide rationale to natural events and to human emotion. Mythological stories generally were passed on orally from generation to succeeding generation. Each tale, embellished and "corrupted" through the re-tellings, was probably a reasoned explanation of the facts as seen by unsophisticated and uneducated eyes. Most scholars today divide the subject into three categories: pure myth (primitive science and primitive religion), heroic saga (primitive history), and folklore (fictional stories).
