The Boston Red Sox Sunday, August 13, 2017 * The Boston Globe Andrew Benintendi, Red Sox bury Yankees Peter Abraham NEW YORK — Andrew Benintendi was left out of the Red Sox lineup on July 31 and again the next day. Manager John Farrell, always careful with his choice of words, said the rookie needed time to clear his head. Labels aside, Brock Holt was a better choice to play left field at that point. Benintendi had hit .180 with little power since the All-Star break, his at-bats a steady drip of weak contact. Holt got on base five times in two games, both victories against the Cleveland Indians. But he didn’t expect to stay in left field. “I knew Benny would be back there,” Holt said. “You’re slumping, slumping, slumping and that time off allows you not to worry about at-bats. The guy is a great hitter, we know that.” When Benintendi was released from the dugout, he doubled in his first at-bat and hasn’t stopped hitting since. Benintendi belted a pair of three-run home runs on Saturday, carrying the Red Sox to a 10-5 victory against the Yankees before a sellout crowd of 47,241 at the Stadium. After a discouraging late-inning loss on Friday night, the Sox battered Yankees ace Luis Severino. Now the Sox will send Chris Sale to the mound against rookie Jordan Montgomery on Sunday night with a chance to win the series. The Sox have won nine of 10 games and again lead the American League East by 4½ games.

Atlanta Braves Clippings Friday, April 29, 2016 Braves.com Mallex, Markakis lead Braves to snap skid By Ian Browne and Maureen Mullen / MLB.com | 1:29 AM ET BOSTON -- The Braves put together a steady offense against Clay Buchholz and salvaged the finale of a four-game series with the Red Sox by pulling out a 5-3 victory at Fenway Park on Thursday night. The win snapped an eight-game losing skid for Atlanta. "We did a lot of good stuff on the whole game -- pitching-wise, offensively," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "It's a good baseball game. It really is a good baseball game." After Boston scored one in the first, the Braves rallied for three in the second and led for the rest of the night. Nick Markakis had four hits and three RBIs from the leadoff spot. Freddie Freeman and No. 9 hitter Mallex Smith added three hits each, with Smith driving in two runs. Jhoulys Chacin did enough to get the win, going five-plus innings, allowing six hits and two runs. Buchholz took the loss, giving up eight hits and five runs over 6 1/3 innings. "They are a tough lineup, so I was trying to keep the ball down, trying to make pitches," Chacin said. "Just want to keep going, keep giving my team the most that I can. Just trying to maybe go a little bit longer in games." Buchholz has given up five earned runs in four of his five starts. "I wouldn't ever go on a bad streak if I knew what I had to do not to go on them," Buchholz said.

Department of Economics Working Paper Series Minority Status and Managerial Survival in Major League Base- ball Brian Volz University of Connecticut Working Paper 2008-36 September 2008 341 Mansfield Road, Unit 1063 Storrs, CT 06269–1063 Phone: (860) 486–3022 Fax: (860) 486–4463 http://www.econ.uconn.edu/ This working paper is indexed on RePEc, http://repec.org/ Abstract The effect of minority status on managerial survival in Major League Baseball is analyzed using survival time analysis and data envelopment analysis. Efficiency scores based on team performance and player salary data from 1985 to 2006 are computed and included as covariates in a survival time analysis. It is shown that when controlling for performance and personal characteristics minorities are on average 9.6 percentage points more likely to return the following season. Addi- tionally, it is shown that winning percentage has no impact on managerial survival when efficiency is controlled for. Journal of Economic Literature Classification: J71, L83, C41 Keywords: Baseball, Management, Race, Survival, DEA Introduction Due to the obsessively accurate and detailed record keeping of Major League Baseball and the popularity of the sport, there exists a large amount of literature on almost all aspects of the sport, including discrimination and managerial retention. However, previous research has failed to link the two subjects by including race as a factor when examining managerial retention in professional sports. The analysis presented in this paper looks to fill this gap in the literature by providing a thorough analysis of the effects of minority status on managerial survival in Major League Baseball.

FLORIDA MARLINS, LP CLIPS Friday, April 01, 2011 Fresh Opening Day faces for Mets, Marlins Alden Gonzalez / MLB.com MIAMI -- This is when we'll finally begin to see how much change has really paid off. After several years of playoff absences, the respective front offices of the Mets and Marlins felt a switch at manager was necessary last year. Terry Collins of the Mets and Edwin Rodriguez of the Marlins will begin their respective quests to transform a culture and build success when they face each another on Friday, when Sun Life Stadium hosts its final Opening Day at 7:10 p.m. ET. The matchup between the two National League East rivals will feature the Mets' Mike Pelfrey and the Marlins' Josh Johnson, and it will signal the start of the final season before Florida moves into its highly anticipated retractable-roof stadium in 2012. For Rodriguez, who took the job when Fredi Gonzalez -- now with the Braves -- was dismissed on June 23, this will be his first Opening Day as a big league manager. For Collins, who last managed the Angels in 1999, it's his first in a long time. "This is the ultimate position to be in," Collins said, "and it's great to be back." The Mets -- apparently fed up with missing out on the playoffs for four straight years -- opted to start fresh this offseason, replacing general manager Omar Minaya with Sandy Alderson and Jerry Manuel with Collins. Then, toward the end of Spring Training, they cut ties with mercurial pitcher Oliver Perez and second baseman Luis Castillo -- two players symbolic of the Mets' recent underachievement.
