Hello! Welcome to St. Maria Goretti on this the Third Sunday of our Easter Season! The Lord is truly risen, Alleluia! Alleluia! These are awesome days. It is time for true Faith, constant Hope, and unconditional Love! We do welcome all of our guests and visitors who join us this weekend for Masses. In particular we welcome family and friends who are in town for First Holy Communion, which was celebrated here at St. Maria Goretti yesterday afternoon. We do pray for all of our First Communicants this weekend and we ask God to give them always a great love for the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ. We congratulate these children and their families on this happy occasion! We also welcome our brothers and sisters who join us this weekend who are in town for sport’s events at Grand Park. On Friday, May 17th, St. Maria Goretti will send a group of eleven Parishioners on our first-ever International Mission Trip to Guatemala. Months of hard work and preparation are coming together to make this happen. The 10- Day trip will include some construction work for a Catholic parish and school in central Guatemala, some medical services offered at a special clinic at the parish, and some educational and catechetical help offered to the community. This is the same parish and its school that our Catholic School is linked with, so Mr. Barnes and four of our students were just there last month. And last fall, four of their students were here at St. Maria Goretti for several weeks as part of an exchange program. This Guatemalan parish and school needs us. They have very meager resources and are working hard to build the Kingdom of God, just like we are here! We are hoping for a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Fr. Julio and the Parroquia de Santa Apolonia in Chimaltenango. And this is just the beginning! I ask all of us to pray for this effort and for our sister parish in Guatemala! Let us pray for those who are traveling to Guatemala in OUR name. And let us pray that this relationship with help all of us, both here in Westfield, and in Chimaltenango, to grow in our Faith, our Hope, and our Love! This weekend we will have a second collection to support this first-ever Mission effort. These funds go directly to buy the supplies and the materials that our team will need to build and repair what we have taken on at St. Apolonia, and medicines for the special Clinic that we will run. It is important to know that those eleven individuals who are going to work in Guatemala, representing all of us and giving up their own time, are all paying their own way. The funds we are collecting today will go directly to our sister parish and their needs. Today, at our 10 AM Mass we will be asking God’s blessings on the entire team who will make up this first effort. In addition, after Mass today, check out the International Mission table set up in our church narthex, where you can buy or donate specific items needed for this year’s trip. This trip is a big deal. We’ve helped parishes and communities in Appalachia and elsewhere in our own country before this. And that has been a beautiful experience for us. We will continue to do all that we can, to help as many as we can. But the poverty and need in countries like Haiti, and Guatemala, and Peru, are most extreme, and different from the poverty in our country. We need to be smart. We need to be frugal. And we need to do as much as we can with our people and our resources during this special opportunity! Stop by the Mission Trip table after Mass and get some more information! This weekend we are also having our first call-out for the 2019 St. Maria Goretti Italian Festival, happening on July 13th right here on our campus. Hundreds of volunteers are needed for this special celebration of the Feast of our Patroness! Mark your calendars now to attend and volunteer to help out at this year’s event. We need you!     St. Rose Venerini Feast: May 7 Facts Feast Day: May 7 Blessed Rose was born at Viterbo in 1656, the daughter of Godfrey Venerini, a physician. Upon the death of a young man who had been paying court to her, she entered a convent, but after a few months had to return home to look after her widowed mother. Rose use to gather the women and girls of the neighborhood to say the rosary together in the evenings, and when she found how ignorant many of them were of their religion, she began to instruct them. She was directed by Father Ignatius Martinelli, a Jesuit, who convinced her that her vocation was as a teacher "in the world" rather than as a contemplative in a convent; whereupon in 1685, with two helpers, Rose opened a preschool for girls in Viterbo: it soon became a success. Blessed Rose had the gift of ready and persuasive speech, and a real ability to teach and to teach others to teach, and was not daunted by any difficulty when the service of God was in question. Her reputation spread, and in 1692, she was invited by Cardinal Barbarigo to advise and help in the training of teachers and organizing of schools in his diocese of Montefiascone. Here she was the mentor and friend of Lucy Filippini, who became foundress of an institute of maestre pie and was canonized in 1930. Rose organized a number of schools in various places, sometimes in the face of opposition that resorted to force in unbelievable fashion - the teachers were shot at with bows and their house fired.

Their names will be remembered for ever. In contrast to this immediately comes the thought of the "rich young man" of whom the Gospel, just proclaimed, speaks. This youth has remained anonymous; if he had responded positively to the invitation of Jesus, he would have become his disciple and probably the Evangelist would have recorded his name. From this fact one can immediately glimpse the theme of this Sunday's Liturgy of the Word: if man puts his trust in the riches of this world, he will not reach the full sense of life and of true joy. If instead, trusting the Word of God, he renounces himself and his goods for the Kingdom of Heaven, apparently losing much, he in reality gains all. The Saint is exactly that man, that woman, who, responding with joy and generosity to Christ's 2 call, leaves everything to follow him. Like Peter and the other Apostles, as St Teresa of Jesus today reminds us as well as countless other friends of God, the new Saints have also run this demanding yet fulfilling Gospel itinerary and have already received "a hundred fold" in this life, together with trials and persecutions, and then eternal life.

    The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension Introduction History of Martyrologies The Martyrology is an official liturgical book of the Catholic Church. The official Latin version of the Martyrology contains a short liturgical service the daily reading of the Martyrology’s list of saints for each day. The oldest surviving martyologies are the lists of martyrs and bishops from the fourth-century Roman Church. The martyrology wrongly attributed to St. Jerome was written in Ital in the second half of the fifth century, but all the surviving versions of it come from Gaul. It is a simple martyrology, which lists the name of the saint and the date and place of death of the saint. Historical martyrologies give a brief history of the saints. In the eighth and ninth centuries, St. Bede, Rhabanus Maurus, and Usuard all wrote historical martyrologies. The Roman Martyrology, based primarily on Usuard’s, was first published in 1583, and the edition of 1584 was made normative in the Roman rite by Gregory XIII. The post-Vatican II revision appeared first in 2001. A revision that corrected typographical errors and added 117 people canonized by Pope John Paul II between 2001 and 2004, appeared in 2005.1 The Purpose and Principles of This Martyology The primary purpose of this martyrology is to provide an historically accurate text for liturgical use at the monastery, where each day after noon prayer it is customary to read the martyrology for the following day. Some things in this martyrology are specific to the Monastery of the Ascension: namesdays of the members of the community, anniversaries of members of the community who have died, a few references to specific events or saints of local interest.
