About: The South Health Campus Section of Anesthesia in Calgary is our province’s newest academic and we are looking for caring and talented anesthesiologists. We have a busy regional block room and play a central role in our city’s regional anesthesia educational programs. Full Canadian credentials are required.

South Health Campus is a tertiary care center affiliated with the Cumming School of Medicine and is one section within the citywide Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine. We provide anesthesia for a range of surgical specialties, including orthopedics, general surgery, ENT, plastics, gynecology, and obstetrics.

Our department is highly collegial and collaborative with all surgical specialties, in part because of our vibrant regional anesthesia, acute pain, and transitional pain services.

All permanent staff members are hired in the department at the level of Clinical Lecturer. Those seeking academic promotion are encouraged to do so and support is provided.

Position Overview:

We are looking for a 0.8 FTE staff anesthesiologist. The starting date for the position is flexible, but ideally by July 1, 2021.

You would be expected to be involved in all clinical areas of the section, including:

1. Clinical anesthesia care in the operating rooms, pre-operative assessment clinic, acute pain consultation service, non-OR anesthesia services (e.g. kyphoplasty and other diagnostic imaging, endoscopy, women’s health outpatient clinics), and obstetrical anesthesia.

2. Teaching medical students, anesthesia residents, off-service residents, hospital respiratory therapists, RT and paramedic students, and other physician colleagues.

3. Participating in Section and Zone-wide educational activities (in both presentation and audience roles).

4. Participating in simulation and team-training exercises.

5. Participating in Section and Zone-wide administration and committee work at the discretion of the Section Chief and Zone Clinical Department Head.

6. As a citywide department, there is also an expectation of work at non-hospital surgical facilities, as well as other acute care sites, as required by the section or zone department.

7. Members are required to use the anesthesia electronic record.

8. Adhering to Section policies, including holiday and time off scheduling practices, as well as AHS Medical Staff Bylaws.

9. A commitment to our section’s mission and values, as well as our hospital’s four pillars.

Calgary is approximately 80km east of the Canadian Rockies and is located in the transition zone between the Rocky Mountain Foothills and the Canadian prairies. It is the largest city in , with a metropolitan population of 1,239,220 people (Statistics , 2016). The city is large in physical area, consisting of an inner city surrounded by suburban communities of various densities.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have their FRCPC in Anesthesia; demonstrate an ability to work effectively with a multi- disciplinary team; superior interpersonal communication skills; and a strong commitment to delivering innovative anesthetic care. Candidates must possess membership with the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (with current maintenance of certification) and must demonstrate a strong interest in teaching. Priority will be given to candidates with 5 years or more of clinical experience.
