Peter’s father designed his first course in 1929 and pursued an illustrious career until his retirement in the mid 80’s. Harradine Golf has designed, constructed, remodelled and supervised the construction of more than 200 golf course projects in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. These courses are situated in every type of terrain, from arid, rocky, dry, hot and saline deserts, to wet, humid, temperate and cold grasslands, wetlands, swamps, mountains, waste tips, agricultural fields, coastal regions and altitudes of 1,850 metres. Many Harradine Golf courses have won numerous awards and host yearly PGA tournaments. Harradine Golf always find sustainable ecological solutions and create courses for golfers, not unplayable monuments to ecology. The integration of a golf course within a site is like a heart transplant – the site must not reject it. Harradine Golf were involved and are active in Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Egypt, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sudan, Switzerland, Tunisia and United Arab Emirates. Harradine Golf Page 4 of 62 February 2021 Since 1929 Philosophy / Concept The “Harradine” concept relies on the natural preservation and integration of the existing topography and environment. The particular features of each site are improved or enhanced in order to create a unique course for that particular location and not just a copy of one of their courses built elsewhere. The “Harradine” design philosophy seeks to deliver courses that are a challenge to good players whilst avoiding unnecessary hazards and frustrations to the less experienced golfer who could actually abandon the game or choose a less demanding course. “Harradine Golf” is extremely aware of this problem and the layouts incorporate several techniques to overcome this delicate situation. Golf should be enjoyable and not a drudgery! “Harradine Golf” does not want to imitate Arizona in Switzerland or Scotland in Italy! Each course should be a local, distinct and unique experience. The “Harradine Golf” “signature” lies in the fact that each and every individual site has a direct influence on their designs dictated by the parameters of the game and sustainable constraints imposed by ecological, environmental, administrative and ecological restrictions. “Harradine Golf” never forgets that their best friend is the greenkeeper. This very important man will either “make” or “break” any course! “Harradine” golf courses are therefore designed to be as “maintenance friendly” as possible without unnecessary and unwarranted complications. Harradine Golf Page 5 of 62 February 2021 Since 1929 Peter Harradine Peter is the Principal and Senior Architect of “Harradine Golf” with overall responsibility for the design and construction supervision of all “Harradine Golf” projects. Born in 1945 next to the old golf course in Gurten (Berne, Switzerland), Peter continues the family’s golfing tradition. Peter’s contact with golf course construction started as a very young boy. His father drafted him to work on his projects during the school holidays which provided an obligatory, early and somewhat discontented experience with mud, rain, heat, freezing temperatures, rubber boots, rocks, clay, drainage, target dates, broken down machinery and all the other niceties of construction sites. Playing golf was compulsory in the family and he received his first set of clubs at the age of six. A little practice and many rounds could not improve a handicap of 5. Frequent travel caused by his own insistence for personal supervision of the scattered sites, coupled with recurring and severe back problems followed by an operation has relegated him to a spectator who encourages his sons and his design team to play this fantastic, but oh so frustrating game! In 1965-1966 Peter went to the U.S.A to study the theoretical and practical aspects of landscaping and golf course design and construction. Upon returning to Europe, he built and designed many courses with his father and other prominent European Architects of the time. Harradine Golf Page 6 of 62 February 2021 Since 1929 A visit to the United Arab Emirates in 1976 to investigate the possibilities of a golf course led to the subsequent establishment of the Dubai office in 1989. Peter has personally designed and co-designed over 160 golf courses in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Peter is a former President of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects and the European Society of Golf Course Architects. Harradine Golf Page 7 of 62 February 2021 Since 1929 Services Ecology Research, co-operation and investigations with the concerned authorities, administrations and associations in order to design projects that fully comply with local and national ecological and environmental conditions and requirements. Ecological and environmental organizations are involved in the definition of “no-go” areas within and adjacent to each site before we start the preliminary designs. Initial discussions with all concerned parties allow the team to find solutions that will facilitate the release of building permits. If the golf course infringes on valuable ecological areas, we try to move the offending fairway, tee or green or find other compensating solutions such as the creation of new ecological zones and areas that can be colonized by indigenous flora and fauna. Zoning Plans Integrated zoning plans, including the routing of the golf course(s), positioning, locations and surfaces for the club house(s), hotel(s), primary, secondary and tertiary real estate, roads, car parks and other eventual sports facilities. Construction started in 1999 and the 18 holes were opened on the 8th of September 2001. The course is artificially and gently ondulated and is crossed by an artificial stream which feeds three artificial lakes. The large rocks and stones lining the stream and lakes are typical to that particular part of the world and give the course a unique, impressive and original touch. All the rocks and stones were extracted from the sub-soil during construction. Losone is a “Technical” course with fast greens and a good finishing hole for the spectators as it ends right in front of the club house terrace. Losone is often described as one of the most beautiful courses in Switzerland.
