Ex-MP publishes controversial book Former Liberal MP Gary Francis McCauley published a book last week that’s sure to gener- ate a reaction from current and past members of the Canadian military. Titled Fraud & Dis- ability: The SNAFU at Veterans Affairs, the 140- page book details countless cases of what Mr. McCauley considers bogus disability claims by current or former members of the armed forces and RCMP. One chapter he called People Out to Screw the Department details Mr. McCau- ley’s opinions on post-traumatic stress disorder and some questionable-sounding claims—the names of claimants aren’t included—related to PTSD he says came before him while he served on the Veterans Review and Appeal Board, which hears appeals over benefi t claims denied by the federal government, in the mid-2000s. Mr. McCauley, who represented Monc- ton, N.B. from 1979 to 1984, had previously published a pair of historical fi ction novels Good jobs. based loosely on the experiences of his uncle, who served in the Second World War. “That was my image of a veteran when I went to work for the Veterans Review and Sustainable fishery.     Joint statement calling for sanctioning of Chinese and Hong Kong officials and protection for Hong Kongers at risk of political persecution We, the undersigned, call upon the Government of Canada to take action in light of the mass arrests and assault on civil rights following the unilateral imposition of the new National Security Law in Hong Kong. Many in Hong Kong fear they will face the same fate as the student protestors in Tiananmen Square, defenders’ lawyers, and millions of interned Uyghurs, Tibetans, and faith groups whose rights of free expression and worship are denied. We urge the Government of Canada to offer a “Safe Harbour Program” with an expedited process to grant protection and permanent residency status to Hong Kongers at risk of political persecution under the National Security Law, including international students and expatriate workers who have been involved in protest actions in Canada. Furthermore, Canada must invoke the Sergei Magnitsky Law to sanction Chinese and Hong Kong officials who instituted the National Security Law, as well as other acts violating human rights; and to ban them and their immediate family members from Canada and freeze their Canadian assets. Canada needs to work closely with international allies with shared values to institute a strong policy toward China. It is time for Canada to take meaningful action to show leadership on the world stage. What is your party’s platform with respect to the accessibility of health care and quality medical services near to rural and small town residents? Is the current situation satisfactory? NDP Response: After eight years in government, Stephen Harper’s Conservatives have failed to improve public health care. This is simply unacceptable. New Democrats have a practical plan to strengthen public health care, all Canadians deserve the best quality care, regardless of where they live. Tom Mulcair is committed to better home care, long-term care, palliative care and expanded public coverage for prescription drugs. We’ll put patients at the centre of primary care, and tackle the social determinants of health while recognizing the importance of mental health. These initiatives will benefit all Canadians—including rural and small town residents. 2. Rural and small town Ontario has an older demographic than urban places making services for an aging population, aging in place/home-care/seniors housing a priority for many. Does your party have a proposed policy agenda that it would implement relevant to a rural/small town context? NDP Response: Over the next 25 years, the number of seniors in Canada will double. We need to be ready. But instead of taking action, Stephen Harper’s Conservatives raised the age of eligibility for OAS and GIS from 65 to 67.

Let me welcome you all with the greeting of Islam on behalf of the Canadian Muslim network; a network of Muslim organizations across Canada from BC to Alberta all the way to Ontario, Quebec and the Mari- times. The network was put in place to create an environment of collabora- tion and communication between Muslim organizations on issues of interest to Muslim Canadians nationally as well as to enhance communication and collaboration between Canadians of Muslim faith with Canadians of all other faiths. The list of names of the organizations in the network is at the back of your program (attached here as appendix), and I invite you to look at it in detail to appreciate the breadth of representation here tonight. This initiative is also supported by a multitude of other organizations that are also listed at the back. As you may expect civil liberties is high on our agenda. The Canadian Muslim Network is proud to have organized this incredible event to pay trib- ute to our cherished civil liberties in Canada, to recognize the massive effort that many in this room exerted to ensure we restore our civil liberties and pro- tect them for the future of our children and to remind ourselves that while we have reasons to celebrate our recent successes, the road ahead is still long.
