In the opening match on Center Court, Bautista Agut meets 2013 winner Nicolas Mahut in a rematch of last year’s quarter-final won by the Spaniard in three sets. Mahut, who qualified into the main draw, defeated 2001 Topshelf Open champion Lleyton Hewitt in the first round. In the second men’s match, Austrian Jurgen Melzer brings a 3-1 head-to-head advantage against Goffin, who is looking for his first win here (0-2). The Belgian No. 1 comes in a career-high No. 15 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. There are two other matches on Court 1 with Swiss qualifier Marco Chiudinelli playing Mannarino for the first time on the ATP World Tour and last year’s semi-finalist Sousa facing Ukraine qualifier Illya Marchenko, who won the previous meeting in ’08. REIGNING CHAMP – Last year’s Most Improved Player of the Year on the ATP World Tour, Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, broke through to win his maiden title here (d. Becker). One month later he captured his second title in Stuttgart (d. Rosol), which is also being played this week. He climbed from No. 59 at the end of 2013 to finish a year-end best No. 15 last season. He is the only former champion in the field. This season the 27-year-old Spaniard has compiled an 18-15 match record, reaching the semi-finals in Chennai, Marseille and Munich. QUALIFIERS EYE QUARTERS – Three of the four qualifiers who advanced to the second round are trying to reach the quarter-finals – Marco Chiudinelli, Nicolas Mahut and Illya Marchenko. On Wednesday, Japanese qualifier Tatsuma Ito lost to Ivo Karlovic in two tie-breaks. Qualifiers have enjoyed success here in the past 10 years with Benjamin Becker winning the title in 2009 and Mahut in 2013. Philipp Petzschner was runner-up in 2012 and Peter Wessels in 2007.
