Laughter Express / Answers May–June 2021 F Swaminarayan Bal Prakash F 3 My Maharaj Thieves in a Fix There was a garden at a short distance from Ghanshyam’s house that was owned by Dharmadev. Once, Ghanshyam and Rampratapbhai decided to grow a jack tree for its jack fruit. Time passed and one night two thieves came and, cutting a hole in the wall, entered the garden. Silently they walked up to the jack fruit tree, which was now fully grown, and climbed it. They thought, “The fruits are all ripe. Let us pick them. We shall carry them in bags and earn a lot of money by selling them.” But, what’s this?? As soon as they touched the first jack fruit both their hands got stuck to the fruit. They tried very hard, but could not free their hands. While they were struggling, day dawned and soon it was morning. Dharmadev, carrying a water pot in hand, came to the garden for brushing his teeth. The two thieves saw him and quickly repented their wrong doing. In the distance, Rampratapbhai and Ghanshyam were coming towards them. The thieves were panic-stricken. When Rampratapbhai saw the thieves on the tree, he wanted to beat them with a stick but Ghanshyam stopped him. He went near the jack fruit tree along with his father. The growth, strength and inter- supportiveness of these four pillars are key to spreading of the Swaminarayan Faith. Lord Shree Swaminarayan has acknowledged these pillars and laid down the key responsibilities for each of the pillars. He instructed his Nand-Santos to write Shastras which helped the devotees to perform devotion (Bhakti), acquire true knowledge (Gnan), practice righteous living (Dharma) and develop non- attachment to every thing material except Supreme God, Lord Shree Swaminarayan (Vairagya). There are nine types of bhakti, of which, Lord Shree Swaminarayan has singled out Kirtan Bhakti as one of the most important and fundamental in our devotion to God.

These numbers are expected to increase to 600 million by 2031. The Census 2011 also showed that in 4,041 statutory towns, close to eight million households do not have access to toilets and defecate in the open (7.90 million). Unsafe sanitation has significant health costs and untreated sewage from cities is the single biggest source of water resource pollution in India. This indicates both the scale of the challenge ahead of the Indian cities and the huge costs incurred from not addressing them. Hence the Govt. of India launched the SBM in October 2014 to achieve the following objectives: 1. Elimination of open defecation 2.

No one can hope that living an indulgent, indisciplined and wanton life will not affect his or her state of mind. Gunatitanand Swami has stated that a person who overwhelms himself with worldly pleasures ‘bruises’ his soul. In other words the person cannot incline himself to practice morality and spirituality, which thus excludes him from the experience of lasting inner peace and joy. • Pragna 3 Essays
Pragna 3 Essays Essay 1 Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s Practice of His Teachings Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s personal experience of the knowledge that he imparted in Vachanamrut and his method of imparting spiritual knowledge is unique. Therefore, he could make statements as final judgements instantly, without doubts and hesitation, with supreme confidence. In the Gujarati Vachanamrut, the proper convention for emphasis that Maharaj uses is ‘JA’ at the end of such statements, meaning, “This is indeed the truth, a fact.” Hence, one may also state that he was the manifest form of knowledge. Space limits us to consider only a few examples here. In Gadhada I 7, Shriji Maharaj says that in the shastras whenever one encounters philosophical principles, one does not understand them and becomes confused. Hence, I will explain upon them as they are. In Panchala 2, he expounds upon the Yoga and Sankhya shastras, clearly citing their viability and limitations. Then, he says, “In this manner, we have described the eternal principles of the Sankhya shastras and the Yoga shastras having thoroughly pondered over them.” In Gadhada I 64, he discusses the concept of sharir-shariri. In conclusion, he says, “We have delivered this discourse having experienced it directly. Therefore, there is not a trace of doubt about it.” DHARMA In Gadhada II 35, he refutes the idiom, ‘Man hoi changa to kathrotma Ganga,’ which means that if the mind is pure then a vessel of [plain] water is as good as [sacred] Ganga water. Then he elaborates on the dharma of male and female devotees. He then confidently states, ‘Regardless of how much a person may have mastered samadhi..
