Illyrian Religion and Nation As Zero Institution
Studies in Visual Arts and Communication: an international journal Vol 3, No 1 (2016) on-line ISSN 2393 - 1221 Illyrian religion and nation as zero institution Josipa Lulić * Abstract The main theoretical and philosophical framework for this paper are Louis Althusser's writings on ideology, and ideological state apparatuses, as well as Rastko Močnik’s writings on ideology and on the nation as the zero institution. This theoretical framework is crucial for deconstructing some basic tenants in writing on the religious sculpture in Roman Dalmatia, and the implicit theoretical constructs that govern the possibilities of thought on this particular subject. This paper demonstrates how the ideological construct of nation that ensures the reproduction of relations of production of modern societies is often implicitly or explicitly projected into the past, as trans-historical construct, thus soliciting anachronistic interpretations of the material remains of past societies. This paper uses the interpretation of religious sculpture in Roman Dalmatia as a case study to stress the importance of the critique of ideology in the art history. The religious sculpture in Roman Dalmatia has been researched almost exclusively through the search for the presumed elements of Illyrian religion in visual representations; the formulation of the research hypothesis was firmly rooted into the idea of nation as zero institution, which served as the default framework for various interpretations. In this paper I try to offer some alternative interpretations, intending not to give definite answers, but to open new spaces for research. Signature 2 To the five Albanian families for opening their homes and sharing their stories with me. 3 Abstract My research explores the dialectical relationship between identity and the conceptualisation/creation of history and heritage in migration by studying a socially excluded group in Greece, that of Albanian families. Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania. -

At the end of the eighties, life expectancy at birth passed the boundary of seventy, although the country’s GDP per capita was $ 2500 in 1990, the lowest in Europe (Madison 1995).This puzzled scholars, who either doubted the success of Albania, or because of the lack of firm information, speculated with different explanations (Watson, 1995). This research was initiated by this controversy in trying to first, estimate the scale of Albania’s success in improving life expectancy and document the mortality transition in Albania during the period 1950-1990. -

Izvorni naučni rad Josip MILETIĆ (Zadar) University of Zadar [email protected] Tea TEREZA VIDOVIĆ-SCHREIBER (Split) University of Split [email protected] DALMATIA – BETTIZA’S LOST HOMELAND The paper analyses the potential of Bettiza’s fiction for the deve- lopment of Croatian and Italian cultural relations as well as tourist promotion of the Croatian historical region of Dalmatia. Particular attention is focused on the novel Exile, in which the author writes a family chronicle by evoking his Split roots. At the same time, he describes the atmosphere, customs and picturesque figures of Dal- matian towns in the interwar period, the encounter of Slavic and Roman culture, as well as the destiny of the Italian population there who, due to the turmoil of war and socialist revolution, decided to leave their homeland. Reception of Bettiza’s work, as an account of an individual history that is completely different from the written (national), the collective history, can positively affect the Italian perception of Dalmatia as a tourist destination, and it can improve the distorted image of Croats living there, which has been created for decades in Italy, through the activist action of extreme groups, therefore it can be of multiple use. Proving that not all Italians for- cibly left their former homeland, but that a part of them left freely seeking a better life for themselves and their families not seeing any perspective in the upcoming communism, allows for the constructi- on of bridges between Slavic and Roman culture, and an even better and more effective tourism promotion of this Croatian region in the context of Italian tourist interests. -

The term “public space”, also known as urban space is a pretty old phrase, but was used as e concept with a clear definition during the modern era. The evolution of this term is well known in Tirana, because of its constant development especially in the recent projects. The first attempts started in 1914, but by that time there did not exist a real concept of the public space, which accordingly was affected by the citizens’ lifestyle. Public spaces in Tirana have changed a lot since then by recreating the concept of “public use”. There are many examples of squares, streets and parks which have gone through the process of change over the years and have affected people’s lives. -

Earth and Nature-Based Spirituality: from Deep Ecology to Radical

In Part I of this study, I argue that although participants in countercultural movements often eschew the label religion, these are religious movements, in which these persons find ultimate meaning and transformative power in nature. Focusing on the deep ecology movement, I further argue that (1) experiences of nature spirituality are evoked by practices as diverse as mountaineering, neo-shamanic ritualising and states of consciousness induced by hallucinogens; (2) earthen spiritualities are often contested and may be viewed as inauthentic or dangerous by practitioners of other forms of nature spirituality; and (3) despite significant diversity, a sense of connection and belonging to nature (sometimes personified as a transforming, if not transcendent power) unites these cross-fertilising and sometimes competing spiritualities. Part II examines additional forms of nature-oriented religion, searching further for continuities, discon- tinuities and ironies among its diverse forms. 2001 Academic Press Question: ‘What are your spiritual beliefs?’ Answer: ‘Well, I believe in the cosmos. Eco-spirituality: Perhaps the Vatican should be worried about nature worship The Catholic Church was offended by the green spirituality of Avatar, but the movie reflects a real-world shift to nature-based religions. If the Vatican feels threatened by the promotion of nature worship, it may have cause, says religion professor Bron Taylor. By Adriana Barton Globe and Mail | Published on Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, also online with public comments. On the fictitious world of Pandora, Avatar director James Cameron unleashed many terrible things: greed, brutality and a bewildering array of savage beasts, not to mention a biotech means of going native that Grey Owl (the Victorian “Indian”) could only dream of. None of this alarmed the Catholic Church. Rather, it was Pandora’s message of hope and faith in the interconnectedness of life that put the church on high alert. Vatican Radio chastised the film for presenting nature as “a divinity to worship” and for promoting “all those pseudo-doctrines that turn ecology into the religion of the millennium.” At least the Vatican isn’t out of touch. According to Bron Taylor, author of the new book Dark Green Religion, nature-based spirituality is not only undergoing a renaissance – it’s giving religious institutions a run for their money. Western society is in a dramatic shift away from monotheism, notes Dr. Taylor, professor of religion at the University of Florida. And in many cases, he says, former believers are turning to Mother Earth to fill the spiritual void. He cites findings that large numbers of people in Europe and the United States express “deep trust in nature as inherently spiritual or sacred.” The trend is obvious on the West Coast. -

Since the military humanitarian intervention in 1999, reconciliation process initiated by the European Union, U.S., and other members in the international community, began almost immediately after the war, in attempt to bring peace to the former Yugoslav republic and territory. However, little effort has been made in attempt to dissect and analyze the causes of the ethnic conflict, such as patterns of ethnic boundaries, given that ethnic tensions continue to challenge the peace-building process. This thesis research, therefore, investigates ethnic relations and changing ethnic boundaries in Kosovo between the years of 1980 and 2015.
