The following talk was given by George Critchlow on April 25, 2006 at Temple Beth Shalom in Spokane, Washington in honor of Yom Hashoah, the annual remembrance of the Holocaust. Critchlow, an associate pro- fessor at Gonzaga University School of Law and a founder and former director of the Gonzaga Institute for Action Against Hate, was selected by the congregation to represent the “righteous gentile.” Professor Critchlow would like to acknowledge the helpful ideas and background information presented at the Amnesty International USA Lawyers’ Conference at the University of Washington School of Law on February 17-18, 2006. In particular, he was inspired by John Shattuck’s presentation titled “The Legacy of Nuremberg: Confronting Genocide and Terrorism Through the Rule of Law.” I have enormous respect for Temple Beth Shalom, what it stands for, its congregation, and those individuals whom I have come to know and count as friends. I am deeply honored and privileged to be invited to speak to you on this Day of Remembrance–especially in light of the occasion to recognize the 60 years that have now passed since the establishment of a new rule of law and accountability regarding war crimes and crimes against humanity at the Nuremberg Military Tribunal in 1946. I have a poster hanging in my office that frequently catches my eye and reminds me to connect my heart with my head. It is a picture of a small child of uncertain ethnicity, running happily, arms out, into the smiling face and open arms of his mother.

The Denver Catholic Register WEDNESDAY JUNE 20, 1979 VOL. LIV NO. 36 Colorado’s Largest Weekly 32 PAGES 25 CENTS PER COPY Conrad, an Editorial Cartoonist Whose Pen Has a Tongue of Fire By Thomas M. Jenkins Assaulting complacency, ridiculing corruption and lambasting the pretentions, malfeasances and idiotic decisions of modern bureaucratic government as well as the personal and spiritual plight of the American citizen, Paul Conrad is a cartoonist who dares to be controversial and take an unequivocal stand. In the process, his six cartoons a week for the Los Angeles Times have been raising blood pressures for the past 16 years. After two Pulitzer Prizes and two published books, his caustic im agery continues to be syndicated in 150 newspapers. Conrad, who was with the Denver Post for 13 years as an editorial cartoonist, has justly earned his place in the procession of the illustrious cartoonist pens of Daumier, Nast, Levine, MacNelly, Mauldin, Herblock, Wright and Oliphant. He maintains the gutsy tradition of those satirists whose ridicule contains the truth necessary to puncture the bubbles of inept leadership, overuse of power, the inability to act, the mistreatment of the disadvantaged, elderly and ignorant, the prolongation of war and the continuation of a destructive monetary policy. If he seems cruel to the politician, it is only to be kind to the Republic. Religious Conviction Unique in presentation is Conrad’s religious conviction. Under no constraining directives from the Los Angeles Times, Conrad is always forthright and sometimes brutal in confronting the spiritual issues of the day. In that process, he disturbs (and even angers) many of his readers as he forces them to look at themselves and their patterns of living.

The Canadian Catholic Conference of Bishops denounced the attestation as “unacceptable,” as did individual bishops, and Cardinal Thomas Collins of Toronto and Archbishop Terrence Prendergast of Ottawa were notably clear Catholics could not sign it. “We cannot affirm that we support a (non-existent) right to abortion, which is what the euphemism ‘reproductive rights’ means,” wrote Prendergast in January in the Ottawa Sun. https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/150-catholic-groups-sign-trudeaus-pro-abortion-pledge-some-retract 1/6 9/13/2019 150+ Catholic groups sign Trudeau’s pro-abortion pledge, some retract | News | LifeSite “We didn’t start this controversy,” Collins told Vatican Radio in February. “We’re trying to be cooperative, but we cannot check off the box.” But despite this, at least 157 identifiably Catholic groups have done just that, according to the database of Canada Summer Job grant recipients for 2018, available online for some weeks. Of these, the majority — 107, or 68 percent — are parishes, but charities, school boards, religious orders, hospitals, a day care, and care homes are also listed. • Saint Francis Xavier Relic Touches Tens of Thousands, Reaches out to Millions Coast to Coast
Saint Francis Xavier relic touches tens of thousands, reaches out to millions coast to coast Ottawa, February 3, 2018 – Saint Francis Xavier’s right forearm is returning to its normal resting place in Rome after an exceptionally busy month of mission in Canada. The major relic of one of history’s most prolific and renowned international missionaries travelled to 15 Canadian cities between December 26, 2017 and February 3, 2018 as part of a visit organized by the Archdiocese of Ottawa, the Jesuits of Canada and Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) to celebrate Canada’s 150th year and CCO’s 30th year. “The response from pilgrims across the country has been overwhelming,” says Terrence Prendergast, Archbishop of Ottawa. "Attendance at these events has been a wonderful witness of the faith in Canada and I have been touched myself by my experience of the relic.” Organizers estimate that more than 70,000 Canadians made the special pilgrimage to see, touch and pray with the sacred relic while millions more learned about the saint and the practice of veneration through headlines and news reports in media across the country. It has been a very busy month of events, and the close of the tour is especially emotional. “It’s going to be tough to say goodbye,” said D’Arcy Murphy, the guardian of the relic during its time in Canada. “Saint Francis really feels like a close friend, and the memories of this experience will stay with me for the rest of my life. It has been a very powerful month.” “It has been incredible to watch Saint Francis Xavier inspire so many Canadians in their faith,” says Angèle Regnier, co-founder of CCO.

(IV) EVANGELIZATION AND THE PARISH I. Why Look at Parish? In recent years the dignity of the person and the role of culture have been central to the Church’s mission of evangelization. However, between a theological anthropology of the person and the social analysis of culture there is another practical dimension of Christian life that has been somewhat ignored. I am referring to the idea and function of parish. Helping parishes to become missionary, that is, to become engines of evangelization is one challenge that the Bishops of North America face.1 Understanding the meaning of Parish and its mission to evangelize deserves focused attention and action for five reasons. First, we often take the idea of parish for granted. In urban areas, the territorial definition of parish has very little or no meaning. People seek the parish and the Sunday Mass time that maximizes their convenience and satisfaction thanks to the car and a dash of the consumerism. Parish allegiance is diminishing.2 What idea of parish is really operative today? What idea should be operative and what should we be doing about it? Second, the Church is a catalyst or at least an arena for the dynamic between culture and the faithful. But is this happening at the parish level? At least one Canadian theologian has argued it is not and that in the future parishes may not be necessary.3 Third, immigration and multiculturalism have radically altered the presuppositions and expectations of what a parish is and how it should function. In the Greater Toronto Area, the Eucharistic Assembly is a wonderful sight to behold because of the variety of multinational faces.
