Due to excessive human harvesting and loss of suitable habitat of its populations, it has become a potentially threatened species requiring immediate conservation efforts. • Methods and Results: Based on transcriptome data for V. coloratum, 124 primer pairs were randomly selected for initial valida- tion, of which 19 yielded polymorphic microsatellite loci, with two to six alleles per locus. The usefulness of these markers was assessed for 60 individuals representing three populations of V. coloratum. Observed and expected heterozygosity values ranged from 0.033 to 0.833 and 0.032 to 0.672, respectively. Cross-species amplification for 19 loci in the related species V. album was conducted. • Conclusions: The 19 newly developed loci are expected to be useful for studying the population genetics and ecological conser- vation of V. coloratum. The aim of this study is to identify and quantify the active ingredients of the species Viscum album and Allium sativum, in order to provide a complex chemical characterisation, which is necessary for the use of these plants’ extracts as natural ingredients in the pharmaceutical industry. The following methods were used: (1) the plant material was harvested from the west-side of Romania (Europe) in July 2014; (2) it was dried quickly and the main active principles were extracted using ethylic alcohol solution (50%); (3) the quantitative analyses of the flavonoids and polyphenols were performed according to a procedure described in the Romanian Pharmacopoeia. FT-IR results showed that the Viscum album extract had the highest content of polyphenolic compounds, for both flavonoids and polyphenols. This is the reason why it can be concluded that alcoholic extracts of mistletoe must be used as supplements for diabetics who require diets with flavonoids or for patients with cancers, degenerative diseases, and particularly cardiovascular diseases, who need an increased amount of polyphenols.

Taxonomic treatments based on morphology have been hampered by phenotypic plasticity, size reduction of floral parts, and a shortage of taxonomically useful traits. Morphological characters used to differentiate species include the arrangement of flowers on an inflorescence segment (seriation) and the presence/absence and pattern of insertion of cataphylls on the stem. The only trait distinguishing Phoradendron from Dendrophthora Eichler, another New World mistletoe genus with a tropical distribution contained entirely within that of Phoradendron, is the number of anther locules. However, several lines of evidence suggest that neither Phoradendron nor Dendrophthora is monophyletic, although together they form the strongly supported monophyletic tribe Phoradendreae of nearly 360 species. To date, efforts to delineate supraspecific assemblages have been largely unsuccessful, and the only attempt to apply molecular sequence data dates back 16 years. Insights gleaned from that study, which used the ITS region and two partitions of the 26S nuclear rDNA, will be discussed, and new information pertinent to the systematics and biology of Phoradendron will be reviewed. The most numerous hosts of mistletoe were Tilia cordata (24.4%), Acer platanoides (22.7%), and Populus nigra (16.7%). On average, there were more than 10 mistletoe bushes per tree. The mass mistletoe infestations (more than 50 bushes per the tree) were detected for Populus berolinensis, Populus nigra, × and Acer saccharinum. The largest number of infected trees was detected in the green zone (city parks), historical housing estates, and green zone along water bodies. Based on the results of principal component analysis (PCA), the main factors causing the spread of mistletoe on the urban territories are trees’ age and relative air humidity.

In the garden greenhouses were found 183 subspontaneous species and weeds, both from the Romanian flora as well as tropical plants introduced by accident. Thus the total number of wild species rises to 1055, a large number compared to the occupied area. Some rare spontaneous plants and endemic to the Romanian flora (Galium abaujense, Cephalaria radiata, Crocus banaticus) were found. Cultivated species that once migrated from culture, accommodated to environmental conditions and conquered new territories; standing out is the Cyrtomium falcatum fern, once escaped from the greenhouses it continues to develop on their outer walls. Abstract Information on oaks Quercus spp. parasitised by Viscum album L. in Britain that was obtained in a comprehensive review of the literature and records with site visits from 1996 to 1998 has been updated during 2017 and 2018. Currently there are thirteen confirmed mistletoe-oaks in Britain. V. album parasitising Quercus spp. mainly occurs at locations in and around Herefordshire in the core of the current and past distribution of V. album in Britain. The results of this recent survey accord with the earlier review and with reports in the 19th and early 20th centuries suggesting that the population of between ten and twenty Quercus trees parasitised by V. album in Britain appears to be relatively stable over time with some losses of host trees and gains from the parasitism of new trees. Quercus robur L. is the most frequent host amongst the existing mistletoe-oaks which also include ‘red oaks’ (Q. rubra L., Q. coccinea Münchh. and Q. palustris Münchh.). The estimated ages of the existing Quercus hosts range from 30 to 400 years. The mistletoe-oaks are located in woodland, woodland edges, hedges, parkland, a garden, a churchyard and open countryside by a watercourse. We here Parasitic plants reconstructed the evolutionary history of Viscum based on plastid and nuclear DNA sequence data. We obtained a Host range evolution highly resolved phylogenetic tree with ten well-supported clades, which we used to understand the spatio- Geographic range expansion temporal evolution of these aerial parasites and evaluate the contribution of reproductive switches and shifts in Reproductive switches host ranges to their distribution and diversification. The genus Viscum originated in the early Eocene in Africa Viscum and appeared to have diversified mainly through geographic isolation, in several cases apparently coinciding with shifts in host preferences. During its evolution, switches in the reproductive mode from ancestral dioecy to monoecy imply an important role in the long-distance dispersal of the parasites from Africa to continental Asia and Australia.

A plant parasite parasitizing another plant parasite is referred to as epiparasitism, which is extremely rare in angiosperms. In despite of the particularly special lifeform of epiparasitic plants, their plastomes have not been characterized to date. Sequending such plastomes may enable new insights into the evolutionary pathway of plastome degradation associated with parasitism. Results: In this study, we generated complete plastomes of Phacellaria compressa and P. glomerata (Santalaceae, Santalales) through Illumina shotgun sequencing. Plastome assembly and comparison indicated that plastomes of both species exhibit the quadripartite structure typical of angiosperms, and that they possess similar size, structure, gene content, and arrangement of genes to other hemiparasites in Santalales, especially to those hemiparasites in Santalaceae.

Whether in holiday greenery or in deciduous trees, mistletoe is a visible symbol of tree damage. Mistletoe negatively impacts both tree health and structure. Mistletoe is a parasite which initiates branch decline and loss, wood decay and discoloration, animal and pathogenic entry points into a tree, and oxygenation and drying of wood. Mistletoe commandeers growth resources from trees. Early intervention is critical to maintaining tree health and structural integrity. Mistletoe has a long history of being noticed and celebrated by humans. Spiritual blessings and curses were centered around mistletoe. Some forms of mistletoe, especially when infecting a particular individual tree or species of tree, were important in naturalistic religions or rites. The term “mistletoe” has a much less exotic and revered background. Because mistletoe was thought to be propagated by bird droppings, the term mistletoe is derived from Anglo-Saxon for “a twig with bird droppings,” or distantly derived from “a different kind of twig.” Kissing under this parasite has many meanings. World Context Of all the angiosperm plants, only about 1% are parasites. Of these angiosperm parasites, ~40% parasitize other plant shoots. Mistletoes are shoot parasites. Worldwide there are hundreds of mistletoe species. The family group is called the Viscaceae (Santaleles order) which contains ~575 species and 7 genera. Of the seven genera, three have significant tree impacts.
