Courtesy of Wikimedia Commons A new "Stand Your Ground" law was cited in a recent Columbia shooting Senate Bill 656, which went into effect Jan. 1, allows citizens to use deadly force whenever they feel reasonably threatened, without retreating first. This is commonly referred to as “Stand Your Ground.” Columbia resident Karl Henson was arrested last month for first-degree felony after shooting at a man who tried to steal his cellphone. “The only reason I thought it was okay to shoot at him while he was running away was because of what happened with the new year on the law change,” Henson said in the probable cause statement for the Jan. 23 incident. Column: It's brutal having someone sit in your unassigned assigned seat Columnist Kennedy Horton tackles the problem we’ve all experienced: someone stealing your unassigned assigned seat. “Determining one’s seat happens in the first two days of class. The rules of a classroom versus a lecture hell are a bit different, because after a certain row in a lecture, it doesn’t matter; it’s just all counted as “the back.” Nevertheless, there are still rules. After two days of class, you should be locked in and solidified. You’re essentially sworn into that seat until the end of time, or at least the semester. Therefore, it’s a crime to sit anywhere else.” Read more here. Recap: The Chicago Blackhawks won 5-1 against the Buffalo Sabres. In the NBA All-Star Game last night, West Conference came out on top. They sent out a crime alert that night, which initially only mentioned this incident and another similar incident the suspect could have been involved in. MU will add a Native American indigenous studies minor The new minor will be available in fall 2017 through the religious studies department. The minor is intended to provide an interdisciplinary overview of Native American studies and to look broadly at Native American communities through political, social, economic and historical lenses. Dennis Kelley, an associate professor in the religious studies department, has been the leading force behind the creation of the minor. “There is an expressed interest from the students as evidenced by our classes being quite popular,” Kelley said. “People are interested and concerned about American Indian and indigenous issues both here and abroad.” Recap: The St. Louis Blues lost 2-1 against Florida Panthers. The slates do not agree on whether they support a past joint session resolution that calls for MU to divest from prison labor, and all three slates support the Enhance Mizzou fee, which would expand library and Counseling Center access, among other things. When asked to disclose how much money their campaigns planned to spend, Schafer said her campaign would spend around $1,800, and Stockton/Gulati said they would spend around $1,500. Willett/Englert had raised $4,885 as of Tuesday night for their campaign through a GoFundMe page with a fundraising goal set at $10,000. All three slates agreed campaign funding and endorsements should be regulated and that the cost of running an MSA campaign can be a barrier for the involvement of some students. (photo by Julia Hansen) Feature: Junior JoMerra Watson alters iconic paintings to confront contemporary issues By Hannah Simon For many, prints of masterpieces such as the “Mona Lisa” and “The Birth of Venus” cling to the cinderblock walls of student dorm rooms. For one MU student, however, these iconic paintings are blank canvases ready to be recreated. JoMerra Watson, a fine arts junior with an emphasis in painting, redefines iconic paintings such as Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” and Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” in her series “Rewrite.” The series, displayed at the Visual Art and Design Showcase held at Jesse Hall from Jan. 30 to Feb. 3, incorporates black women into the artwork. In doing so, Watson aims to confront contemporary issues, such as the black community’s lack of representation in art, police brutality and modern-day standards of beauty. Read the rest here.
