Transport and Communications Bulletin for Asia and the Pacific No.70, 2001 ASSESSING THE TRANSPORTATION PROBLEMS OF THE SUGAR CANE INDUSTRY IN THAILAND Paitoon Chetthamrongchai,* Aroon Auansakul** and Decha Supawan*** ABSTRACT Transportation has a fundamental role in the economic development of all countries. It is not just a means to service commuting people, but also to collect products and materials from producers and distribute them to consumers. Transportation has become a significant factor affecting the production costs of commodities. The production of sugar cane in Thailand is no exception. The cost of transporting sugar cane from the farm gate to the mills is quite high, owing to the multiple transport facilities and time-consuming activities involved in the delivery process. The total transportation expenditure was estimated at 5,708 million baht for the crop year 1999- 2000. The average cost per transaction incurred by farmers (excluding other labour costs) was in the range of 180-220 baht per ton in 1999. A large portion of this cost comprises truck rental and driver wages. These two elements together represent a high proportion of the overall production cost. The transportation issue has been overlooked in many industrial sectors and in the agricultural sector, in particular. The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a study on the transportation and other relevant costs of sugar cane production. The findings and the subsequent recommendations could be considered for the enhancement of welfare of the sugar cane farmers and the increased efficiency of the industry in general and may also be applied to other agro- based industries facing similar problems. -

Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Food Enzymes to Enable the Use of Lysophospholipase from Trichoderma reesei RF7206 in the Production of Sugars and Dextrins from Starch Notice of Modification – Lists of Permitted Food Additives Reference Number: NOM/ADM-0172 August 10, 2021 Summary Food additives are regulated in Canada under Marketing Authorizations (MAs) issued by the Minister of Health and the Food and Drug Regulations (Regulations). Approved food additives and their permitted conditions of use are set out in the Lists of Permitted Food Additives that are incorporated by reference in the MAs and published on the Canada.ca website. A petitioner can request that Health Canada approve a new additive or a new condition of use for an already approved food additive by filing a food additive submission with the Department's Food Directorate. Health Canada uses this premarket approval process to determine whether the scientific data support the safety of food additives when used under specified conditions in foods sold in Canada. Health Canada’s Food Directorate received a food additive submission seeking approval for the use of lysophospholipase from Trichoderma reesei RF7206 in starch used in the production of dextrins, dextrose, fructose syrups and solids, glucose (glucose syrup), glucose solids (dried glucose syrup), or maltose. The food enzyme is intended to be used at a level consistent with Good Manufacturing Practice1. Its purpose of use is to improve the efficiency of the starch processing. Lysophospholipase is a type of phospholipase. Phospholipase from other microbial sources is already permitted for use in Canada as a food enzyme in certain foods, but not in the production of sugars and dextrins from starch. -

To investigate the migration and release behavior of the monomers from melamine-based food contact materials into food simulants and food stuffs, cooking spoons were tested under so-called hot plate conditions at 100 ◦C. Release conditions using the real hot plate conditions with 3% acetic acid were compared with conditions in a conventional migration oven and with a release to deionized water. Furthermore, the kinetics of the release were studied using Arrhenius plots giving an activation energy for the release of melamine of 120 kJ/mol. Finally, a correlation between quality of the resins, specifically the kind of bridges between the monomers, and the release of melamine, was confirmed by CP/MAS 13C-NMR measurements of the melamine kitchenware. Obviously, the ratio of methylene bridges and dimethylene ether bridges connecting the melamine monomers during the curing process can be directly correlated with the amount of the monomers released into food. -
