We aimed to figure out the frequency of ticks on cows, goats, sheep, lambs, turtles and also obscure hosts in Kurdistan Province, bordered with Iraq June 2012 to May 2013. Methods: The hosts were selected randomly and examined individually for tick infestation. In case of infestation, ticks were collected using forceps and then preserved in 70% ethyl alcohol. All collected specimens were preserved in tubes and relative information was recorded and then identified based on morphological characteristics. Results: Totally, 1209 ticks were collected. -

Kurdistan province and especially in Qorveh has giant minerals such as ornamental and building stones because of specific geographic and geologic condition. Mining operation in small scale, contour and open pit mining extract and other mining activities which environmental assessment rule doesn’t include them caused a lot of negative effects in Qorveh. Large number of metallic and nonmetallic deposits, registered and in turn permits mines show inappropriate effects on environment. These reasons caused to search about environmental effects of mining activities in the study area. In this study, used methods like: chemical analysis of current water which affected by mining activities, composition of the metallic elements in soils around the mines, GPS, field studies, questionnaire and interview. Results indicate the heavy metals contamination in the water and soil sources around the metallic deposits, lack of contamination or minor contamination of heavy metals in soil sources around the non metallic deposits, high association of heavy toxic metals in textures of some plant species and distortion of agricultural lands and grasslands around the mines. -

Nasrabadi and Bidabadi Iranian Journal of Environmental Health Science & Engineering 2013, 10:30 http://www.ijehse.com/content/10/1/30 IRANIAN JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SCIENCE & ENGINEERING RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Evaluating the spatial distribution of quantitative risk and hazard level of arsenic exposure in groundwater, case study of Qorveh County, Kurdistan Iran Touraj Nasrabadi* and Niloufar Shirani Bidabadi Abstract Regional distribution of quantitative risk and hazard levels due to arsenic poisoning in some parts of Iran’s Kurdistan province is considered. To investigate the potential risk and hazard level regarding arsenic-contaminated drinking water and further carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects on villagers, thirteen wells in rural areas of Qorveh County were considered for evaluation of arsenic concentration in water. Sampling campaign was performed in August 2010 and arsenic concentration was measured via the Silver Diethyldithiocarbamate method. The highest and lowest arsenic concentration are reported in Guilaklu and Qezeljakand villages with 420 and 67 μg/L, respectively. None of thirteen water samples met the maximum contaminant level issued by USEPA and Institute of Standards and Industrial Research of Iran (10 ppb). The highest arsenic concentration and consequently risk and hazard levels belong to villages situated alongside the eastern frontiers of the county. Existence of volcanic activities within the upper Miocene and Pleistocene in this part of the study area may be addressed as the main geopogenic source of arsenic pollution. Quantitative risk values are varying from 1.49E-03 in Qezeljakand to 8.92E-03 in Guilaklu and may be interpreted as very high when compared by similar studies in Iran. -

Thus, it is extremely necessary to monitor ground water quality. In the present study, the concentration of cations, anions, and some toxic metals was evaluated in 21 rural water supplies in Qorveh plain in two stages. Data were analyzed with Rockwork and Arc GIS software. Results from Hydro chemical analysis showed that all the studied parameters had lower concentrations than the permitted limits, except for arsenic (As) and selenium (Se) in some of water resources. As concentration in 20% of studied resources were higher than recommended standards. There was a significant difference between nitrate (NO 3−) concentrations in the two low- and high-water seasons (P < 0.01). Bicarbonate (HCO 3−) and calcium (Ca 2+ ) were the prevalent anion and cation, respectively, meaning that samples type was calcium-bicarbonate. Wilcox diagram classified the samples in C2-S1 and C3-S1 classes. Correlation coefficient between chemical parameters showed that HCO 3− and Ca 2+ had the highest correlation. Finally, it can be said that except for As and Se, other water characteristics have a good quality for drinking water application. -

The present study has been performed with the following objectives: (1) to determine the arsenic (As) concentrations in water, soil and leaves of plants growing in contaminated areas; (2) to evaluate the potential risk of arsenic in the Qorveh area and (3) to correlate the arsenic concentrations in water, soil and plants. To assess the potential of the native plant species for phytoremediation, plant, soil and water samples were collected from three contaminated villages of Qorveh County. The areas were the Babagorgor, Mehdikhan and Hajiabad (Qorveh county), and samples were taken from May to December 2012. Water samples were collected from 18 as contaminated shallow wells of Babagorgor, Mehdikhan and Hajiabad villages which were used for drinking and irrigation. The soil sampling period was from May to December 2012 (eight months) that were collected from three As- contaminated areas (20 samples per each area). Plants were sampled from As-contaminated areas in Qorveh county. The plant samples collected from the same location as the soil samples.
