She first discovered the carillon at Stanford, and then went on to further study the instrument at The Netherlands Carillon School. She taught organ and carillon at the University of Michigan School of Music from 1987-2003. In 2008, she began teaching at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has held many positions within the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America. She received both her bachelor's in music and master's in education from Stanford University (Stanford, California, United States), and then a second master's --this time in music -- from University of California, Riverside. She first discovered the carillon at Stanford, and then went on to further study the instrument at The Netherlands Carillon School (Amersfoort, Netherlands/see AACF -- NLAF -- Ne). Some of her teachers included James B. Angell, Lowell Smith, and Jacques Lannoy. She taught organ and carillon at the University of Michigan School of Music (Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States) from 1987-2003. In 2008, she began teaching at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Halsted was the Secretary of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America from 1970-1974, editor of the Carillon News from 1980-1994, chair of the Membership Enrichment committee in 1993 , and now chairs the Associate Carillonneur Examination committee. She also was a delegate from the GCNA to the World Carillon Federation from 1990-1993. She was awarded the 'Certificate of Extraordinary Service' by the GCNA in 1995.
