Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Fauna Conservation Department Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 29 June 2010 Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Publication Series: No 6 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve moth survey 2009 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Executive Summary The objective of this survey was to generate a moth species list for the Butterfly Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest [SSSI] at Fung Yuen, Tai Po, Hong Kong. The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed. -

The two new species reported in this paper are the result of surveys of olethreutine moths in eastern Thailand during 2011-2012. Materials and Methods This study is based on specimens deposited in the Kasetsart Kamphaengsaen Insect Collection (KKIC). Specimens were examined and measured using an Olympus SZ40 stereomicroscope with an ocular micrometer. Forewing length was measured from the outer edge of the tegula at the wing base to the outermost edge of the fringe scales at the apex. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new species of Fibuloides Kuznetsov (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae: Eucosmini), Fibuloides khaonanensis Pinkaew, is described and illustrated based on male specimens collected from evergreen forest in Khao Nan National Park, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand. Eucoenogenes bicucullus Pinkaew and Eucoenogenes vaneeae Pinkaew, described from male and female specimens collected from Thong Pha Phum National Park, Thailand, are transferred to Fibuloides (n. comb). Key words: new species, new combination, Eucosmini, Fibuloides, Eucoenogenes Fibuloides was described as monobasic by Kuznetsov (1997) to include Fibuloides modificana Kuznetsov from South Vietnam. Kuznetsov (1997) characterized the genus by the following features: costal fold narrow in male, forewing veins R4 and R5 stalked, R3 base close to this stem, CuA1 strongly curved and originating near M3 base, hindwing with M3 and CuA1 stalked, and the valve extremely modified, with an unusually long, sclerotized processes originating from the apex of the sacculus. Horak (2006) noted that males in this genus usually have a notch at the base of the flagellum, modified fringe scales along anal margin or long hair pencils from base of anal margin, modified scaling dorsally as a transverse band on the abdomen, and weak lateral arms of the gnathos from below the middle of the tegumen with two sclerotized bands arising medially. -

This is a handsome paperback treating the tortricid fauna of Vietnam, and it represents the culmination of decades of work by V. I. Kuznetsov, J. Razowski, and now S. Nedoshivina. The book treats 363 species, each with its own species account and distribution map, the latter of which are neatly packed together near the end of the book. Nearly all species are illustrated in color, most for the first time. Black-and-white images of the male and female genitalia of select species also are provided. Early chapters provide a review of wing pattern nomenclature, morphological termin- ology of structures of the genitalia, and features of the larvae and pupae. Next, there is a checklist of the species recorded from Vietnam. Then, the bulk of the book is dedicated to the species accounts, which include comments on taxonomy, identi- fication, food plants, and geographic distrib- NEW BOOK ON ution, and occasionally with a list of specimens examined from Vietnam. Introduction: VLADIMIR IVANOVICH KUZNETZOV (1929-2008) (figs 1-5) is one of the most famous modern Russian lepidopterologists. He was born 28.II.1929 in Kingisepp, Leningrad Region. His father was née EGOROV and he was born into the family of a smith. Therefore he was known at school as a smith’s son, in Russian transcription as Kuznetzov (=Kuznetz’s son). Thus, the family name KUZNETZOV is in some sense a pseudonym. During The Second World War KUZNETZOV lost his mother and lived in an orphanage until his father came back from the War. -

Needless to say, there has been a huge amount of change in the Museum during these past four decades, so a few reminiscences may be in order.
