THE CITY AND COUNTY OF CARDIFF, COUNTY BOROUGH COUNCILS OF BRIDGEND, CAERPHILLY, MERTHYR TYDFIL, RHONDDA CYNON TAF AND THE VALE OF GLAMORGAN AGENDA ITEM NO THE GLAMORGAN ARCHIVES JOINT COMMITTEE 18 March 2016 REPORT FOR THE PERIOD 1 December – 29 February REPORT OF: THE GLAMORGAN ARCHIVIST 1. PURPOSE OF REPORT This report describes the work of Glamorgan Archives (GA) for the period 1 December – 29 February. 2. BACKGROUND As part of the agreed reporting process the Glamorgan Archivist updates the Joint Committee quarterly on the work and achievements of the service. Members are asked to note the content of this report. 3. ISSUES A. MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES 1. Staff Maintain establishment This is the first full quarter with the reduced Access Team. Matthew Coleman’s hours have been extended to help fill the gap while establishment staff are also stepping in until a more stable solution is finalised. With a smaller Management Team and a professional team temporarily reduced by maternity leave it has made sense to combine meetings into a Management Circle. Continue skill sharing programme During the quarter 46 volunteers and work experience placements contributed 1283 hours to the work of the Office. Of these, 28 came from Cardiff, 9 from the Vale of Glamorgan, 6 from Bridgend, 2 from Rhondda Cynon Taf, and 1 from Caerphilly. Tours were provided 7 prospective volunteers and references for work supplied for 2 former volunteers. Students on work experience placements have given positive feedback. Work continues on a range of volunteer projects as outlined in the previous quarter. Volunteers have also started looking at Women’s Institute scrapbooks in more detail. -

CONFERENCE VENUE Swansea University Wallace Building The Wallace Building, Swansea University The conference venue for the UKIRSC 2019 is the Wallace Building on Singleton Campus, Swansea University, SA2 8PP. The Wallace Building is home to the Bioscience and Geography departments and is named after the “father of biogeography”, Alfred Russel Wallace, Welsh evolutionary biologist best known for having independently conceived the theory of evolution through natural selection, alongside Charles Darwin. Swansea University is situated in Singleton Park, a mature parkland and botanical gardens overlooking Swansea Bay beach. The Wallace Building is in the South West corner of Singleton Campus. It is approximately 15 minutes’ walk from the Uplands or Brynmill areas, 40 minutes’ walk from Swansea City Centre and 3 minutes from the beach (see map on page 5). 1 Registration will be held in the entrance foyer of the Wallace building. From there you can head directly upstairs to the Science Central for refreshments. Scientific posters will be displayed here. All guest lectures and student talks will take place in the Wallace Lecture Theatre, directly ahead on entering the Wallace Building and located down a short flight of stairs. Tea and coffee will be provided on arrival and during breaks, but please bring your own re-usable cup. Lunch is not provided. There are plenty of options for lunch on campus and in the Uplands and Brynmill area just short walk away. The Wallace Building Foyer. CAST BIOS TOM RILEY (Leonardo da Vinci) Tom has been seen in a variety of TV roles, recently portraying Dr. Laurence Shepherd opposite James Nesbitt and Sarah Parish in ITV1’s critically acclaimed six-part medical drama series “Monroe.” Tom has completed filming the highly anticipated second season which premiered autumn 2012. In 2010, Tom played the role of Gavin Sorensen in the ITV thriller “Bouquet of Barbed Wire,” and was also cast in the role of Mr. Wickham in the ITV four-part series “Lost in Austen,” alongside Hugh Bonneville and Gemma Arterton. Other television appearances include his roles in Agatha Christie’s “Poirot: Appointment with Death” as Raymond Boynton, as Philip Horton in “Inspector Lewis: And the Moonbeams Kiss the Sea” and as Dr. James Walton in an episode of the BBC series “Casualty 1906,” a role that he later reprised in “Casualty 1907.” Among his film credits, Tom played the leading roles of Freddie Butler in the Irish film Happy Ever Afters, and the role of Joe Clarke in Stephen Surjik’s British Comedy, I Want Candy. Tom has also been seen as Romeo in St Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold alongside Colin Firth and Rupert Everett and as the lead role in Santiago Amigorena’s A Few Days in September. Tom’s significant theater experiences originate from numerous productions at the Royal Court Theatre, including “Paradise Regained,” “The Vertical Hour,” “Posh,” “Censorship,” “Victory,” “The Entertainer” and “The Woman Before.” Tom has also appeared on stage in the Donmar Warehouse theatre’s production of “A House Not Meant to Stand” and in the Riverside Studios’ 2010 production of “Hurts Given and Received” by Howard Barker, for which Tom received outstanding reviews and a nomination for best performance in the new Off West End Theatre Awards.
