CONGRATULATING ARCHIE KALEPA FOR BEING INDUCTED INTO THE HAWAI' I WATERMAN HALL OF FAME
WHEREAS, the Hawai'i Waterman Hall of Fame, led by the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, honors those legendary figures within our islands' water sports community whose contributions have inspired and perpetuated the unique connection and love between our kama' aina and the ocean; and
WHEREAS, Archie Kalepa, one of Hawai'i's greatest ocean sports pioneers, has been selected as a 2012 Hawai'i Waterman Hall of Fame inductee; and
WHEREAS, Archie Kalepa is the first and only inductee from Maui, and joins the ranks of such other prestigious watermen as Duke Kahanamoku, Eddie Aikau, and Buffalo and Brian Keaulana; and
WHEREAS, as a key player in the push to modernize and innovate stand-up paddling, Archie Kalepa became a trailblazer in establishing long-distance stand-up paddle racing, completing the first stand-up solo crossing of the Molokai Channel in 2004, and the first stand-up paddle of 187 miles down the Colorado River in 2009; and
WHEREAS, Archie Kalepa is the head of Maui County's Ocean Safety Division, and through his work with Brian Keaulana and Todd Bradley, Archie has been instrumental in the design and testing of ground-breaking rescue equipment; and
WHEREAS, with a combined 75 years of lifesaving experience, and as pioneers in the use of jet skis and sleds for tow-in surfing and rescue work, Archie Kalepa and Brian Keaulana have redesigned and refined water rescue gear to a paramilitary level; and
WHEREAS, Archie Kalepa has made significant contributions to the surfing world through his sports achievements and ocean safety expertise, innovating ways of safely enjoying the ocean, and sharing that knowledge with professionals and youth alike; and Resolution No. 2
