EQAO Results 2016-2017

In the spring of 2017, our grade 3 and 6 students participated in the Education Quality and Accountabil- ity Office (EQAO) standardized test. This provincial assessment provides a snapshot of our grade 3 & 6 students’ achievement in relation to the provincial standard.

Students meeting or exceeding the standard (Level 3 & 4), have demonstrated most or all of the re- quired reading, writing and mathematics knowledge and skills expected at this stage in their education. Outlined are the results for our school.

Over the next several weeks we will analyze the EQAO results along with several other sources of data to plan effective instruction with the goal of increasing student achievement.

Halloween Costumes Halloween is an exciting and fun-filled time of year for many of our students (and their parents!). It brings out the creative and often dramatic spirit in children of all ages. Students and their parents are reminded that, as a peaceful community, we do not encourage costumes with violent or shocking themes. The School Board’s Safe Schools Policy does NOT permit weapons or replica weapons to be brought to school—even as part of a Halloween costume. We appreciate your understanding and support.

Lake Wilcox PS is a Bronze Level Eco-school and we’re “Going For Gold!” in 2017-18

The LWPS school community is a vibrant environmental gem, nestled in the Oak Ridges Moraine, and surrounded by many kettle lakes. Our children need us to challenge our current thinking and actions about water, garbage and energy use, to sustain and preserve a healthy local environment for generations to come. Please read more here: https://www.richmondhill.ca/en/find-or-learn-about/Streams-Rivers-and-Lakes.aspx

What Can LWPS Families Do? Here are this month’s action items:

Pay for Scholastic orders online: Visit parentpay.scholastic.ca to complete the payment for your Reading Club order, then submit the order form to the teacher.

Here is a Step-by-step guide: http://www.scholastic.ca/clubs/images/parentpay/parentPay-parentGuide_09- 2016.pdf

Send Boomerang Lunches: HOW IT WORKS: All waste from your child’s snacks/lunches will be returned home in their lunch bags. This includes all packaging, uneaten food and leftovers.

WHY WE NEED THIS PROGRAM: Most lunch trash comes from disposable packaging of single use food items, plastic bags and foil. It’s estimated that the average school age child using a disposable lunch produces 67 pounds of of lunch waste per school year! Using re-usable containers, thermos bottles and bringing the right amount of food will let children know they are part of the solution to our waste prob- lems.

BENEFITS: A Boomerang lunch provides families with information about the eating habits and prefer- ences of your child. By carrying home the leftovers you can see what’s been eaten or not. A huge amount of uneaten food goes into the garbage day after day. This is wasteful and expensive. We know this is asking families to re-think food preparations and student actions and our hope is that informative discussions will take place and habits will change. Packing a waste free lunch not only helps the environ- ment it can also result in healthier more nutritious snack/lunches. October 2017
